Verse 267-268 - TranslationO you who have believed, spend from the good things

which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth. And do not

aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes. And know that Allah is Free of

need and Praiseworthy.

Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality, while Allah promises you forgiveness

from Him and bounty. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

What to spend… Allah commands to spend in charity:

1) from the pure, honest money that they earned and2) from the fruits and vegetables that He has grown for them in the land

Allah is far Richer than you, He is in no need of this money, so do not give, for His sake, what you would dislike for yourselves.

Do not spend from the dishonest, impure money.

Ayah 267...continued. Ayah 267 was revealed about the Ansar. The story

about the dates. “while you would not take it [yourself] except with

closed eyes” meaning: If you had a right on someone who would pay you less than what you gave them, you would not agree until you require more from them to make up the difference.

"Although Allah commanded to give the purest of money in charity, He is far Richer from needing our charity.

The purpose is that the distance between poor and rich become less.

Shaytan gives doubt about spending in charity… Hadith: Shaytan has an effect on the son of

Adam, and the angel also has an effect. “Satan threatens you with poverty” meaning:

that you hold on to whatever you have and refrain from spending it in Allah's pleasure.

Shaytan forbids you from spending in charity because of the false fear of becoming poor, and he encourages evil deeds, sins, indulging in what is prohibited, and immoral conduct.

The meaning of Al-Hikmah… Al-Hikmah: That is the knowledge of

Quran, what is plain and clear and what is not as plain and clear, what it allows, and what it does not allow, and its parables.

“Those of understanding”: Those who will benefit from the advice are those who have sound minds and good comprehension with which they understand the words (of advice and reminder) and their implications.

Verse 270-271 - Translation

And whatever you spend of expenditures or make of vows - indeed, Allah knows of it.

And for the wrongdoers there are no helpers.

If you disclose your charitable expenditures, they are good; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you, and He will remove from you some of your misdeeds [thereby]. And Allah , with what

you do, is [fully] Acquainted.

Page 12: Sabeel ul Huda Lesson 36 Surah Al-Baqarah: 267-274 nurulquran.com1

12

To conceal the charity… Allah states that He has perfect

knowledge of the good deeds performed by all of His creation.

“but if you conceal them…” - this indicates that concealing charity is better than disclosing it, because it protects one from showing off and boasting.

You will gain goodness by your rank being raised, and your sins being forgiven.

Not upon you, [O Muhammad], is [responsibility for] their guidance, but Allah guides whom He wills. And

whatever good you [believers] spend is for yourselves, and you do not spend except seeking the countenance of Allah . And whatever you spend of good - it will be

fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.

The intention of charity… Whenever the believer spends, including

what he spends on himself, he seeks Allah's Face with it.

You give away charity for the sake of Allah. Therefore, you will not be asked about the deeds (or wickedness) of those who recieve it.

You will be rewarded by your intention. Hadith: A man gave charity to an adultress,

a wealthy man and a thief.

Verse 273-274 - Translation

[Charity is] for the poor who have been restricted for the cause of Allah , unable to move about in the land. An ignorant [person] would think them self-sufficient because of their restraint, but you will

know them by their [characteristic] sign. They do not ask people persistently [or at all]. And whatever you spend of good - indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.

Those who spend their wealth [in Allah 's way] by night and by day, secretly and publicly - they will have their reward with their Lord. And no fear will

there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.

Who deserves charity & Praise for those who spend in charity… “[Charity is] for the poor who have been

restricted for the cause of Allah , unable to move about in the land.” meaning: the migrants who migrated to Allah and His Messenger, resided in Al-Madinah and did not have resources that sufficiently provided them with their needs,

Ayah 274 praises those who spend in charity for Allah's sake, seeking His pleasure, day and night, publicly and in secret, including what one spends on his family.
