God’s Plan for Giving Week of August 9, 2015

The Sanctuary Light will burn In Memory of Dr. Albert K. Detwiller

Requested by Laura DeVenoge

Reflection: August 16, 2015 Have you ever been hungry? Really hungry? P e o p l e w h o h a v e exper ienced intense hunger may appreciate Jesus’ words that He is the “Bread of Life” to a greater extent than others. We are aware that the world is filled with people who hunger and thirst, but most of us have never experienced the true pain of that experience.

While most of us are fortunate enough to avoid the pains of physical hunger, in our modern world and society, spiritual hunger runs rampant.

When the Lord says in today’s Gospel “This is the bread that came down from Heaven… whoever eats this bread will live forever,” He is addressing a need we have that is much deeper than physical hunger. He is also telling us that the reward for eating this bread — for taking it into our inner being, for changing our mind and heart because of it — is eternal life. Blessed Mother Teresa said, “The hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread.” This is the hunger we need to deal with in our faith lives, for when we love, we are beginning to satisfy that spiritual hunger to which the Lord refers.

Question of the Week:

Am I living not on the earthly bread of materialism but on the spiritual bread—of every word that comes forth from the mouth of God‘?

Overcome Indifference and win Peace will be the title of the Message for the 49th World Day of Peace, the third of the papacy of Pope Francis. Indifference in regard to the scourges of our time is one of the fundamental causes of the lack of peace. Today, indifference is often linked to various forms of individualism which cause isolation, ignorance, selfishness and, therefore, lack of interest and commitment. Increase of information does not mean per se an increase of attention to the problems, if it is not accompanied by solidarity-based openness of conscience. To this end, it is essential the contribution that can provide–besides the family–educators, teachers, people of culture, media practitioners, intellectuals and artists. Indifference can be won only responding together to this challenge.

Peace is to be worked at: it is not something that one gains without efforts, without conversion of mind and heart, without a sense of creativity and positive engagement in discussion. Such an action must urgently have recourse to build a sense of responsibility and awareness creation about the serious problems and challenges afflicting our time, such as, fundamentalism, intolerance and massacres, persecutions on account of faith and ethnicity, disregard for freedom and the destruction of the rights of entire peoples, the exploitation of human beings submitted even to the different forms of slavery, corruption and organized crime, war and the plight of refugees and forcibly displaced persons. Such training and awareness creation should seek, at the same time, also opportunities and possibilities to fight these evils: the creation of a culture of law, education in dialogue and co-operation are, in this context, the fundamental forms of a constructive response.

The field for daily peace-building, overcoming indifference, is located in different forms of slavery of nowadays’ world, on which was dedicated The Message for the 1st January 2015: No longer slaves, but brothers and sisters. We should continue this commitment with heightened conscience and cooperation.

Peace is possible where the rights of every human being are recognized and respected, heard and known, according to freedom and justice. The Message for 2016 aims to be a starting point for all people of good will, particularly those who work in the education, media, culture, each one acting according to their possibilities and according to their best aspirations to build together a more conscious and merciful, and, therefore, more free and fair world.

The World Day of Peace initiated by Paul VI, is celebrated each year on the first day of January. The Holy Father's Message is sent to all Foreign Ministers of the world, and also indicates the Holy See’s diplomatic line during the coming year.

News from Pope Francis St. Pius X, (1835-1914)

Feast Day, August 21

The second of 10 children in a poor Italian family, Joseph Sarto became Pius X at 68, one of the 20th century’s greatest popes. Ever mindful of his humble origin, he stated, “I was born poor, I lived poor, I will die poor.” He was embarrassed by some of the pomp of the papal court. “Look how they have dressed me up,” he said in tears to an old friend. To another, “It is a penance to be forced to accept all these practices. They lead me around surrounded by soldiers like Jesus when he was seized in Gethsemani.”

Interested in politics, he encouraged Italian Catholics to become more politically involved. One of his first papal acts was to end the supposed right of governments to interfere by veto in papal elections—a practice that reduced the freedom of the 1903 conclave which had elected him.

In 1905, when France renounced its agreement with the Holy See and threatened confiscation of Church property if governmental control of Church affairs were not granted, Pius X courageously rejected the demand.

While he did not author a famous social encyclical as his predecessor had done, he denounced the ill treatment of indigenous peoples on the plantations of Peru, sent a relief commission to Messina after an earthquake and sheltered refugees at his own expense.

On the 11th anniversary of his election as pope, Europe was plunged into World War I. Pius had foreseen it, but it killed him. “This is the last affliction the Lord will visit on me. I would gladly give my life to save my poor children from this ghastly scourge.” He died a few weeks after the war began and was canonized in 1954.

Saint of the Week

What is a Religious Sister?

A woman religious is a member of a religious congregation who shares in a particular apostolate. After a period of promising simple vows, the sister makes perpetual simple vows for life. These vows are poverty, chastity and obedience. Most of the institutes whose members are called Sisters were established since the nineteenth century. Congregations of sisters typically live and are active in the world. They serve in a variety of active ministries reaching out into the world to assist the Church in a variety of areas: health, schools, parishes, etc.

Fr. Jerome Requests Rosaries

for Cuban Mission O.L.P.H. Junior Legion of Mary has been busy fulfilling Fr. Jerome's request last week for 300 Rosaries which Fr. Oscar Rojas, CSsR will take to his Mission Church in Havanna, Cuba. Our excellent team of legionaries worked hard and even took kits home to help reach our goal with the limited timeline. We are very thankful to the Greer Family who saw Fr. Jerome's email and surprised us with 75 of these last Wednesday to honor Delia Greer who is a 96year old resident at Oceanview Nursing Home. Also special thanks to Janice Mc Guire who miraculously had almost 200 rosary kits prepped and ready for us to make rosaries. Our Legion plans to restart the Legion of Mary in Cuba and sending them Tessera's and handbooks in Spanish. Please contact me if you have family or friends in Cuba and interested in joining us for this Mission. Fr. Tom's made time to join us a Junior Curia meeting for the Legion of Mary here at Sacred Heart where he asked us to pray for the William's family in S.C. He blessed the Rosaries going to Cuba via Fr. Jerome and shared that he had spoken with Fr. Jerome and was happy we could participate with this Mission on short notice.

Remember School is back in session— please drive carefully.

Our Mission The mission of Sacred Heart Catholic School is to integrate

Catholic faith and values with learning and life,

treating each student as a unique child of God

in a safe, supportive, and challenging academic environment.

What Sets Us Apart At Sacred Heart we believe that….

= Every human life, created in God’s image, is worthy of respect and dignity.

= Catholic education is an essential part of the Church’s mission to proclaim the gospel

message of Jesus, to build faith communities, to celebrate through worship and to serve

others without distinction.

= The Gospel values of our faith are an integral part of our daily life as Catholic Christians.

= A learning environment that promotes academic excellence empowers students to grow

toward their God-given potential.

= Sacred Heart Catholic School is the shared responsibility of the pastor, principal, teachers

and staff, students parents, parish and community members. As responsible citizens, our students have the potential to transform the world.

God’s Plan for Giving Week of August 9, 2015

"THERE'S ALWAYS TIME TO BE A KNIGHT" "The standard catch-all answer from prospective members is, "I don't have enough time." I try to help them realize that just being a member is valuable. We're all at different stages in our lives, and everyone has their own niche, their own comfort level. If you can set aside time to do one thing a year, that's no less important than the person who is involved day in and day out. You give what you can give." Kenneth A. McCoy, Council #16027 This quote appeared in the July 2015 issue of Columbia magazine and is reprinted with permission of the Knights of Columbus, New Haven, Conn.
