GE Volunteer Teams Adopt the Sirhaul Village School in Gurgaon, India
Sirhaul is a small village located in the vicinity of the GE Money office servicing Gurgaon, India. The GE Volunteer team adopted the Sirhaul village school as part of a community development project.
GE Volunteers identified key needs and generated resources to support the creation of infrastructure. After discussions with school authorities, the volunteer team initiated multiple projects starting with a donation drive that drew 100 percent participation from the 250 employees at the site.
The first drive was to gather books and other articles to setup a student library and a recreation room. The library was later used to launch education initiatives and issue free curriculum books on a yearly basis to senior students who could not afford them. Approximately 350 students receive books each year, which improves retention of students in higher grades by 30 percent.
To address concerns of health and hygiene, the GE Water team helped volunteers install a reverse osmosis water plant with a capacity of 1,500 liters to provide safe drinking water to children and teachers.
GE Volunteers also planted about 100 tree saplings to enhance the green cover at the school. This will later be used to promote an Eco Club to increase environmental awareness among the children. There are other projects underway to develop permanent medical and sport facilities at the school to improve the infrastructure further.
