The “Gary J. Colberg” Lifetime Achievement Award
The Northern California Collegiate Volleyball League (NCCVL) announces the introduction of The “Gary J. Colberg” Lifetime Achievement Award. This award is dedicated to its first recipient, Gary J. Colberg, for his tireless dedica-tion and insatiable passion for our sport. For without his vision and dedica-tion, collegiate club volleyball programs would surely not be as large or organ-ized as it is today. Gary founded the UC Davis men’s volleyball program in 1967 as an associate athletic director of intramural sports and sports club at UC Davis. He continued on to create and coach the Sacramento State Men’s program in 1980. Founder and former commissioner of the NCCVL, Gary cre-ated opportunities for students to compete at collegiate level otherwise not available to them. His philosophy was always to be inclusive, provide opportu-nities, and to celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of the players and teams. A philosophy the league still holds today. Gary organized the first col-legiate club national championships, consisting of only 4 teams. Today, 360 teams participate in 9 different divisions for men and women. Gary’s contri-bution to sports extend beyond volleyball. At the time of his retirement from UC Davis in 2006, he had built up the intramural program he started to 57 dif-ferent men’s, women’s, and co-ed intramural team sports that involved more than 15,000 students a year. It is clear the impact Gary has had on countless athletes that has come through his many programs and the impact on the countless athletes that will surely come after. We are honored to celebrate the many great contributions Gary Colberg has made by dedicating his life-work to the endeavors of others.
