Fugro provides integrated consultancy, data acquisition and construction support that enables in-
formed decisions to be made on the optimum location and design of onshore wind farms.
Sabloal Valea Dacilor Wind Farm
Project: Sabloal Valea Dacilor Wind Farm Location: Valea Dacilor, near Constanta Romania Client: ARCADIS Consult GmbH / RWE
The Sabloal Wind Farm is currently planned to be one of
the largest on-shore wind farms in South-East Europe.
A total number of 105 wind turbines will deliver more
than 200 MW power. Spanning over an area of about 20
x 10 km with very favorable wind conditions but also
challenging geological conditions, the project is a tech-
nical and logistical assignment.
Purpose
FUGRO was asked by ARCADIS, consultant to RWE and
responsible for the overall geotechnical site investigation and
foundation recommendations, to assist with technical sup-
port including Cone Penetration Testing and In-situ Testing.
This is relevant for the design of the wind turbine foundations
and associated infrastructure.
The dimensions and heights of the turbines have grown over
the past years. Consequently, the requirements for soil in-
vestigations have changed. This includes the requirement
for investigations to greater depths as well as in-situ determi-
nation of dynamic soil properties (P & S – wave velocity, G
and E – modulus, Poisson ratio). In Romania, this is even
more important due to the known seismic activities in the
region.
Besides the proposed 105 wind turbines, the subsoil condi-
tions for the associated infrastructure including over 150 km
of roads, more than 300 km cables routes, 13 bridges and
substations had to be investigated.

Realization
Starting with a basic investigation program with 3 CPT’s at
each footing of the proposed 105 wind turbine locations the
scope further increased during execution of the works. The
drilling performed by another contractor could not keep up
with FUGRO’s program and CPT’s were added to feed the
design needs running in parallel.
At peak times, FUGRO was on site with two CPT rigs work-
ing in parallel, accomplishing up to 18 CPT’s per day. Due
to the begin of winter season, drilling work had to be stopped
several times. Fugro on the other side was able to continue
with the testing program using our track mounted CPT
equipment. The entire field work campaign and the related
documentation was executed in only four weeks.
Completing the project in January 2010, FUGRO again
proved to be a strong and reliable partner in the field of soil
investigation and in-situ testing in challenging environments
and with tight time schedules .
