with further additions and corrections for the eighth and ninth editions

For many years all that was known of the early competition was that since 1936 cricket matches have been played between the Victorian and South Australian cricket umpires associations. Three matches were known to have been played in the 1930s, but competition was suspended during World War II. In 2010, however, Kristen Thomas from South Australia undertook further research; I am indebted to her for the following additional early history:

Until recently, accessible records indicated that 1936 was the inaugural year of competition. But modern technology has enabled research into historic newspapers that reveals plans for the interstate fixture were underway as early as 1930, and the actual first match was held in Carlton, Victoria in 1931 … As it turned out, the result of the first match was a diplomatically correct ‘ draw’. As it was not a limited overs game—and it appears that SA declared at 8 for 125—when Victoria reached 7 for 111 at stumps, the game was declared a draw.

The above is taken from the pamphlet produced by Kristen in 2013, titled: “SA vs Victoria (including the Bob Crockett Memorial Shield) 2013 – History of the Competition: 1931 and counting”.

The competition was resumed in 1947, playing for the R.M. (Bob) Crockett Shield; matches have been held every second year since then. Easter exchanges are much more than simply a cricket match, however. Members of both associations and their families get together to make and renew friendships; on each occasion there are numerous social events arranged. In 2001 The Keith C Butler Trophy, was created for the family competition that takes place on the Sunday of each exchange visit.

The Victorian association was known as the Victorian Cricket Association Umpires’ Association until 1998 when it voted to expand its membership and role to include VCA official club scorers, and changed its name to the Victorian Cricket Association Umpires & Scorers’ Association (VCAUSA). In this edition of these records it is referred to by the initials VCAUA up to 1997 and VCAUSA from 1999 onwards.

The South Australian association was named the South Australian Cricket Umpires’ Association (SACUA), maintaining this name even after scorers were admitted to membership in 2001. In 2010 it changed its name to properly reflect its membership, becoming the South Australian Cricket Umpires & Scorers Association (SACUSA). In this edition of these records it is referred to by the initials SACUA up to 2009 and SACUSA from 2011 onwards.

Both Associations are referred to by their current initials (SACUSA and VCAUSA) in column headings, but the historical initials are used in reference to specific matches prior to the changes of name.

I took over responsibility for maintaining the Crockett Shield Records from Darrell Holt (VCAUSA) in 1995. He had initially compiled them from available records, and both associations owe him a considerable debt of gratitude for this contribution to their combined histories and the long and proud traditions of this enduring contest. Darrell’s initial records were incomplete due to the following circumstances:

• Scoresheets for the three pre-war matches were not available.

• Scoresheets for the first three post-war matches were not available, although undated newspaper cuttings included in the VCAUSA scorebook on pages labelled 47 and 49 appeared to give some details of the 1947 and 1949 matches.

From 1953, both Associations have copies of the original scoresheets. The details in this document have been collated from the available information.

In January 2017, Kristen Thomas discovered a discrepancy between these records and new information she had available, concerning the 1951 match; this record stated simply “VCAUA won”, whereas her two sources stated that South Australia had won this match. A check of the engraving on the Shield itself added a third piece of evidence, and so the error was corrected. Then Kristen spotted a second discrepancy—the engraving on the Shield indicated that Victoria had won the 1949 match, but these records suggested the match had been won by SA. This sent me off to try to find out more about the two undated newpaper cuttings referred to earlier, as these purported to be the basis for the detail given about the two matches concerned. A search of Trove (a digitised newspaper resource at the National Library: trove.nla.gov.au) very quickly brought to light the truth of the so-called 49 article: it is from The Mail, 11 April 1936 and so has nothing to do with the 1949 match at all. The cutting on the 47 page concerned a visit to Healesville following the match—so the match it referred to was clearly played in Melbourne—but since the other article had been proven wrongly tagged in the scorebook the date of the Healesville article was also in question. Subsequent examination of its content and other material she had in hand soon led Kristen to the conclusion that the Healesville article concerned the 1937 match:

I have some thoughts regarding the newspaper clipping that mentions a trip to Healesville. I believe that it refers to the 1937 match … George Carr (who is mentioned in the article) was involved with the 1936 match so we can see that the era is correct. George passed away in 1943, so we know that he couldn’t have been involved in any post WW2 matches. The 1939 match was held in SA, so that eliminates the newspaper report in question being from that year. Also, our records indicate that K Butler (mentioned in the article) was still playing cricket during the 1935/36 season, and he didn’t start umpiring until the 1936/37 season. It wouldn’t be surprising that Keith C Butler started playing for the umpires right from his very first season as he was one of our staunchest supporters and is in our Hall of Fame. And, of course, we play for his trophy on the Sunday of our Easter competition.

My search of Trove also uncovered a hitherto unknown article concerning the 1939 match and so we can to some extent rewrite the early history of the competition, as follows:

1. The newspaper cutting previously thought to be a match report of the 1949 match is in fact of the 1936 match.

2. We can be fairly confident, based on the evidence Kristen presents, that the Healesville article concerns the 1937 match.

3. From the Trove news report we now know a little about the 1939 match.4. Based on the above and other reliable information, we now have some information concerning

each of the pre-war matches: 1931 (drawn), 1936, 1939, and probably 1937 (all won by SA).5. The only information we now have concerning the matches in 1947, 1949 and 1951 is the

engraving on the Shield itself, which shows that the winners were: 1947 SA; 1949 Vic; 1951 SA.

For the eighth edition a new table was added—Best winning streaks—and a number of minor corrections were made.

In May 2019 SA scorer Neil Ricketts drew to our attention the fact that Victorian bowler Stephen Brne had taken a hat trick in the 2015 match which appeared to have been overlooked, perhaps due to its spanning two overs. This set me on a search of the available scorebooks to see if there had been

any earlier unrecorded hat tricks. I found two others, in 1957 and 1967. In this ninth edition I have therefore included a new table to record brief details of each. There was in fact a brief but inaccurate reference to the 1967 hat trick in the Highlights of Matches section (p28); this has been corrected. Various other minor errors were discovered in this process and these have also been fixed; some small additions have also been made, e.g. marking the best partnership for either side for each wicket.

Either Association would appreciate receiving any details which may complete missing information. In addition, suggestions for improvements to these records are always welcome.

The Pre-War Matches

The three newspaper cuttings above are those discussed in the Introduction. The two articles at left were pasted into an old scorebook on pages labelled 49 and 47 but were otherwise unidentified, and hitherto were assumed to refer to those two matches. Recent research has established that the article at left was written in 1936, and that the Healesville article was probably written in 1937. The 1939 article was discovered in the process of researching the other two. Combined, they give us detail we never previously had of these three pre-war matches.

It is worth noting here one individual performance these articles reveal. In 1936 SA bowler Wigglesworth had figures of 0/11; in 1937 C. Wrigglesworth took 6/10; in 1939 E. Wigglesworth took 7/5. Although there are minor variations in the reported name, there is good reason to believe these all refer to Claude Ernest Bell Wigglesworth, who definitely played in the 1936 match. If he played in all three he had the remarkable career figures, unlikely ever to be surpassed, of 13/26!

The Ian McGregor Medal

Following the 2003 Easter Visit, at which time Ian McGregor was known to be terminally ill (he died in August 2003), the committees of the two associations decided to strike a medal for the player of the match to be called the Ian McGregor Medal. Ian was an enthusiastic participant and key organiser of Easter events from 1989 to 2001. A small group of VCAUSA representatives was privileged to visit Ian and his family before he died, to present them with a framed copy of the medal.

Highlights of Matches

1930sAs noted in the Introduction, research in 2010 by Kristen Thomas of South Australia has unearthed the fact that the first match played between the two association was at Carlton (Vic) in 1931, and that: “As it was not a limited overs game—and it appears that SA declared at 8 for 125—when Victoria reached 7 for 111 at stumps, the game was declared a draw.”

An account of the 1936 match (from newspaper report reproduced on p3) read:

Victoria lost their first nine wickets for 53 runs, but a fighting last-wicket partnership took their total to 101. The South Australians replied with 120 runs … D. Elder, a former international umpire, who officiated for 35 years, was carried off the field shoulder high, as a result of his effort in Victoria’s last-wicket stand.

(Elder had umpired 14 Test matches between 1910–11 and 1928–29, and the VCAUSA 2nd XI umpiring medal is named in his honour.)

The report we now believe refers to the 1937 match (see p3) indicates it was played at Wattle Park in Melbourne, SA scoring 191 to defeat Victoria (135) by 56 runs. Trophies were won by E. Ramsden (Vic) and Keith Butler (SA) who made 67 and 66 respectively; “C. Wrigglesworth (SA) took 6 wickets for 10 runs”; and “SA Manager, (Mr Geo. Carr) said that the trip was such a happy one that he hoped that an interchange of visits would take place every two years”.

This wish was fulfilled in 1939 when the first biennial return visit took place. The newspaper report of the match (see p3) states that: “C.W. Walker, South Australian international and R.M. Hammence, West Torrens and State batsman, were umpires”. For the second match in succession SACUA made 191 (12 players batted), which was more than enough to overtake VCAUA’s 149 (13 players batted). Victoria’s E. Ramsden followed his 67 in 1937 with the same score again, while SA’s “E. Wigglesworth” returned the extraordinary bowling figures of 7/5, still the best bowling figures ever.

1940sThe biennial visits were obviously suspended during the war years, but resumed in 1947 with a match played in Melbourne, SACUA winning their fourth match in a row. This match saw the inauguration of the R.M. (Bob) Crockett Shield as the permanent trophy for this competition. Victoria had its first win in the competition in 1949 in Adelaide. No details are know of either match other than the winner’s names engraved on the Shield itself.

1950sThe 1950s saw the emergence of several legendary all-rounders—Fred Godson, Jack Kierse, (SA) and Merv Barker (Vic) who all dominated the series for many years:

• Jack Kierse top scored for SA twice with 68 and 69 and captured many wickets, including figures of 5/33, 4/41 (including the first hat trick in the series), 4/22, and 3/30.

• Fred Godson was a star performer from 1957 until 1975, recording scores of 28, 26, 20 (retired), 24, 25, 20 and 38 not out, and had bowling figures of 4/12, 3/27 and 3/29.

• Merv Barker, (1959–1973), was Victoria’s most consistent all-rounder during the 1960s, scoring 32 not out, top scoring twice with 25 and 35, and recording bowling figures of 6/44, 4/40 and 3/43.

Little is known about the 1951 match other than the fact that SA won and SA players D. Cocks (batting) and K. Smith (bowling) were awarded trophies.

SA won the 1953 match comfortably, Jack Kierse starring with both bat and ball. However, they just scraped home in 1955 by 1 wicket—Victoria were defending 134 and had SA 9/127, but 8 off the final over by the last two SA batsmen saw them home.

The 1957 match was dominated by SA’s Jack Kierse (4/41) included the first hat trick and Fred Godson (4/12) who then combined for a record first wicket partnership of 98, a record which still stands. Kierse’s 4/41 in 1957 included the first hat trick in the series and brought the Victorian innings to a swift end. This win meant that SACUA had for the second time won four matches in a row.

Victoria’s second win in 1959 was achieved after scoring only 78—the lowest winning score by either side! SA was strongly placed at 3/45, but lost 7/14 to opening bowlers Merv Barker and Lyons Taylor to lose by 19 runs.

1960sThe 1960s were highlighted by away side victories—between 1961 and 1971, the home side lost all six matches. Except for 1965, all games were won by big margins.

1961 saw SA dismissed for only 69 with Merv Barker and Johnnie Wheeler bowling unchanged for Victoria. Victoria passed SA’s 69 with 3 wickets down, giving them a second successive win.

In 1963, Ray Isherwood (43) top scored for Victoria in his first match; Ray was a fierce competitor, (adjudged out Obstructing the Field in 1977). Ray missed only one game between 1963 and his last match in 1985. Victoria collapsed from 2/65 to all out for 99. The match was dominated by J. Novak who followed 3 wickets by top scoring with 51 not out.

In 1965 SA’s 9/91cc (28 overs) was overtaken by Victoria’s 9/93, SA bowling 32 overs in the allotted time! The modern “limited overs” match rules have since replaced time as the match limitation. Chasing only 91, Victoria at 1/44 lost 6/17, but recovered to 9/89, before the last pair, J. Mastin and J. Wheeler scored the winning runs.

Ken Collicoat top scored in both Victoria’s wins of 1961 and 1965.

In the 1967 match two outstanding indiidual feats were recorded—

• Jack Novak produced the second 7-wicket haul in the series with 7/22, which also included the second hat trick recorded. Novak dismissed P. Hooper, K. Millard and V. Smithwick in his third over. At completion of his fifth over, Novak had taken 6 wickets for only 5 runs! SA bowled Victoria out for only 70 (including 4 ducks), on a “soft wicket”.

• When SA batted, they lost 2/0, but then Max O’Connell hit the first century (117) in the series. Max hit his century in 137 minutes and dominated the innings to the extent the other 10 batsmen contributed only 30 runs!

The 1967 match saw SA commence a run of four successive big scores (159, 168, 8/179 and 9/153). By contrast, Victoria’s batting failed between 1967 and 1973 with mainly low totals of 70, 2/179, 55 and 58.

In 1969, SA’s C. Dowling and W. Lane hit a ninth wicket partnership of 50 runs, but Victoria replied by recording their best partnerships for both the first wicket (54), and the second wicket (56); Kevin Carmody, scoring 75 not out, was involved in both records.

1970sVictoria’s batting failed in both 1971 (55) and 1973 (58).

In 1971, SA (8/179) replied strongly with L. Davoren scoring 63 to personally outscore Victoria’s total of 55—it’s lowest ever. 1971 was the last occasion the side batting second continued to bat after passing the opposite team’s score.

The 1973 match saw Victoria’s Peter Hooper capture 3/38 to follow his 3/1 (1971) and 5/29 (1965). Hooper, with 13 runs, also top scored in 1973 as SA cruised to an easy 95 run win, M. Ziersch taking 4 wickets for only 5 runs. Batting first, the SA openers, Robin Bailhache and Bill Penley, scored 67, which exceeded Victoria’s subsequent total of only 58.

Victoria’s batting performance improved in 1975, with F. Semmens top scoring with 56 to enable a narrow win with only 2 wickets remaining.

SA’s comfortable victory in 1977 was dominated by Tony Crafter’s double of 5/21 and 63 not out. Crafter and Bill Penley (a very consistent run scorer) combined to hit the winning runs in an unfinished fifth wicket partnership of 69.

After 1977, SA lead the series 14 wins to 5. In 1979, SA (4 ducks) was dismissed for its lowest ever score of 51. This was overtaken by Victoria in less than 10 overs! 1979’s win heralded a resurgence in the Victorian performances with a stronger team developed during the 1980s.

1980sThe 1980s featured two excellent matches—Victoria won with 1 wicket left and 6 balls remaining in 1981, whilst SA won in 1989 with only 9 balls remaining.

Generally, high scores were a feature of the 1980s—SA scored 7/175 in 1981 and 8/163 in 1987 and lost both matches!

1981 ranks with the great matches. It featured two excellent all-rounder performances by SA’s Geoff Williams (51 runs and 4/49) and Victoria’s Ian Goss (3/51 and 37 not out). Goss’s batting saw Victoria win by 1 wicket.

Victoria won the 1983 match comfortably, passing SA’s 8/113 in the 33rd over.

SA was dismissed for 56 in 1985. Mike Gandy and Darrell Holt bowled unchanged to share the wickets. Gandy, a key bowler, having played First Class cricket with Tasmania, represented SA umpires in 1981 and 1983, but transferred to Victoria for the 1985 and 1987 matches.

In 1987, Victoria established a highest ever score of 8/217, with Len King (96) and Tony Bramwell (59) combining in the first century partnership (133) of the series, to rescue Victoria from a risky 4/44.

Victoria’s five successive wins (1979, 1981, 1983, 1985 and 1987) was its first winning streak; previously it had only won successive matches once (1959 and 1961). Graeme Bugge uniquely participated in all five of Victoria’s wins.

SA won an excellent match in 1989. Victoria (8/129) with insufficient runs on the board, held control until SA Captain Bruce Martin hit a match winning 24 not out. Ronnie Winchester (50) sheet-anchored Victoria’s batting, whilst SA’s Daryl Harper (22) continued his consistent batting efforts after top scoring with 34 and 22 in 1985 and 1987.

1990sIn 1991, Victoria was struggling at 5/43 but relied on Doug Funnell (58) and Captain Ian McGregor (24) to reach 9/150. SA replied slowly taking almost 30 overs to reach 5/50, but legspinner David Clement’s four wickets abruptly ended the match.

Clement also took 4 wickets in the 1993 match when SA was bowled out for 115. Victoria replied with an opening patnership of 40 as openers P. Dikschei 35 and A. Johanson 25 set up a comfortable win. A feature of this match was the censure at the post-match gathering that evening of Victorian batsman Brian Farrow for disputing the umpire’s decision following his dismissal!

1995 saw the match played at Xavier College, Melbourne for the first time. SA batted first, compiling a respectable 8/156 with six batsmen reaching double figures. Victoria was in trouble early crashing to 3/18 and then 5/59, before some resistance carried the score to 132, Steve Rudolph taking 4/30 from 8 overs.

Victoria did better in Adelaide in 1997. Batting first they made 152, Mark Sheehan top scoring with 42. SA was dismissed for 128 in reply, the wickets shared between Ian McGregor (5/26) and David Clement (4/22). Graham Slater’s 39 was the top score for SA.

An almost identical scoreline saw Victoria win again in 1999, back at Xavier College. Mark Sheehan again top scored (73no) in a total of 6/159. Graham Slater (68) also top scored for the second successive match in SA’s total of 133.

2000sWith matches tied at 15 all, Victoria had hopes of taking the lead for the first time in 2001, but it was not to be. Captain Chris Stevens led the way with 5/11 from 11 overs as SA was skittled for 109, but Victoria’s reply was a dismal 68, the last 8 wickets falling for 19 runs.

SA was similarly bowled out cheaply in 2003, W. Overmeyer top scoring with 42no in a total of only 103. This time Victoria comfortably achieved the victory target, levelling the series again, 16 all.

It was in 2005 that Victoria took the lead in the series for the first time. After SA was bowled out for 179, Andy Collins top scoring with 48, Victoria started slowly before a whirlwind century by Chris Dalkin (111no) carried Victoria to a memorable win. Dalkin’s century was only the second in the series and the first by a Victorian.

In 2007 the match was played at Cricket Willow, home of the Crockett Museum and former Crockett family property. A steady start by SA saw them 2 for 54 after 21 overs, before big hitting from Mike Sheppard and Graham Slater added 68 runs in rapid time (a record 3rd wicket partnership). Victoria fought back with the visitors losing 5 wickets for 30 runs to finish with 7 for 152 at the compulsory

closure after 45 overs. The Victorian run chase began in steady fashion with Chris Allan and Tony Ventura adding 66 off 19 overs, breaking a 38 year old record of 54 for the opening stand. The run rate accelerated with the arrival of Michael Leckie; together with captain Ash Barrow 78 runs were struck off 61 balls in 39 minutes to win the match in the 33rd over. This win gave Victoria its second notable winning streak of 3 matches. Victoria now led the series 18–16.

In beautiful autumn weather and on the picturesque Scotch College no 2 oval, SA had a comprehensive victory in 2009. Victoria batted first, but with only three batsmen reaching double figures they were bowled out in the 39th over for 173. SA overcame this total comfortably in 32 overs, Michael Sheppard hitting a 6 over extra cover to win the game. This innings featured a record partnership of 101 for the 2nd wicket, only the second century partnership, and the first by SA. Victoria’s lead in the series was back to 1: 18–17.

2010sApril 23 2011 saw the match played for the second time at Cricket Willow. With Easter almost as late as it can possibly be it was a cold morning and the grass was very wet following an overnight frost. This made the toss critical as the ball was bound to deteriorate quickly early in the match; this proved to be the case, and the umpires decided to change the ball after only 15 overs. Victoria’s batsmen performed much better than they had two years earlier; with two half centuries and two others scoring thirties the side was bowled out with two balls to spare for 234, the highest score ever by either side. Playing for the first time under their new name, SACUSA’s innings got off to a terrible start with two wickets falling in the 3rd over and another in the 5th; at the first drinks break they were 4/28 and never really looked likely to challenge the target score, although some late resistance had them at least batting the full 45 overs. Again Victoria led the series by 2: 19–17

After three April matches in succession the 2013 fixture snuck back into March—just, being played on the 30th. Overcast skies hung over the start of the match on the main oval at Scotch College, Adelaide. After being sent in by Victorian captain Alan McCarthy, the South Australians proceeded to hit up 9/191, equalling their highest score made in successive matches before the war—1937 and 1939. The Victorian side was unable to match that total, its innings ending well short at 8/138. The series margin was back to 1, Victoria leading 19–18.

The 2015 match was played on April 4, for the first time using the picturesque ground and facilities of the Wesley College Glen Waverley campus. A beautiful sunny day greeted the first match to be played in Melbourne since 2003, the two previous Victorian exchanges (2007 and 2011) having been based in Ballarat with the matches played at Cricket Willow. Winning the toss, Victoria batted first and proceeded to hit up their third highest innings total, 8/194 from their allocated 40 overs, the innings ending with a flouorish as Jamie Wyatt (20no) and Glenn Davey (18no) set a new 9th wicket partnership record for VCAUSA. Victoria had their hands well and truly on the Crockett Shield only 10 overs into the SACUSA innings, the visitors having collapsed to 8/24. Not to be outdone, however, David Little (33no) and Cain Kemp (30no) proceeded to break the 57-year-old 9th wicket partnership with an unbroken stand of 88—the best by 38 runs for either State—ensuring some respectability as the innings ended after 40 overs at 8/112. Stephen Brne (5/12) took the third hat trick—the first by a Victorian— which was largely unnoticed because it spanned his 4th and 5th overs. Victoria again led the series by 2: 20–18.

In 2017 the match was played at Henley High School on 15 April, and in many ways was a re-run of 2015—Victoria won the toss, batted first, hit their third highest score ever, then had SA struggling throughout their innings but at least managing to bat out their overs. Early in Victoria’s innings SA had the batting side in some trouble at 3/23 in the 11th over, but Daryl Brigham (74) and Stephen Brne (50) hit a record 4th wicket partnership for either State (84) to rescue the situation, before John Richards (33) guided the lower half through, dismissed on the last ball of the innings for 33. Victoria’s bowlers kept things tight throughout with none conceding more than 4 runs per over, and although they batted through their 40 overs SA were never in a position to challenge. The last four matches have followed the same pattern—a record or near record first innings setting up a comfortable win. Victoria now leads the series by 3: 21–18.

Another very late Easter in 2019 made it difficult for the hosts to find a suitable ground available, but eventually KM Reedy Reserve in the outer south eastern suburb of Hampton Park was selected—and it proved to be an excellent venue for a gloriously sunny Saturday April 20th. Both sides passed 150 and both innings were rescued from a collapse by a new partnership record. SA’s Craig Thomas (90) and A. Narwal (26) put on 72 for the 5th wicket, breaking a record that had stood since 1977. Victoria looked to be in trouble at 6/69 but an unbroken partnership of 88 for the 7th wicket broke a record that had stood since 1999 and saw the hosts home for their third win in succession. Victoria now leads the series by 4: 22–18.

The Keith C Butler Trophy

Following the 1999 Easter Visit a combined meeting of the committees of the two associations decided to commence a new competition between the two associations, to be known as the Keith C Butler Trophy. Keith Butler was a SACUSA member who attended every Easter event from 1936 to 1997.

Competition is in a sport or activity and a format which enables and encourages participation of all members and families. The actual contest is determined for each visit by the host association.
