NEWSLETTER: 6th May 2015 TERM 2, WEEK 3

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to Week Three of our Term, and now that Swimming lessons have concluded, don't our boys and girls look splendid in

their Winter Uniform? My thanks is extended to all parents for your efforts to ensure our children are correctly attired, and wearing

their uniform with pride. This Friday afternoon, our hard working Parents and Friends Association will conduct the Mothers’ Day

Afternoon Tea - as this most important of roles in our society is highlighted and celebrated this Sunday. Please join us for this special

occasion, and enjoy being treated in a special and loving way by your children.

Learning

Today at our first Professional Learning Community Meeting for this term, our teaching staff gathered to identify, initially from a

personal perspective, and then in collaboration with others, our shared beliefs and values about Teaching and Learning. This very

significant step, will determine all future actions, and areas of focus at Sacred Heart. We anticipate presenting our beliefs and values,

together with the associated practices that flow from these, to our School Community this term.

Next Tuesday at our Staff Meeting, we will all work with our School Improvement Advisor, Mrs Eileen Climo, and our assigned

School Support Consultant, Ms Tamara Boyer, on the examination of student achievement data, (including school means over time,

value added residuals, and individual student gains). Both our curriculum strengths, and areas to focus on for development this year,

will be identified.

Engagement

As the provision of a safe and supportive environment is always our priority, I would like to offer a special thank you to everyone

for their continued efforts to assist our boys and girls with the morning and after school routines. In particular, our senior students

are setting a positive example to our younger students by moving around the school and on walkways safely, and by only entering

classrooms from 8.30am, when teaching staff are in attendance. As the mornings this week are signalling a chilly change, many of our

children are making use of the Library, where it is very welcoming and warm! Games and books make for a wonderful way to start

the day. The drive through zone continues to flow smoothly when everyone moves to the designated bays for pick up and drop off.

Please do not park in the drive through zone.

Our first Assembly for the term will be conducted this Friday at 9.00am. Teachers are preparing merit certificates for two students,

and I look forward to presenting these this week, and sharing a coffee with parents and visitors following Assembly, in the first of

our Parent and Principal Coffee Chats. Please join us if you are able, as I am keen to gain an even greater knowledge of our Sacred

Heart community.

In preparation for the identification of some future directions for the Parents and Friends Association, a workshop meeting is

scheduled for next Wednesday, 13th May at 7.00 pm. Mr Andrew Del Marco will facilitate presentations from our Sacred Heart

School Board Chair, Mr Stephen Brown, our Assistant Principal, Mrs Carolyn Perlini, and myself. It is anticipated that several big

ticket ideas will arise from discussions, with a view to further refinement and wider consultation. Please join us in the library, for

what is hoped will be a productive workshop, generating direction and guidance about what are priorities for our Parents and

Friends Association, in coming months. In addition, an Occupational Safety and Health audit of the school’s facilities is a priority

in coming weeks to assess areas requiring immediate attention, and the identification of items that will require attention in the

medium and longer term. This too, will provide the School Board, with some clarity about maintenance needs.

Discipleship

This Thursday, our Year Four parents will gather for the Sacrament of Eucharist Information evening in the Library at 7.00pm. This

very important milestone in your child's faith journey is a time of celebration and preparation. The connection our children make

to celebrations within their family, being centred around the table and the sharing of meals together, and celebrations within their

parish family being centred around the altar and the meal of Holy Communion, is made so much easier, when children experience

Parish celebrations often. As a school, we look forward to supporting you, as the primary educators of your children, with

preparation for this very special Sacramental journey . The Religious Education programme here at school, offers your child a basic

understanding of Eucharist, but the opportunity to deepen this understanding, and experience of the sacraments, is provided by

you as parents, when you ensure your child is able to attend Mass regularly, and reflect on how the sacraments make continued

contributions to their developing faith.

I look forward to meeting with you all on Thursday evening, as together with our Parish Priest, Father Peter, Mrs Nadia Napoli,

our Parish Sacramental coordinator, and Mrs Renee Byrne-King, we all commit to this most special of journeys.

Last Sunday, saw many of our children participating and leading within the parish, as our Year Five Family Mass was celebrated.

Thank you for supporting your children on this day, and for the Morning Tea contributions that added to the sense of fellowship

we all enjoyed. Special thanks also to Miss Claire Cooper, and our Assistant Principals, Mrs Renee Byrne-King and Mrs Carolyn

Perlini, for their support of our children and the background preparations.

I was complimented about how smart our children looked in their beautiful winter uniform last Thursday, at the pre launch event

of the Archbishop’s Life Link Day, where together with all metropolitan Catholic schools, we were treated to a very informative

presentation by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe, focusing on the great work here in the Archdiocese by many of our Catholic

agencies. The call for us to “serve the poor” and those who are less fortunate than us, will present our school with the opportunity

for some innovative and student driven ideas to be initiated. Mrs Perlini and I were accompanied by Nathan Le and Hannah

Potula, as Senior student representatives of the Pastoral Care Committee, and their reflections about the day can be found later in

today's newsletter.

In closing, can I affirm you all for the great work that continues on the home front as we progress with the demands of this term.

Colder mornings can make for slower than normal starts to the day- please continue to assist your children with organisation and

preparations the night before- this leads to a greater sense of independence- our ultimate goal! I thank everyone for their

continued prayers for Hamish, and his devoted family, from St Patrick's School in Katanning. Hamish remains in intensive care at

Princess Margaret Hospital, with small, but encouraging signs each day.

Many thanks and God Bless,

Mrs Tanya McGuire

Year 5 Family Mass On Sunday, 3rd May, our lovely Year 5 families assisted Fr Peter in leading our second Family Mass for 2015. Thank you to the many Sacred Heart families who attended; it was wonderful to see so many people there. A special thanks to Miss Cooper for preparing the students and to Fr Peter for leading the mass on Sunday. Thank you also to Mrs Ammoscato and the choir members for leading the congregation in the hymn singing. The morning tea following the mass was also lovely, and very well attended. Thank you to all the parents who contributed the delicious food. We look forward to the next Family Mass, which will be facilitated by the Kindy and Pre-Primary classes and will take place on Sunday, 7th June, Term 2. SPORTS NEWS SWIMMING TRAINING is underway. Well done to the children who attended training at Beatty Park on MONDAY at 3.30pm – 4.30pm. Come along and join the team as our coach is Andy and the training is free. Just pay to enter the pool. Already the feedback has been extremely positive and encouraging. Take this opportunity to get international coaching. Handy Hint - Wrap a hot water bottle in the swimming towel so it is nice and warm at the end of training. (From the Women’s Weekly) CROSS COUNTRY TRAINING - Every Tuesday and Fr iday morning at 7.45 at HYDE PARK. Become a member of the 20k team. If you have run 20km by JUNE 8th, the SHPS Cross Country event, you will receive a certificate to acknowledge your efforts this term. Laps are recorded each session and have been backdated to session one, so a lot of children are well on the way to achieving the goal. Come along and improve your health and well being and feel proud of yourself that you accepted the challenge! Have a go! Children who attend training on Tuesday morning can stay in their sport uniform for the rest of the day. ONLY those children have permission. Everyone else in Years 3, 5 and 6 must wear winter uniform. Thanks so much to Maria Devlin (Myles and Lachlan’s mother) who runs an amazing session on Friday morning with the runners. While you cover them your child/children can read them. Thank you, Mrs Sue Hanford.

LifeLink Day Pre-Launch Last Thursday students from Year 6, along with Mrs McGuire and Mrs Perlini, had the privilege of representing Sacred Heart Primary School for the Pre-Launch of LifeLink Day. The LifeLink organisation, established in 1994 by the Archdiocese of Perth, provides for the ongoing financial and promotional support of agencies established or assisted by the Church. Here is what our two student representatives had to say about this event:

On the 30th of April, Hannah and I (Nathan), Mrs Perlini and Mrs McGuire had the opportunity to represent our school at the pre-launch of LifeLink Day. It was located at Good Shepherd Primary School. When we arrived at Good Shepherd we received badges, two information booklets and a cardboard box full of LifeLink posters to put around the school. We were greeted by the Executive Director of Catholic Education in WA, Dr Tim McDonald. Once we found our seats and everyone was seated, the Most Rev Archbishop Timothy Costelloe began with an opening speech. Then we watched a video about a few of the LifeLink agencies, which gave us a better understanding about LifeLink. LifeLink helps people that are in need from people who have donated and raised money. Then Archbishop Costelloe explained to everyone about the Link Up Chain that our school will be involved in on LifeLink Day on the 3rd June. After the Archbishop’s address, the students had the opportunity to ask Archbishop Costelloe and Bishop Sproxton questions about LifeLink. After the launch we were given a variety of delicious treats at a special morning tea. It was certainly a great experience for Hannah and I. We were very happy that Mrs McGuire and Mrs Perlini chose us to learn about LifeLink. As the ArchBishop has quoted “Together, we can make a difference”. (Nathan Le and Hannah Potula)

Confirmation Information Evening Thank you to all the Year 6 parents and parents of the parish candidates for attending the Confirmation Parent Information night last Thursday. A thank you to the presenters, Father Peter Bianchini and Nadia Napoli, the Sacrament Coordinator for the parish, for sharing their knowledge with the candidates’ parents. Carolyn Perlini and Renee Byrne-King (Acting Assistant Principals)

Eucharist Information Evening A reminder that the Eucharist (First Holy Communion) Information Night will take place tomorrow night, in the School Library at 7.00pm. The candidates are not required to attend this meeting. Carolyn Perlini and Renee Byrne-King (Acting Assistant Principals)
