Easter 2014 Recently, Br Michael Green FMS (Director of Marist Schools Australia) presented a session entitled The Scriptural Foundations of Marist Life and Mission to the 25 Sacred Heart staff undertaking the Marist Methodology unit of the Graduate Certificate of Education. We have been conducting the course throughout the term after school on a Thursday. Each session has a different focus which relates to Catholic Education in the Marist Tradition. The verse has a timeless appeal as it reflects the mystery of the Resurrection and the question of faith – do we understand and do we believe? Are these some of the thoughts being held by John and Peter in the painting? The eyes, the hands and the faces seem to portray a range of emotions and thoughts. NewsletterIssue 6: Term 1, Week 11 Thursday 10 April, 2014

From the Principal…Dear members of the Sacred Heart College Middle School Community

As Term 1 concludes I offer a general vote of thanks for all members of the Sacred Heart College community who have contributed to our Marist educational mission at both the Middle and Senior Schools this year. The term has gone well, special achievements have been recognised, significant community days have been well conducted, including the numerous parent teacher interviews and now we move into the term break to rejuvenate body, mind and spirit.

Easter 2014Recently, Br Michael Green FMS (Director of Marist Schools Australia) presented a session entitled The Scriptural Foundations of Marist Life and Mission to the 25 Sacred Heart staff undertaking the Marist Methodology unit of the Graduate Certificate of Education. We have been conducting the course throughout the term after school on a Thursday. Each session has a different focus which relates to Catholic Education in the Marist Tradition.

Br Michael asked us to bring a few favourite pieces of scripture along to share. A simple yet engaging and enriching activity – when was the last time you shared a favourite piece of scripture?

Each year I try to celebrate Easter in a slightly different manner so as to pay due respect to the significance of it. Br Michael’s simple task has provided such a focus. There are many scripture passages which ignite a yearning for a better understanding or a significant insight to all that is the story of Easter.

However, John 20:9 – They still did not understand the scripture which said that he must rise from death – is set in a context of the Apostles Peter and John rushing to the tomb on the word of Mary Magdelene that Jesus’ body was missing. To add to the context is this beautiful painting by Eugene Bernand depicting the two scurrying to the tomb – Peter the older and more harrowed figure and John the younger, exuberant disciple.

The verse has a timeless appeal as it reflects the mystery of the Resurrection and the question of faith – do we understand and do we believe? Are these some of the thoughts being held by John and Peter in the painting? The eyes, the hands and the faces seem to portray a range of emotions and thoughts. How would we respond to this situation for scripture which remains mere text is not sacred – it is the inherent meaning and values behind it which are precious. Something to ponder this Easter!

Stations of the Cross – An InvitationAnother means of engaging in the Easter ceremonies would be to attend the Stations of the Cross traditionally conducted on the surrounds of Paringa Hall and enacted by the Brighton Parish Antioch group. This is a very well attended family event and all members of the community are welcome. The ceremony will be conducted by Reverend Monsignor Ian Dempsey, Brighton Parish Priest. It commences at noon and given the large numbers attending it is advised you allow time for walking into the College Grounds.

So, in conclusion, may you and your loved ones be enriched by the blessings of Easter – Faith, Hope and Love!

From the Head of SHCMS Dear Parents/Carers

Sunday’s Gospel (John 11:1-45) tells of the infamous story of the raising of Lazarus. This event starts the chain of events leading to Jesus’ death and resurrection. John uses the story to remind early converts of the life-and-death consequences of choosing to follow Jesus.

Through death, Lazarus had been cut off from his family and friends, bound like a mummy and buried. Jesus brought him out of the tomb, restored him to his family and spoke words of liberation: ‘Unbind him, let him go free’. Some questions to ponder as we enter Holy Week:• What are the things that keep us tied up and unable to rise to new life with Christ? • How can we free ourselves from these things? • How have our Lenten practices helped make more room for God in our lives?

Ms Kate FallonI have taken this excerpt from the letter Kate wrote to her students and their families this week. I wish her all the best in her travels and know that she will bring many of the rewarding aspects of her pilgrimage back into our community.

‘I am writing to inform you that I will be taking leave for Term 2. I have been given the opportunity to represent Sacred Heart College Middle School on the 2014 Marist Pilgrimage. After the pilgrimage I will be staying on in Europe for some personal travel.

I am pleased to announce that Ms Rebecca Bond will be my replacement next term. Rebecca is an experienced teacher and has been working with the boys in Year 9 as Chris Ottens’ replacement across various subject areas.

I am very much looking forward to the opportunity to develop my understanding of the Marist Charism in various contexts and I am proud to represent our College community. I look forward to coming back and sharing my experience with them in Term 3.

Mr Sam PhillipsThis term we farewell Sam who has diligently managed and supported all matters in relation to our IT Helpdesk position for a number of years. Sam has accepted a position with PACT IT as a Systems Engineer. On behalf of SHCMS, I would like to thank Sam for the hard work and dedication that he has brought to his current role and wish him all the best for his future endeavours.

HolidaysI would like to thank the staff and students for their hard work and many fine efforts over what has been an extremely productive and busy term – a term which has seen:• over 200 new students settle into our SHCMS community• the roll out of 700 Chromebooks• staff and students moving from MS Office into Google Apps• staff training in Google and Google Education Apps• Staff training in data analysis• 685 students successfully participate in camps locally and interstate• over 300 students participating in summer CEAs• music and other parent evenings• curriculum connections with Marymount and SHC Senior

I am always impressed by “the extra mile” that staff, parents and carers go to in supporting their sons and students – being present is certainly a Marist quality that is clearly alive and well in our community. As we enter the Easter holiday season, perhaps ‘being present’ with your sons and family could be a quality to consider. Being ‘present’ can take on many forms, but most importantly our students and your sons crave the positive attention, love and care only parents, carers and families can provide.

Have a relaxing break. Kind regards,

Tim Mullin

SHCMS MassesYou are invited to join us each Monday and Friday for Mass in our School Chapel at 8:55am and for a cuppa afterwards. Three Masses are held in the Hall – The Welcome Mass, Feast of Sacred Heart and Celebration of the Assumption.

If you or the boys’ grandparents (or any other family members or friends) would like to join this group, you’d be most welcome. Just come.

Coins for CaritasThis year’s theme for Caritas Australia is taken from John’s Gospel – ‘Have life and have it to the full.’ The reign of God is the reign of equality, justice, freedom, truth, beauty, inclusion…yes, fullness of life.

Sacred Heart College Middle School boys gathered for ‘Coins for Caritas’ covering the letters with coins. They are contributing actively that others may have life to the full.

Easter Eggs for Hutt StreetOnce again, SHCMS boys have been extremely generous in gathering a huge number of Easter Eggs for the Hutt Street center for homeless persons. On Wednesday April 9 Year9 Sacristans, Jordan Kennedy, Rick Rabbah, Jack Sires, Logan Kelly and John Larmer delivered the boxes to Hutt Street and had a tour of the facilities. The boys were moved by the care and safe place provided by Hutt Street together with the concern that there are actually people without homes in Adelaide.

Celebrating the Life, Death and Resurrection of JesusAs we conclude our term and prepare for Easter and the holidays the boys gathered in the Marist Hall on Wednesday to celebrate the Life, Death and Resurrection of Jesus in prayer. As was shared in the conclusion, ‘God wants all people to have fullness of life, freedom from oppression, equality and acceptance of all people, a spirit of social justice, a spirit of helping others and connection with each other and nature’. As they sang the concluding song, the familiar and almost school theme song, ‘Hearts on Fire’, the boys really sounded out the line ‘Stand Up! Live the story…’ We were reminded that yes, every day is when we stand up, metaphorically, for justice, inclusion, acceptance, patience and much more. Our everyday thoughts and actions matter and continue to bring the Reign of God to our everyday!

Year 7 Swimming CarnivalThe debut Year 7 Swimming Day was the place to be last Friday, 4 April. Blessed with a beautiful day of sunshine, we kick-started the carnival with the competitive 50 metre races, house against house. The boys scored points for starting in their heat and earned bonus points for places they finished in. In true house spirit we had many boys step up and race again and again to earn points for their team in freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. We even had some brave boys tackle the challenging 50 metre butterfly event. There was plenty of carnival atmosphere as the boys cheered each other on down the pool.

The novelty relays at the end of the day challenged the house teams to diving for rings on the bottom of the pool, tube races and the much loved ‘hang the washing on the line’ relay. The highlight was possibly the class relay at the end of the day, where teachers Mr Rice and Mr Williams took on the Class Captains and Sacristans from each home group in a dash across the pool. The results of this event were somewhat controversial with the teachers taking the crown, while some of the Class Captains and Sacristans protested the place judging.

A result that could not be questioned was the winning house for the day, Marcellin took out the trophy by a whopping 70 points. Marist came in second place with Joseph only one point behind in third. Results aside, all of the boys were winners on the day with the way in which they conducted themselves and demonstrated wonderful house spirit. A big thank you to our volunteers and the staff who chipped in to make the day a success, it was a great way to finish off Term 1 in Year 7.

Christ the King FeteOn Sunday 6 of April the SHCMS Drum Corp performed at the Christ the King Fete. It was a great opportunity for the boys to perform and represent Sacred Heart College Middle School. The Drum Corp were well received by a supportive audience as they performed three piece including Time Travel, Texan and The Fleet. This was the Drum Corps debut performance for 2014 and the students performed very well and displayed excellent musicianship and stage presence. The performance showcased the hard work and talent of our boys and they should all be proud of their efforts and achievements –they have a very exciting year ahead of them.

Thank you to all the parents and carers for their ongoing support of the boys and the music faculty. Further, the students are to be commended on their efforts. Finally, thank you to Paul Lewis for his continued guidance of the boys for what was a very rich musical experience.

WOMADelaide Schools DayReport by Year 6 Media Team

On 7 March four of the media club members and Mr Ellul’s Performing Arts class travelled by bus to WOMADelaide in the city near the Botanic Gardens. It was a great day, we got to see some great performances and we even got to cook pizzas with other schools! We also got some great pictures with the SLR camera as well as the cameras we borrowed from the library.

Some of us students were on TV, being interviewed by Channel Ten News as well as Behind The News!

At WOMAD we interviewed a woman named Emel Mathlouthi from Tunisia who performed to us with her guitar while singing. She started guitar when she was 22. She said that music inspires her because it can allow you to travel from a tiny place and makes you dream.

Year 9 Food TechnologyThis term in Food Technology the students have been dividing their time between practical and theoretical components. In theory, we have been looking at the ‘story behind food,’ investigating the journey food takes before we purchase it, its impact on the environment, economy and ethical factors as well as comparing ‘industrial’ with ‘local’ food. Meanwhile, in practical lessons, the students have been learning to make healthier options for some of their fast food favourites as well as cooking and eating a variety of ‘different’ foods which many of them have not tried before.

The highlight of this term for the Monday morning and Tuesday afternoon classes was cooking a meal for a significant person. After a practice run and lengthy discussions around technique and front of house expectations, the students prepared a meal of Teriyaki Chicken and Quinoa Salad. The students had a lot of fun doing this as their culinary skills were tested under pressure, beneath the watchful eye of their family members. The boys excelled in this situation, plating up high quality food much to the delight of their audience.

A big thank you needs to go to all of the family members who gave up their time to come in and experience this ‘Food Tech meets Master Chef’ event. Their feedback was invaluable and greatly appreciated by the students. We are so lucky to have such an amazing learning space, even more so when we have the opportunity to welcome guests in so they can see it in action.

SHC Centenary Celebration & Fundraiser

Saturday, 11 October 2014

To commemorate 100 years since the Marist Brothers located Sacred Heart College at Paringa Hall, the SHC community (led by the SHC Foundation) is planning a major fundraising event. The College plans to memorialise this significant historical milestone with a major refurbishment of the College Science Laboratory estimated to cost around $500,000. This is a much needed capital project for the College to allow it to provide students with modern and relevant science teaching facilities. Subject to funding, it is hoped the work will commence as early as November 2014.

The SHC Community comprising parents, friends and old collegians, would like to make a major contribution of funds towards that refurbishment. We are therefore planning an evening cocktail function and auction utilising the beautiful rooms at Paringa Hall and the facilities in the De Bourg Performing Arts Centre on Saturday evening, 11 October 2014. We are hoping to have 400 guests (parents, friends and old collegians) at this event with our target to raise $100,000 to contribute to the science laboratory project.

We are seeking support for the SHC Foundation volunteer base with a group of motivated and interested team of parents, ideally of 2013 Year 9 and Year 10 students to form a management committee to plan and execute this major event. The administration support of the SHC Foundation will be available to help the committee.

So please put 11 October 2014 in your diary and consider volunteering for this committee to make a material difference for your children at SHC.

If you are interested, please register your details with Jane Ping, Foundation & Old Collegians Association at [email protected]
