FROM THE DESK OF FATHER JEFF: Today is our Annual Midsummer Collection. Please be as generous as possible. This helps us through the winter. The recipient of this year’s St. Agnes medal is Frederick J. Weinfurt. Fred has chaired the Parish Council, been a member of the Finance Committee, is a Parish Trustee (as was his father), co-chaired the 100th Anniversary journal committee, been a member of the 100th Anniversary planning group, and run the $10,000 raffle. I am pleased that he has received this award. He certainly deserves it. On August 28th we will have the Parish Barbeque in the afternoon. Mark your calendars. Next week’s speaker at all the Masses will be Rev. Barnabas Kileu, C.S.Sp.,who will speak on behalf of the Missionary Cooperative Appeal. There will be a second collection for the missions. Remember to go to usccb.org or drvc.org for information about the third edition of the Roman Missal, which will be used beginning November 27th of this year. Thanks to Bob Joyce, the pro at Southampton Golf Club, for giving free lessons to our altar servers. Maybe one of them will win the Masters!
REMINDER: August is upon us and books and teachers have to be in place for Religious Education classes. We still do not have the registration forms for all children in the program. Please stop into the office as soon as possible to register your
child/children for the 2011 –2012 classes. Thank you.

Parents of children who will be entering first grade in September: If your child is entering the first grade and you want him/her to receive the sacraments in the parish, it is time to register them for the Religious Education Program if they are not attending Our Lady of the Hamptons or some other Catholic School. Religious Education Registration forms are now available on the parish website: www.sacredheartsofjesusandmary.org. Please remember that children are required to attend each year from first to eighth grades, in order to be prepared for the receiving of Confirmation in the eighth grade. Also attendance each week is a must unless the child is sick or has a good reason for missing a class. Please encourage the school and coaches not to schedule games or practices on Wednesday afternoon or evening or Sunday mornings. It is up to all of us to encourage the importance of Religious Education in our community. Please check the website for meetings and Announcements. FEAST OF FAITH The Preface: Thanksgiving The preface of the Mass has been called “a poem, the
cry of joy and recognition, the song of the world
discovering its salvation . . . the certitude of faith
making hope spring forth” (Philippe Béguerie, quoted
in The Mass, Lucien Deiss, The Liturgical Press,
Collegeville, MN, 1992, p. 70). The preface takes up
the last words of the dialogue, and expresses briefly
and simply why we are grateful, why it is right and
just to give thanks and praise to God. On feast days,
the preface sings of the specific mystery or saint we
celebrate; in Ordinary Time, the Sunday and weekday
prefaces express our gratitude for God’s gift of the
Son, Jesus Christ, in whom we have redemption and
newness of life. The prefaces offer a succinct account
of what God has done for us in Christ; they express
the mystery of faith, always relating it to us, to our
lives. “By his birth we are reborn,” we hear in Preface
IV for Sundays in Ordinary Time. “By his suffering
we are freed from sin. By his rising from the dead we
rise to everlasting life.” Yes, we have cause to give
God thanks and praise. —Corinna Laughlin, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

OUR LADY OF THE HAMPTONS
The school community of OLH is actively seeking additional donors and sponsors for the Wellness Center—Classroom extension. This project will provide four additional classrooms as well as a full gymnasium with suspended running track at the school. The first stages of the project have been funded totally by foundation grants, family and local fund-raising efforts. The completion of the building, expected in late spring 2012, will depend upon the ability of the school to raise an additional $700,000 over the coming months. There are several memorial opportunities available in this gymnasium-classroom extension. There are brochures available at the doors of the Church. Anyone wishing to make a donation toward this effort is asked to contact the school at 283-9140. Registration for the 2011-2012 school year for kindergarten thru grade 8 is now completed, with waiting lists in every grade. There IS room available in the pre-school program at St. Rosalie’s campus in Hampton Bays. A fully licensed program for three and four year olds is operated in a modern building. Students who attend OLH pre-school are given priority of enrollment when it comes time for kindergarten. Please call 283-9140 for information.

PREPARING FOR THE NEW TRANSLATION OF THE MASS
What Is a Roman Missal? On the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011,
Catholic parishes in the United States will begin
praying the texts of the Mass using a new English
translation of The Roman Missal. The Roman Missal
contains what the Church refers to as the “proper”
antiphons for entrance and Communion time (in the
United States, with the approval of our bishops, we
commonly substitute hymns and songs for these
“proper” antiphons). The Missal also contains prayers
such as the Sign of the Cross and the greetings used at
Mass. The opening prayer or Collect, the prayer over
the bread and wine at the preparation of the gifts, and
the Prayer after Communion are all found in the
Missal, as are the different Eucharistic Prayers that
are used at Mass and the blessings at the end of the
liturgy. The Missal also contains all of the parts of the
Mass that the people say or sing, such as the “I
confess,” the Gloria, the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, the
Lamb of God, and our other responses. Some of these
prayers are changed with the new translation; others
remain the same. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

KID’S PAGE Prayers and history of the Church
______________________ July 31, 2011 Today we remember St. Ignatius of Loyola, who lived at the court of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. He enjoyed wealth and glory until he was wounded in battle. As he spent the next painful months recovering, the only books he could find were about Christ and the saints. Ignatius decided to live his life for God’s glory rather than his own. When he was well, Ignatius gave his money to the poor, hung his sword at Our Lady’s shrine, and became a man of prayer. He and his friends formed a religious order called the Society of Jesus, or “Jesuits” for short. They dedicated themselves to reforming and serving the Church as teachers and missionaries. Today thousands of Jesuits around the world are inspired by the energy and wisdom of Ignatius. Reading: Ephesians 1:3-6 Listen to the words of the Apostle Paul: Brothers and sisters: Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ for the spiritual blessings that Christ has brought us from heaven! Before the world was created, God had Christ choose us to live with him and to be his holy and innocent and loving people. God was kind and decided that Christ would choose us to be God’s own adopted children. God was very kind to us because of the Son he dearly loves, and so we should praise God. The Word of the Lord. Reflection: What spiritual blessings has God given me? How can I raise the level of love in my family today? Adopted children are specially chosen by their parents. How are Christians like children adopted by God? Prayer: God of Grace and wisdom, you continually raise up good people who show with their lives That they follow a holy and loving God. Let our lives be as true as our faith.
July 31, 2011 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time
______________________ THE MONTH OF AUGUST
The eighth month is a time of harvest in the northern hemisphere. We enjoy fresh tomatoes, zucchini, peaches, and other tasty fruits and vegetables. The church turns our eyes to the heavenly harvest with the feasts of the Transfiguration of the Lord (August 6) and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (August 15). The Assumption is a holy day of obligation in the United States, (not this year because it falls on a Saturday) and many parishes celebrate with processions, festivals, picnics, or the blessing of produce. From the end of July until the beginning of September, the “dog star,” Sirius, rises an sets with the sun. The name Sirius means “burning,” and it is the brightest star in the sky. It is part of the constellation Canis Major, which means “large dog.” These hot, sultry days of late July and early August are often called the “dog days” of summer. Temperatures can rise above 100 degrees during
August, so we have set aside a day to think about the sun (August 12). It is not surprising that August is the traditional month for vacations. People enjoy
taking time from work and heading to the mountains or the beach to cool off. Vacation is an excellent time to pray with the whole family.
Our Apostle of the month is Bartholomew (August 24). Other new Testament saints remembered in August are Mary, the mother of Jesus (August 15,22), John the Baptist (August 29), Joseph of Arimathea (August 31), and Nicodemus (August 31).
