SACRED HEART PARISH CENSUS: This fall
we will undertake the BIG task of updating our data-
base of all our parishioners. It has been a long time
since we reviewed our contact information for our

Community. If you have moved or changed phone
numbers or e-mail addresses, we want to hear from
you! You can be proactive and contact Carol Guen-
ther with your updated information (425-450-3910

us to contact you later this Fall. This information
will help our staff be more productive and will help
all of us have a clearer picture of our unique parish
community. Thanks for your cooperation.

UPDATE ON ST. JEAN VIANNEY IN BATON
ROUGE —Father Tom Ranzino, pastor at St. Jean Vian-
ney in Baton Rouge, sent an email with updates about
their parish. Two neighboring parishes provided meals
for all the St. Jean Vianney parishioners after Masses last
weekend, and several area parishes are offering support
in a variety of ways for clean-up at the parish and for
parishioners’ homes.
He said: “We plan on reopening Pre School the day after
Labor Day; the affected School classrooms by mid- Sep-
tember ; the rectory by October and the Gymnasium by
November. This past Thursday, Bishop Muench met
with priests and deacon to talk about two topics: The
recent shootings in Baton Rouge and the Flood of
2016. It became clear to us rather quickly that the two
events merge. Flood waters do not wash away every-
thing. Issues of prejudice and violence are still below the
surface—but when the boats came to save people, no
matter if they were rich or poor, white or black, old or
young, there was room in the boats for everyone. Per-
haps the flood waters will help clear our vision to see
that common humanity which will inform our work to-
gether for the future. There is much work in both areas to
do.”
See their parish website for more information:
www.stjeanvianney.org. As I mentioned last weekend at
all the Masses, we have set aside $5000 from our Parish
Giving Fund through our stewardship of treasure com-
mitment. In addition, we raised almost $6000 at the
Masses last weekend. If you would like to contribute to
this fund that we will send to St. Jean Vianney, please
bring it to the Parish Office by Tuesday, September 6.
Please continue to pray for the Baton Rouge flood vic-
tims.
HEARTS ON FIRE—As we have entered into the month of September, we return to focus on our parish values (DISCIPLES) as described in Hearts on Fire, our parish pastoral plan. During this month we focus on Dis-cernment and on Saint Peter who led the apostles in lis-tening to the voice of God and the direction of Jesus to lead the early Christian community to a deeper relation-ship with Jesus Christ. Let us continue to work together to build up the King-dom of God here at Sacred Heart.
MASS ON MONDAY We will have Mass at 9 AM on Monday, September 5, on Labor Day to pray for all who have honest employment and to pray for those who seek just employment.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK ON THURSDAY We will celebrate the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick on Thursday, September 8, during the 9 AM Mass. Those who are preparing for surgery, who are of advanced age, or those who are seriously ill may be anointed.
MEMORIAL OF SAINT PETER CLAVER
We will celebrate the memorial of Saint Peter Claver (1580/1-1654)on Friday, September 9. He was a “Spanish Jesuit priest, [who] spent his life tending to the needs of African slaves in Colombia, South America. While serv-ing as a missionary, he ministered to the slaves by provid-ing them with food and medicine, washing their wounds, preparing them for Baptism, and witnessing their Marriag-es. He actively pursued lawyers to plead the cases of im-prisoned slaves and prepared criminals for death. Not only did he care for the slaves, but he also preached missions to plantation owners and sailors. The ‘saint of the slaves,’ as St. Peter is often called, died after contracting a plague.” (2016 Sourcebook for Sundays, Seasons, and Weekdays, 287)
PRAYER FOR PEACE IN OUR COMMUNITIES ON FRIDAY
The Catholic bishops of the United States have called for a national day of Prayer for Peace in our Communities in light of the recent outbreak of violence and racial tension in our country. We will pray for this intention at Mass on this coming Friday, the memorial of Saint Peter Claver, a Spanish Jesuit, who helped African slaves in Colombia in the 17th century. We will pray and ask that “our parish may cultivate welcome, extend hospitality, and encourage the participation of people of all cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds and for the courage to have difficult con-versations about racism, and for a better appreciation of how our words and actions – or even our silence – can impact our communities” (USCCB website). Please re-member to pray for peace in our communities on Friday wherever you are.
5 PM YOUTH MASS TO RESUME NEXT SUNDAY
The Sunday 5 PM Youth Mass will resume on Sunday, September 11. This Mass is for high school parishioners and their families to help support “a vibrant youth faith community” at Sacred Heart (see Goal IV in Hearts on Fire).

Pope Francis Jubilee Year Prayer for Mercy
Lord Jesus Christ,
you have taught us to be merciful like the
heavenly Father,
and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him.
Show us your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from be-
ing enslaved by money;
the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness on-
ly in created things;
made Peter weep after his betrayal,
and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words
that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:
“If you knew the gift of God!”
You are the visible face of the invisible Father,
of the God who manifests his power above all by
forgiveness and mercy:
let the Church be your visible face in the world,
its Lord risen and glorified.
You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in
weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those
in ignorance and error:
let everyone who approaches them feel sought after,
loved, and forgiven by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with
its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy
may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church,
with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the
poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and
restore sight to the blind.
We ask this through the intercession of Mary,
Mother of Mercy,
You who live and reign with the Father and the Holy
Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
(Please keep the pilgrims of Sacred Heart in your
prayers, as they prepare for their Holy Year Pilgrimage
October 19-28.)

Administration & Stewardship
PARISH ELECTRONIC GIVING CHANGES COMING
Thank you for your faithful support of our parish and its ever-expanding ministries
and services. It is because of your consistent sacrifice and support that we have been
able to reach out and serve so many in our community.
If you currently donate by credit card, electronic funds transfer (EFT) or online giving
through our parish website, sacredheart.org/parish, please be advised that we have
changed our vendor from Vanco to Our Sunday Visitor (OSV). The “Donate Now”
link on our website now points to the new vendor.
If you currently give online, have recurring credit card payments or EFTs from your
bank account and would like to manage your own account, please contact Christine
Kerr at the parish office. Managing your own account enables you to update contribu-
tion information including account numbers, frequency, amounts and which funds you
would like to contribute to such as Stewardship, St. Vincent de Paul, School Annual
Fund, etc. If you would prefer to have the parish office continue to manage your elec-
tronic giving, we are happy to do that as well.
If you are interested in signing up and creating a new account, you can contact Chris-
tine Kerr, or you can sign up and create a new account directly from the OSV link on
our website.
If you have any questions about the process, or managing your own account, please
contact Christine Kerr at 425-454-9536, ext. 109 or [email protected]. Thank
you for your continued stewardship of time, talent and treasure in support of Sacred
Heart.
TEACHING GRATITUDE Stewardship as a way of life begins in gratitude. Appreciating all the gifts of God that we receive each day is an essen-
tial skill that is best developed early in life. Have you ever wondered what happens when our young children are dis-
missed at the beginning of Mass for the Children’s Liturgy of the Word? Gratitude is one of our goals!
We gather in the Saints Room in a circle and begin by sharing our names and one
thing that was good in our lives from the past week…something for which we are
thankful. This simple sharing prepares us to sing our response: For all the good
things that you do, Lord, we praise and thank you. Then we are ready to hear the
good news of the Gospel story.
Demonstrating gratitude takes many forms—words of thanks, songs about grati-
tude, acts of kindness and sharing, etc. A major ritual act of gratitude for us at
Mass takes place at the Preparation of the Gifts, when the collection is taken up.
The action of passing the basket is an important moment when we can express our
gratitude to God through sharing our treasure, but for those of us who give elec-
tronically, this ritual can seem disconnected from our reality. Not only does it feel
uncomfortable to pass the basket and not put something in it, but it does not model
for our children the correct message. Gratitude to God is not optional!
So, as we continue to become a world that handles financial affairs electronically, we want to be intentional about
demonstrating our gratitude at Mass. One easy, new option is to take an Offering Token with you as you come into
church and you pick up your worship aid. Then, when the basket is passed, you can participate with those who use en-
velopes or give cash, as you say a private prayer of thanksgiving.
Another way to express your gratitude to God is by volunteering to bring up the gifts of bread and wine and treasure at
the Offertory. There is now a sign-up system at the Welcome Table where individuals, couples and whole families can
serve at this important part of the Mass, representing all those gathered to give praise and thanks to our loving God.
Gratitude is an attitude of thankfulness. Let’s live it more fully and teach it more clearly.

Vatican this Sunday. The date chosen for her canonization is the
eve of the 19th anniversary of her death and the date previously es-
tablished at the Vatican for the conclusion of the Year of Mercy pil-
grimage of people like her who are engaged in works of mercy.
We celebrate her canonization at Sacred Heart with the viewing of a

tion this Sunday, Sept. 4th in-between the masses from 9:45am—
