Special Presentation—Save the Date

Dr. Nick Lebish Thu Sep 26 6:30pm Marian Hall All are invited to a special presentation as our parish begins this journey through the 10 Commandments this year. Dr. Lebish, Director of the Denver Biblical and Catechetical Schools, will present The Old Testament, the New Testament and the New Exodus, an enlightening look at where we were, where we are and what do we do now.

Child care available by reservation by contacting Sammy at [email protected].

New Parish Theme for 2019/2020: The Ten Commandments

Pilgrims on a Journey We are pilgrims on a journey from our temporary home on earth to our real home with God in heaven. There are many examples in our Christian history of a people on the move: Adam and Eve being cast out of the Garden of Eden; the Isra-elites fleeing Egypt for the promised land; the Holy Family travelling from Bethlehem to Egypt to Nazareth.

Our Journey Begins Next week, we will begin our own journey as we move from our familiar home in the current sanctuary to one that is differ-ent, unfamiliar and that presents a few challenges. But, like the Israelites being led to the promised land, this journey too has the promise of great reward at the end: a renewed Sanctuary allowing us to celebrate the Sacraments as a family with great-er reverence.

Weekly Sunday Reflections Following Mass While the Israelites wandered in the dessert, they received a great gift from God—the Ten Commandments. And so this year, during our period of construction, we too will focus on this great gift, this “blueprint” from God our Creator. Because we are wandering pilgrims, the way in which we will explore our theme will be very different! For 15 minutes after each and every Mass - every weekend - you are invited to listen as one of our priests breaks open the Commandments, so that we can look in depth at how they are the foundation of our life in Christ.

Pray for Vocations On Friday, August 23rd, Gabe Inerst, Mark Lederhos, Stephen Suddjian and Calvin Farrell travelled to Spain to begin a year of discernment with the Disciples of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. They will live in the Disciples House of Formation in Madrid, studying Spanish, getting to know the community and growing in their knowledge of God and His will for their lives.

Please continue to pray for Joe Paolucci who also returned to Spain to enter the reli-gious community and begin his time of novitiate. And continue to pray for Brothers Erik and Riley, that they may grow in humility and love of Christ.

All of these young men begin this month, walking as pilgrims, backpacking through the mountains of southern Spain to the sanctuary of Our Lady of Peña de Francia. Pray for a safe and fruitful pilgrimage for them.

The Vision of Man Fully Alive Men’s Catechesis Fridays 6:00am Beginning September 6th

That Man is You!, the St Mary Parish men’s catechesis pro-gram, is inviting all men to attend our next program starting Friday September 6th, The Vision of Man Fully Alive, pro-duced by Paradisus Dei. The Vision of Man Fully Alive ena-bles men to experience authentic freedom as sons of God. Through living the three-fold mission of abiding presence, joyful service and loving sacrifice, their hearts and homes will experience the joy that God desires. To sustain them on their spiritual journey, the men will be led directly to the three spir-itual foods that Christ himself proclaims: The Eucharist, The Word of God, and The Will of God.

The format of the program is a 30 minute video presentation by one of 9 speakers followed by discussion in a small group setting. The series consists of 13 weeks starting Friday Sep-tember 6th. All meetings are on Fridays starting at 6:00 AM with breakfast available starting at 5:30 AM.

For more information please contact the TMIY Core Team Leader, Todd Hattenbach 720.256.5941 or [email protected]

Learning Latin Chant You have noticed over recent weeks that we have been intro-ducing Latin chants for the assembly’s parts of the Mass. You may be wondering why, and if St. Mary is making some changes in its worship style. Recognizing the value for a parish to know how to sing and understand the beautiful Latin Mass Ordinary, we are taking some time now to learn them. After that we will return to English, using the Latin chant at selected occasions to elevate the celebrations of our most special Feasts and Solemnities.

Why Chant? Chant is the one music that we inherit from the ancient Church fathers. It is not a “style” but the music of the Mass itself. It is sung in unison, which makes it a perfect expression of unity. It illuminates and gives expressiveness to the sacred texts, but it does not alter them. It musically expresses the heart of the Church and thus exists across and outside time. From her ear-liest days, the Roman Church has clothed her worship with Gregorian chant. Through the centuries she has safeguarded the chant as her own unique form of music. For these reasons, Gregorian chant is the “supreme model for sacred mu-sic” (Pope Pius X) and the music proper to the Roman Church.

Why Latin? When the Church speaks of Gregorian chant, she means Latin chant. Latin is especially preferred because it is the universal language of the Church. It is the language in which the chant was composed, and the chant melodies are constructed around the accentuation, phrasing, and articulation of the Latin text.

Didn’t Vatican II do away with Latin? This is what Vatican II says: “In Masses which are celebrated with the people, a suitable place may be allotted to their moth-er tongue. This is to apply in the first place to the readings and "the common prayer," but also, as local conditions may war-rant, to those parts which pertain to the people. . . . Neverthe-less steps should be taken so that the faithful may also be able to say or to sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass [Kyrie, Gloria, Creed, Sanctus, Memorial Accla-mation, Our Father, Lamb of God, etc.] which pertain to them” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, no. 54).

How can we participate fully? Our faith calls us to be life-long learners. We practice to be-come better at prayer, we ponder the great mysteries of Catho-lic faith every time we pray the Rosary or recite the Creed. Likewise, we should work to understand the Latin. We’ll be printing resources in the bulletin to help with this.
