SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR

CHANUKAH GIFTS

There is no more appropriate giftfor Chanukah than a book or a mag¬azine subscription. It satisfies the ob¬ligation of the season while reinforc¬ing the primacy of the spiritual overthe material which is the essential mes¬sage of the festival. "Not by strengthor by might but by my spirit, saiththe Lord", is the Biblical slogan forChanukah.

In keeping with this thought, hereare some suggestions for your maga¬zine gift giving.

Judaism—a somewhat more esotericjournal dealing with matters of intel¬lectual concern to the Jew and hiscommunity. Published quarterly by theAmerican Jewish Congress, 15 East84th St. New York, N.Y. 10028. Sub¬scription price: $6.00 ($4.00 for stu¬dents).

Commentary — the Jewish commu¬

nity's version of Harper's or the At¬lantic. Recently, the magazine hasplaced greater emphasis on mattersof Jewish concern without sacrificingits broader appeal. Published monthlyby the American Jewish Committee,165 East 56th St., New York, N.Y.10022. Subscription price: $9.00.The Jerusalem Post — a special

weekly edition of articles is air mailedon Monday from Jerusalem, arrivingon Tuesday. An excellent source fornews, reviews and the atmosphere ofIsraeli life. Annual subscription:$18.00. Write to the Jerusalem PostWeekly, 10 E. 44 St., N.Y.C. 10017.

THE GOVERNMENT HELPS YOU GIVE CHARITYAmerica is one of the few govern¬

ments in the world that encouragesthe giving of private charity by allow¬ing the donor to take a tax deductionfor his gifts.

It is good to bear this thought inmind now during the weeks as theoutgoing calendar year is coming to aclose. There are many business menwho may realize that they are still ina position to make gifts to worthycauses. It would be extremely wise forthem to take advantage of that.

There are, of course, many causesthat deserve generosity. There is theUnited Jewish Appeal which today isthe supreme cause in Jewish life. There is Yeshiva University, the fore¬most institution of higher learning inAmerica. There, of course, is the Bar-

Ilan University in Israel, an academicinstitution that is religiously oriented.Immediately, at home, there is, the

Synagogue itself. There may be somewho have not yet made their contri¬bution to the Annual Synagogue Ap¬peal. Now they have such an oppor¬tunity. Ramaz School deserves thekindness and attention of generousdonors. We mention but a few causes

but we do not discourage giving toany other deserving cause.

This is a thought for the months ofNovember and December, as the yearcomes to a close. Remember that theinstitutions and causes to which youwill give will give you their blessing. The government will give you sanc¬tion and approval, and God will re¬ward you.

"Halakha In The Moon Age"The Subject of Dr. Rosenfeld's lecture

The third lecture in the series spon¬sored by the Kehilath Jeshurun AdultInstitute promises to be unlike anyever offered under similar auspices. Both the subject and the speaker aresui generis.Among the kinds of questions to

be discussed by Dr. Rosenfeld will bethe following: How does one observethe sabbath in space? What are someof the religious problems involvedin brain transplants? What is theHalakhik position on refrigeration andresuscitation of the critically ill? Whatmight be the religious status of robots? These questions can only be discussed— whether seriously or with tonguein cheek — by a man who is wellversed in the scientific and mathemati¬cal disciplines as well as the study ofTorah in all its aspects. Such a com¬bination is rare, even in our day. Per¬haps the most supreme example ofthis combination in our generation isour guest lecturer, Dr. Azriel Rosen¬feld.

The holder of a Bachelor's Degreefrom Yeshiva College, three masterDegrees in mathematics and Hebrewliterature, a Doctorate of HebrewLetters in rabbinic literature fromYeshiva University and a Ph.D. inmathematics from Columbia, Dr.Rosenfeld qualifies as an expert onscientific subjects and on halakhicstudies.

He is the author of three books andsome forty papers. At present, he hasfour articles awaiting publication invarious scientific journals and a learn¬ed analysis of "Fragments of the Com¬mentary of Nahmanides' student onthe Tractates of Yomah and Sukkah"(in Hebrew) which is to be publishedin the Rabbi Samuel K. Mirsky Mem¬orial Volume.

Dr. Rosenfeld makes his home in

the Washington, D.C. area. His bril¬liant career actually has its roots inthis community. In June of 1943 hewas in the first graduating class (to¬gether with four other students) fromthe Ramaz Elementary School.

We extend a special invitation to thereaders of this Bulletin to come to

listen to a fascinating personality dis¬cuss a most intriguing subject.
