MOTHERS’ DAY

Our Mothers’ Day celebrations were a

big success again this year. Thank you

to all of the Mothers and Grandmothers

who attended. We received some fan-

tastic feedback that we will use in our

reflections in preparation for next

year’s celebration.

Sustainability Facts… FOOD WASTE…did you know?

Australians discard up to 20% of the food they

purchase, worth approximately $1036 every year!

In total this is $8 billion or 4 million tonnes of

food that gets thrown out each year Over 50% of food wasted is fresh food and left

overs Approximately 40% of waste in green bins is

food waste Food waste is the SECOND major contributor to

greenhouse gas in landfills Here are some ways to reduce food waste: Start composting at home – this way, you are

not producing any waste at all and your gar-den will flourish!

Shop smart – plan meals and only buy exactly

what you need for the week‟s meals Store food properly – learn how and where to

store specific products in the fridge and freezer, and they‟re likely to keep longer

Designate one dinner each week as a “use-it-up”

meal - look around in the cupboards and fridge for leftovers and other food that might otherwise get overlooked

OUTDOOR RE-DEVELOPMENT

Please be advised that work to our back

outdoor playground will commence on 11

June 2015. Access to the centre will be

restricted to the front door only

(past the Kindy/Pre-Primary area).

Work to the front playground is due to

commence on 6 July at which time ac-

cess to the centre will be

restricted to the back door

only. Please keep a look out

for the signage around the

centre.

FEEDBACK

Have you read our May policy re-

views or had a look at our Quali-

ty Improvement Plan? We are

seeking parent input into these

areas and would appreciate any

feedback you may have.

From Miss Amee This month the children have really enjoyed

our shopping area where they explored turn

taking and numbers as well as the different

language and speech appropriate for the shop.

Outside the children have been exploring the

fresh sand in the sandpit with the dump

trucks and solving the problem of how to make

a sandcastle that stands up. They have also

been creating rockets and space stations with

the foam blocks.

We have taken a collaborative approach in the

art area with group finger paintings and glu-

ing. We also have the easels out at all times

because the children always come back to

them and enjoy using them.

Finally after many weeks of watching, water-

ing and waiting we decided it was time to pick

the corn in our vegetable patch. The children

were amazed with what they found inside

when we pulled the leaves off the corn. We

made the most of our produce and cooked

some delicious pumpkin and corn scones for

everyone to enjoy. I wonder what we will pick

next?

REMINDERS

Please ensure your child has a

morning and afternoon tea snack

(2-3 items) as well as lunch each

day they attend. Children should

also have an ice pack in their

lunch box.

Children are required to have a

broad brimmed or legionnaire

style hat each day they attend

the service. The should also have

tops/dresses that cover their

shoulders.

NUMERACY CORNER „Upside down‟ is about position and direction

What we do and what it means

Mum: The picture is upside down. Turn it around the other way.

When we talk about turning things around, moving things closer or state which way up something is, children are learning about the position of some-thing. Position (where something is) and direction (where they go) are key ideas in mathematics. Later, children learn to pay attention to position, order and direction.

CAROL’S CORNER This term we have been talking about

sustainability and growing our own veg-

etables. We have purchased a raised

garden bed and in the July school holi-

days we are going to plant some vege-

tables that we can eat for afternoon

tea. We will water them with the left

over water from our drinking contain-

ers to save water.

Vacation care forms will be ready on

Tuesday 2 June and must be returned

by 19 June.

Please note: there is a new email ad-

dress for the centre:

[email protected]. For any en-

quires please use this address.

Thank you for your cooperation

Carol.

This term OSHC children have been focusing on multi cul-

tural activities. The children have worked together to cre-

ate a fantastic poster of their handprints representing

different cultures. Children have also been working hard

as they research places around the world and viewing from

where some of our lovely families come. This is a continu-

ing project and we would love for our families to come and

see what we have created!

Craft has been great fun this term as we have created so

many different styles. We have been improving our skills in

origami and investigating different ways of painting, such as

marble, sponge and swat painting! We have also had a master

chef challenge making delicious cupcakes and treats. We

have had so much fun experimenting with the world of sci-

ence! We have made a bubble bomb and explored the way

electricity works!

During outside play we have enjoyed games of

handball, skipping and soccer. A few of our Year

Six boys kindly gave their time with an Aus Kick

session, demonstrating to the younger children

a few simple football skills. The children were

very appreciative and enjoyed learning Aus Kick

skills . We will continue to practise the skills we

have learnt. We have also been working on team

games to encourage the children to build rela-

tionships with one another in OSHC.

We will continue with our fun and exciting activities in

OSHC and as always invite our families to come see what

we are up too. We are all looking forward to our July

school holidays as they are fast approaching!
