From the Deacon’s desk… January… Month of the Holy Name of Jesus Our Church asks us to remember in a special way the Holy Name of Jesus, during the month of January. As I was preparing, an Hour of Recollection to the Holy Name, I came across a writing of Saint Alphonsus Liguori’s Discourse of the Name of Jesus. What a meaningful work! For today’s column, I would like to paraphrase some of this Saint’s thoughts: “… the name of Jesus consoles us; for when we invoke Jesus, we find relief in all our afflic-tions.” “… what fear can that sinner have who has re-course to Jesus Christ, who offered Himself to obtain our pardon from His Father.” “…the name of Jesus defends us … it defends us against all the deceits and assaults of our ene-mies.” “He has given Him a name that is which so powerful that it is venerated in Heaven, on earth and in Hell. … Powerful in Heaven because it can obtain all graces for us, … on earth because it can save all who invoke it with devotion … powerful in hell because it makes the devils tremble.” Blessed be the name of Jesus!

For the past two weeks, our parish has had a signifi-cant number of funerals. I know that not everyone can make it to funerals, but when you can it is a beautiful thing to have members of the faith commu-nity present as we commend our beloved dead back to God. Too often, the people who are bringing their beloved dead are far from the life of the Church and it is a great opportunity for us to welcome them back in their time of mourning. I was reminded of this once again recently when I had a parishioner come to me and introduce himself to me. He told me about how his coming back to church came about when his wife passed away. God is victorious over death and so even at the death of a loved one, He seeks to bring about life into those of us left here. Is there more that we can do to help our brothers and sisters? What more can we do to help those who have ill family members or those who have lost a loved one? Since the beginning of the new year, I have also had a few celebrations of the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. This is often a forgotten sacrament but it has just as much importance as all the other seven Sacraments. If you know of anyone who has a gravely ill family member or anyone who is close to death, encourage them to call me for the Anointing of the Sick. I have put a little Catechetical piece in this week’s bulletin regarding what this Sacrament is and does. It is also on our webpage. And of course, we are always meant to be praying for our sick brothers and sisters.
In Christ, Fr. Eric

What is the Anointing of the Sick? What is the Anointing of the Sick? What is the Anointing of the Sick? What is the Anointing of the Sick?: It is one of the seven Sacraments and it is often the last one to be received. Through the sacrament of anoint-ing, Christ strengthens the faithful who are af-flicted by illness, providing them with the strong-est means of support.
What does it do?What does it do?What does it do?What does it do? This Sacrament has primarily a spiritual effect. Although if it is God's will, physi-cal healing can be brought about through it. The spiritual effects are such that there is healing from sin, the grace to face illness with trust in God, the strength to resist temptation to doubt God's love, and the spiritual aid to prepare for one's passing from this life. This anointing also has an effect for the whole church as it unites the sick person to Passion of Christ and so makes the Church ever more united to her Source of life and love.
Who can receive this Sacrament?Who can receive this Sacrament?Who can receive this Sacrament?Who can receive this Sacrament? Any member of the Christian faithful (baptized) who health is seriously (gravely) impaired by sickness or old age. As the Sacrament should not be delayed till the last moments of life, it is envisioned that the person is still conscious and communicative. In order to receive the Anointing fruitfully, the re-cipient must be in a state of grace (without seri-ous/grave sin). It is for this reason that if the pa-tient is communicative, the priest will offer the Sacrament of Confession before the anointing.
