Help Us Make Our Goal!

Good Friday Fast and Abstinence The Bishops of the US prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are 14 years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Good Friday. Further, all persons 18 years of age and older, up to and including their 59th birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light.

Palm Sunday Prayer Almighty and ever living God, In your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever. Amen

Good Friday Collection For The Holy Land Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Good Friday, April 14, we celebrate the mystery of the Lord’s Passion, contemplating the sacrifice by which Jesus redeemed the human race from sin and death. It also has been our longstanding tradition as Catholics to offer alms in support of the Catholic Community in the Holy Land. As directed by our Holy Father, Pope Francis, funds generated by this collection support programs and services in the Holy Land. Support is needed to maintain the sacred places, to provide educational and pastoral programs as well as outreach programs for the poor through established charitable institutions. On behalf of those Christians and others in so much nee, I seek your most generous and sacrificial support of the Collection for the Holy Land on April 14, 2017. I know that God our Father will reward your generosity beyond all measure. Gratefully and with best wishes in Jesus Christ, Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.

Sacred Heart THIS MONDAY

Many hands make light work! We are looking for a brigade of people to clean the church on

Monday, April 10th at 10AM .

In Sympathy Please remember the soul of the late, Joanne Novak & Stanley Rzasa who passed away to the Lord. May they find happiness with the Lord and their family and

friends find consolation in Him, too.

PIEROGI THANK YOU! A very special thank you to Barbara & Bill Schwindt, who coordinated our pierogi fundraiser. Also, thank you to everyone who participated in some way. If you worked one day or everyday, donated items needed, or purchased pierogi, you were a special part in this fund-raiser. It is very hard work but also rewarding to work with friends and help your Parish during the two weeks. We must thank St. Joseph’s in Collingdale for the use of their facilities.

Palm Sunday

Also known as Passion Sunday, this Sunday

before Easter remembers Jesus’’ triumphant

entry into Jerusalem near the end of a public

ministry spent almost entirely outside

Israel’s capital city. When Jesus entered the

city with his entourage, people laid palm

branches on the road before him and greeted

him as the long-awaited Messiah, shouting,

“Blessed is the king who comes in the name

of the Lord!”

Their celebrating didn’t last long. As they

heard his teachings and saw his behavior,

both religious leaders and people on the

streets turned against Jesus. Within days,

the adoring crowds were shouting, “Crucify

him!” Each Gospel relates the next few days

differently, but the common elements are:

* Jesus entered Jerusalem and began to

teach the people about the Kingdom of God

and the leaders about their hypocrisy and

God’s coming judgment;

* He threw money-changers out of the

Temple and sparked a growing conspiracy

against him; he shared a “last supper’ with

his friends;

* He was betrayed by Judas Iscariot, one of

his key disciples; and, after being arrested,

was handed over to the Roman authorities

for execution as an enemy of Caesar. Palm

Sunday worship typically begins with a

Procession of Palms and then moves on to

chronicle the rest of the week with a somber

reading of the Passion Gospel (this year

Matthew 21: 1-11), in which the rejection,

suffering and death of Jesus are on full

display and Christians are reminded that

their faith originates in Jesus’’ humble

submission to death on a cross. Worship

typically ends in silence, and the stage is set

for Holy Week.

Dear Friends, Now that the annual observance of Passover is drawing near, I take this opportunity to send greetings to the Jewish community in the Philadelphia area. Both on my own, and in union with the clergy and laity of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, I offer my prayerful best wishes on this holy occasion.

We live in a time when global issues like war and persecution have resulted in many newcomers in our midst. They are often made to feel very alienated. The experience of the people of the Exodus has something very timely for us to learn. They were urged to be just and kind to the stranger. We must apply this teaching to our day with greater devotion than ever. In addition, the Passover miracle reminds us of the supreme power of our heavenly Father. As we recall in wonder once again the deliverance wrought by divine providence, we must remember in our day never to waver from our commitment to the pursuit of authentic justice and peace, and to do so without fear.

As you gather for Passover observances this year, I pray that the local Jewish community will find renewed courage from the Exodus experience in the face of recent threats and anti-Semetic attacks. You must draw strength from the fact that the same loving Father in heaven who guided Moses and the chosen people continues to guide you now even in the midst of ongoing challenges. Let us be emboldened to work with greater zeal to assure a climate of respect and religious freedom in our time and place. This is my prayer and my hope. Sincerely yours, +Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. Archbishop of Philadelphia
