Ethan Mitchell
Ethan Mitchell is a Sacred Heart Old Boy and a New
Zealand representative track cyclist. Ethan began road
cycling in Year 9 at Sacred Heart and competed in this
discipline for a year.
In Year 10 Ethan purchased a new bike from Justine Grace who asked him to trial track riding as
he had the right build for it. From here Ethan’s hard work and focus has seen him go on to win
Gold at the Junior Track World Champs in Capetown 2008; Bronze in the Keirin and Silver in
both the 1km Time Trial and Team Sprint at the 2009 Youth Olympics; Gold in the Team Sprint
at the 2009 Junior Track World Champs and Silver in the Team Sprint at the 2010
Commonwealth Games.
At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he competed in the men's team sprint for the national team
and finished 5th overall which enabled him to be eligible for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Ethan then went on to win a silver medal alongside Sam Webster and Eddie Dawkins in the
team sprint at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He also won a bronze medal at the 2017 UCI Track
Cycling World Championships in Hong Kong in the sprint event; the first New Zealander who
won a world championship medal in an individual event.
