Sacred Heart Catholic Church Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ July 21, 2019
Reflection from the Stewardship Office:
I would like to use these pastor “Reflections” for three purposes:
1. Any announcements
2. Update you on any news concerning parish life
3. Use as catechetical teaching
However, I would like to hear from you all what you would like to read in these
reflections. Let me know [email protected]
50th Anniversary – Impossible to Possible On this date 50 years ago, Apollo 11 made history by walking on the
moon. One cannot put into words what this event meant to mankind. However, I’d
like to offer a thought about how it connects to Christianity.
Growing up, most young boys and girls have dreams about what they want to
do with their life. I grew up wanting to be a police officer, but I had friends that
wanted to do other things. One of my buddies wanted to be a race driver, another a
doctor, another wanted to be a vet, and one wanted to fly airplanes. On July 19, 1969,
many boys and girls had similar dreams. On July 20, 1969, every boy and girl wanted
to be an astronaut and go to the moon or further. Before the Apollo landing, to walk
on the moon must have seemed an impossible dream, but that event made the
impossible possible. It was as if the dream became within reach because someone had
done it. “A man has walked on the moon so can I.”
My connection: Before Jesus people had dreams of becoming great prophets
like Elijah or great warriors like Samson or great priests like Samuel or great kings
like David. After Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into Heaven, mankind had a
new dream. Because Jesus is fully divine and fully human, that dream was now
within reach. “A human has reached Heaven so can I.” The impossible was now possible!
