I have to say, as far as little ones go we have been blessed at Sacred Heart, in that for the most part our little ones are pretty well-behaved. This particular day though, they had reached their limit and started throwing a fit. It was one of those epic fits too, where even the cookies from the diaper bag won't work and they just sort of lay on their side kicking their feet, pumping their fists and screaming. Our little friend was about 15 seconds in and mom was about to take them out of the room, when it hit me: the Gospel for the day was the one where Jesus tells His disciples that only those who become like little children can enter the kingdom of God. It was a Holy Spirit moment for sure. Typically we take from that gospel that one needs to be humble and reliant on God just like a little kid to get to heaven but this scene gave a whole new meaning to the scriptures. Here was this kid beyond themselves kicking and screaming, causing a scene and that's what we're supposed to be like? Yet when Jesus makes the analogy He knows full well all that comes with being a little child. It's not like kids didn't whine in the ancient world. Sometimes we get this nostalgic idea that before 1960 kids never misbehaved in church and everyone was respectful, those of you who lived through that time period can correct me if I'm wrong. No, Jesus knew what the total package contained and He used the analogy anyway. At the time I didn't quite know what to make of it, as it is so far from what we usually envision. Even after some time for reflection I still don't quite have a grasp on it but I know God is telling us something through that. Stewardship Reflection: Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints. Most of us are aware that every day of the year is Feast Day for some saints. In fact, and this is of great consequence to our understanding, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia “The Solemnity of All Saints is when the Church honors all saints, known and unknown.” Those who have Feast Days are “known.” Yet, each of us has known “saints” in our lives who fall into the category of “unknown.” It may have been a parent or a sibling or a friend or a co-worker or a neighbor or a member of our parish or merely someone with whom we came in contact at some point in time. The crux is that on this day we need to pray and to honor those saints who have been an important part of our life in some way. Indeed this is a day which should remind us that we, too, are called to sainthood. Not that we aspire to be honored publicly by the Pope or by the Church, but we do need to recognize that each of us is called to holiness. It is those “unknown” saints who provide examples of how to live and love and treat others, how to be good stewards. May we pray for them and may we seek to be like them in our own lives!

Responsorial Psalm:

The Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, besides their mission work, have a publishing house: Orbis Books. Its Director, Robert Ellsberg, in his book, All Saints- Daily Reflections on Saints, Prophets, and Witnesses for Our Time, writes this reflection for November 1, All Saints Day, based on Fr. Karl Rahner SJ 's Theological Investigations: “Since the early centuries of the church the liturgical calendar has reserved one day to honor, collectively, all the saints, both those officially recognized and those known only to God. There are many anonymous saints who, nevertheless, form part of the great “cloud of witnesses” surrounding us, with their faith and courage, and so participating in the communion between the living and the dead. The feast is also an occasion to acknowledge the varieties of holiness. Though they share a certain family resemblance they are not formed in any particular mold. Some were renowned for contemplation and others for action; some played a public role, while others spent their lives in quiet obscurity. Some demonstrated the vitality of the ancient traditions while others were pioneers, charting new possibilities. Some received recognition and honor within their lives, while others were scorned and even persecuted. The feast does not honor a company of “Immortals” far removed from human existence. The saints are not super human beings, but those who realized the vocation for which all human beings were created and to which we are ultimately called. No one is called to be another St. Francis or St. Teresa. But there is a path to holiness that lies within our individual circumstances that engages our own talents and temperaments, that contends with our own strengths and weaknesses, that responds to the needs of our neighbors and our particular moment in history. The feast of All Saints strengthens and encourages us to create that path by walking it.”

Chris and Mary and Lynn and another Maggie and others I’m

sure I’ve missed kept coming forward to help with Martha’s

reception, I couldn’t help but think of the commonalities

between the sacrifices of her and Jesus. I thanked her for

bringing these people out into the open and pulling our Parish

Community together. I was getting a little discouraged

seeking out those who would help with receptions and events.

Martha had more faith than I. Martha pulled us together.

Martha restored my hope. I thanked her about a billion times,

a woman I’ve never even met. Thank you to those who came

forward. And thank you, Martha for bringing us together.

What is the Serra Club about?

The heart of Serra is the support, encouragement and affirmation of vocations to the ministerial priesthood and consecrated religious life. We also assist our members in answering their own personal call to holiness in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. A perfect opportunity to live out our mission is the National Vocation Awareness Week, coming up November 1-7. Serra Club will be hosting the coffee hour on Nov. 1 and will have members available to answer questions as well as materials about Serra and some ideas for ways you can encourage vocations in your family, parish, and community. There will also be a Holy Hour to pray for vocations – please join us Thursday, Nov. 5th, at 5 pm. Questions? Call Vince Griego, 360-201-0258.

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Sacred Heart Church! Sunday, October 18th, 2015 at 11 o’clock mass was

offering the Relic of Saint John Paul II by Father Peter

Szubski from Poland and the Polish Community in

Bellingham and Whatcom County. Father Peter

Szubski was visiting in Sacred Heart

Church last July. We had Polish Mass. I met him again August 26th at Jasna

Gora, Czestochowa, in Poland. He

offered the Relic of Saint John Paul II to

members of Sacred Heart Church,

Bellingham. Me and my son travelled back from Poland to bring the Relic.

The Relic of Saint John Paul II is an

authentic second class Relic from the Vatican. The

Polish nuns in the Vatican dedicated to Father Peter

Szubski a piece of real cloth that was touched by

Saint John Paul II. The families who individually wish to host in their home the Relic of Saint John Paul II

for one week, from Sunday to Sunday, for prayer and

to dedicate their family to the Relic of Saint John Paul

II. I will be available after mass this weekend and next

weekend, so that people can signup.

Thank you very much,

God Bless.

Straight from the Archdiocese…..

“When a church is erected as a building destined solely

and permanently for assembling the people of God and for

carrying out sacred functions, it is fitting that it be dedicat-

ed to God with a solemn rite, in accordance with the an-

cient custom of the church” (Rite of Dedication of a Church

and an Altar, section II, 2)

At 5:00 Wed., Nov. 11, Immaculate Conception Church in

Mount Vernon will have a Ritual Mass for the dedication of

their new Church. Father is hoping to get a caravan, of

sorts, going down there. *Please note they are expecting

full capacity, and suggest arriving early. The mass may last

up to three hours, BUT Father said dedication masses are

awesome, even involving a little fire! :)

Brrrr! It’s getting cold outside…..especially if you have no

home. St. Vincent de Paul is in need of good, used (or not),

sleeping bags. Just bring them to the Parish Offices. Shortly,

with winter approaching, you may just save someone’s life.

If you’re looking to unload something, let me know, and I’ll put it in as Available. Mandy Kohler had the dandy idea. She said, “You might be sitting right next to someone who is in need of something you have.” We must throw in a disclosure, though—Sacred Heart will not be responsible for anything that you give, get, buy or sell. The “list” will simply connecting needs with parishioners.
