For Albert Balcells, the sky really isthe limit. As the Director of theSkyrunner World Series, Albert

travels the world to organize and witness various mountain races orsports at high altitude which make upthe Skyrunner World Series. Mt.Kinabalu is proud to be part of this prestigious world series and one of onlytwo Asian countries to hold the honour. The other is Mt. Ontake in Otaki, Japan.Runners gather points by competing in various mountain races inthe 7-series circuit, culminating inZegama, Spain this year.

This year, the TM 21st Mt. KinabaluInternational Climbathon took place onAugust 25 and 26, setting the stage fortop world mountain runners to

challenge each other in what isdubbed the World’s ToughestMountain Race. Top runners suchas Spain’s Agusti Roc Amadorand Italy’s Dapit Fulvio are amongthe famous faces who participateeach year without fail, bringing a competitive edge to the race. With each visit, Albert neverceases to be amazed with thegrandeur of Mt. Kinabalu. “MountKinabalu is the highest mountainin the race circuit at the momentat 4,095.2 metres. The othersaverage 3,500 metres or so.Also, unlike the other race courses which are gravel-based,the granite course here offers adifferent kind of challenge, soyou need a different technique,”

he said. When asked if theEuropean runners had an addedadvantage because of theirphysique, Albert begged to differ.“Technically, many people thinkjust because the Europeans mighthave longer legs and are taller itmeans they are better athletes. Ithink the more important thing hereis technique and skill. For example, the European runners might reachthe peak faster but Malaysian runners are much faster going down. This is because they have the home advantage and are familiar with theterrain. So again, it’s not always aboutthe physique,” said Albert, who hailsfrom Spain. “You should remember

that a smaller physique is sometimes agood thing as it makes it easier for therunner to carry their own weight – Lookat Ricardo Mejia (2006 Mt. KinabaluInternational Men’s Open Champion)!”Albert added that he was impressedwith the performance of local runnersconsidering that they were up againstprofessional mountain runners. “TheEuropean runners have more exposureand many of them are professionalathletes, which mean they can train all

year round. However, for your local runners, they only have time to traincloser to the event and yet they performas well as, if not better than, the world-class runners. This proves that theyhave the potential given the right training and exposure,” he commented. His advice for budding mountain runners? “You must be in the game formany years, which means start asyoung as possible. You must have thedrive and motivation to succeed.Exposure and proper training are alsovital,” he said.

The Sabah runners were not theonly thing that impressed Albert. Headmits he is smitten by Sabah’s charm.“Every year, Sabah is the one leg in thecircuit that I always look forward to!Although I’m at work, it’s also like a holiday for me,” he said, adding that heloves meeting people and learning newcultures. During his time here, he hasexplored Sabah’s many tropical islandsand he admits he is particularly fond ofthe lush green rainforests. “It’s verybeautiful here. Sabah is like anotherhome for me. I love coming back here, the people are very friendly and it’sgood to see they are passionate aboutthis kind of sport,” he said. Albert wasalso a professional athlete but an injuryforced him into early retirement. “I lovethe industry. so now instead of participating, I am on the other side, organizing events for athletes,” heexplained. He stressed the importanceof the media bringing light to sportingevents such as the annual Climbathonin order to generate an interest, especially among the younger generation. “I look forward to comingback, definitely,” concluded theSpaniard with a smile.

Your body is blissfully kneaded, your sore feet tenderlyrubbed and even your nails are manicured to perfection. But how often do you de-stress your hair? Believe or not,

your hair has special needs, but more often than not we think aquick wash and trim are all we need. Not quite the case according to the experts at Patrick Saloon. I had the opportunity to experience the SEAH Hair Spa package, designed to give your hair the attention it deserves.

Before the session starts, your hair condition is determinedto identify the ideal range of products to be used. SEAH HairSpa caters to four types of hair: demoisturised (normal to dryhair), coloured (colour-treated and highlighted hair),sophisticated (delicate, dry and matured hair) and stressed(damaged, formed and bleached hair). It turned out my hair wasdefinitely ‘stressed out’ so it was time to give it some TLC! TheHair Spa experience begins with a hair wash with the ExpertMassage shampoo. This is no regular hair wash. My shampoospecialist (as I like to call her) used special massaging techniques, gently rubbing and kneading certain points on myscalp, slowly moving to the nape of my neck. Simply blissful! After some 20 minutes, the suds were rinsed off and a conditioner applied. To create a healthy shine, purify andregenerate the hair, a cream mask was applied all over andthoroughly rubbed in. The hair was then wrapped in a towel andleft for 15 minutes. While waiting, I enjoyed a relaxing shoulder, neck and back rub. Don’t be shy to speak up and let them knowif they are applying the right pressure – the friendly masseusewill be more than happy to oblige. At the sound of the buzzer, itwas time to rinse off the mask. My hair was then gently toweldried and blow-dried to perfection. I’m truly impressed: Not onlydoes my hair feel significantly softer and lighter, it smellsabsolutely wonderful. I was told this was one of the signaturefeatures of the SEAH Hair Spa, a lovely lingering scent. Thewhole package lasts for approximately an hour and a half. Sothe next time you feel tired, stressed and in need of some pampering, a relaxing Hair Spa experience

International DelightsWhether it’s a creamy plate of pasta or a serving of sushi, chancesare you’ll find them all in Sabah. There are plenty of Italian restaurants in town and Little Italy (088-232231) located at theground floor of Hotel Capital and across from Wisma Merdeka, isa good place to start. Also in town are the classy Luna Rossa(088-266882, beside Bulatan Perdana along Jalan Sulaman),Bella Italia (088-313366) at Jesselton Hotel) and Grazie (019-5315246, Wawasan Plaza). Japanese restaurants are alsoaplenty including Kawana (088-252748) along the Waterfront andKK’s oldest Japanese eatery Nishiki (088-230582, Jalan Gaya, just a stone’s throw from the Sabah Tourism Board informationcentre). For fusion fare, why not visit Toscani’s (088-242879,Waterfront) which serves an array of tapas and seafood. Want adining experience like no other? Then make your way to @mosphere (088-425100/111). The restaurant is located on the18th floor of Menara Tun Mustapha and is the only revolvingrestaurant in Sabah that offers a breathtaking 360 degree view ofthe city.

Only in Sabah!Every place has its unique delicacy and Sabah is no exception. Many restaurants and coffee shops proudly incorporate local foodin their menu, but the best place to sample and purchase authentic Sabah delights is at the local ‘tamu’ (open market).Among the delicacies to look out for is the bambangan, a sourmango-like fruit preserved in a jar which is eaten to complementalmost any dish. For the more adventurous, try the nonsoom (preserved pickled fish in a jar) – definitely an acquired taste!Hinava is a popular Kadazandusun favourite – a delicious mix offresh fish, red chillies, shredded ginger, sliced shallots and plentyof lime which ‘cooks’ the fish. To make your culinary adventurecomplete, have a sip of lihing (rice wine), always served at socialgatherings as a beverage of choice, or used to add a distinctiveflavour to chicken soup. But if it’s really fresh food you want, itdoesn’t get any fresher than a plate of live sago worms, or butodas the locals call them. Delicious!

by Melissa LeongIn the spirit of doing what the Romans do when in Rome, one must eat like a true-blue Sabahan when in Sabah. We have everything to satisfy even the fussiest of palates. Your gastronomic affair begins right here!

After a month of fasting and abstinence during Ramadhan, theMuslim community celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri in the month

of Syawal. Bulan Puasa (or Fasting Month) is the perfect time tocatch a glimpse of Malay cakes and desserts in their glory. Foodstalls are opened every evening (a few hours before ‘buka puasa’or the breaking of fast is observed) in various locations, serving avariety of goodies from nasi lemak to fried chicken. However, it isthe traditional cakes and desserts that sell like hot cakes (pardonthe pun). Hari Raya is also a wonderful time to savour some of thebest kuih muih.

The serimuka is a two-tiered cake, usually sold in bite-sizepieces. The lower layer is steamed glutinous rice and the upperlayer is made of custard, usually coloured green. The mixture ofsweet and savoury flavours makes this truly unique. Also popularis the pulut panggang. A mixture of sambal and shrimp is stuffed

into a roll of glutinous rice, wrapped in banana leaves and thenroasted. Simply delicious!

You might also come across a type of cake called wajit, whichis also steamed glutinous rice wrapped in banana leaves. However, gula melaka or palm sugar is added, which gives thewajit its brown colour and sweetness. On a hot day, cendol is justwhat you need. The mixture of coconut milk and gula melakatogether with green jelly known as cendol makes a perfectdrink/dessert.

However, perhaps the most popular favourite is the pisanggoreng or banana fritters. Sliced bananas are dipped into batterand deep fried until they turn golden yellow. The crispy yet tendertexture makes this dish Malaysian favourite at tea-time. Some eatthem plain while others like to dip the fritters in sambal or evenchilli sauce.
