Epiphany of The Lord
The traditional date for Epiphany is January 6th. This year, it has
been transferred to Sunday, January 4th. The Feast celebrates the
manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles, as symbolized by the Magi.
The Feast is also the end of the Christmas season.
The story of the Magi’s visit to the Christ Child is told only in the
Gospel of Matthew...the other Gospels omit it. The word “Magi”
itself comes from a Greek word “magoi,” meaning “sage.” These
particular Magi were likely from the Empire of Persia, which was to
the west of Judea. And probably they were astrologers. Their
nightly study of the heavens had located the unusual star, and they
realized that something significant was taking place, so they fol-
lowed it west to Bethlehem. They also realized that the star por-
tended the birth of a king, so they brought with them gifts of gold
(for kingship), frankincense (for priesthood), and myrrh ( for burial).
The celebration of Epiphany dates to the 3rd Century and the
Christians who celebrate it are Catholics, Orthodox, Anglicans,
Lutherans, and Methodists. Many denominations, however, do not!
We, as Catholics, are fortunate to have this wonderful feast in our
tradition!
