MINISTER OF HEALTH RULES OUT PHARMACEUTICAL DRUG PRICE INCREASES
Source: Al Borsa, July 14, 2014 The Ministry of Health has ruled out price increases for pharmaceutical drugs to reflect energy cost hikes, as Minister Adel El Adawy said. For EIPICO, we do not expect a significant impact from higher energy prices. However, the company may witness some softening in margins as it runs its own distribution fleet; hence, we expect to see some increase in transportation costs. We have highlighted previously that EIPICO’s inflexibility in raising prices, as pricing is set and regulated by the government, will cap the company's ability to pass on price increases, a risk that it might face if the impact came more severe than our initial thoughts, in our view.

Source: Al Borsa, July 8, 2014
Egypt’s Ministry of Supply will fix prices for 30 foodstuff goods and has reached an agreement with top grocery retailer Carrefour (link here) to set prices in a move to curb inflation. The items to be price-controlled will be announced over the next few days and are expected to see fixed prices through 2015, according to an article in Al Borsa newspaper. The article noted that “essential goods” will see such price controls including poultry, meat and beans. Carrefour has refused raising prices as requested by some suppliers, the article added.

FOREIGN RESERVES DOWN USD596 MILLION IN JUNE
Source: Ahram Online, July 8, 2014 Egypt’s Net International Reserves fell for the second time this year in June, declining USD596 million to USD16.7 billion, data released by the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) (link here) showed. We estimate import coverage dropped slightly to 3.4 months from 3.6 months in May. The reasons behind the decline remain unknown amidst the absence of any publicly known commitment (whether debt payments or foreign exchange auctions), as well as stable value of gold reserves. Saudi Arabia’s monthly oil supplies worth USD600 million are due to expire August, and should have prevented such a steep decline in reserves. In parallel, CBE Governor Hisham Ramez said Egypt paid USD700 million of its debt to the Paris Club (link here), leading to expectations of another decline in reserves in July barring any new aid inflows. EGYPT PLANS TAX ON WATER-INTENSIVE CROPS Source: Bloomberg, July 8, 2014 Legislation for new tax on crops that are water intensive will be introduced by end of this year, Agriculture Minister Adel El-Beltagy said. The proposal aims to improve productivity and water efficiency. The article added that there were also plans to reclaim 1.038 million acres of land before end of 2017 to boost domestic food output. Egypt is currently working on being self-sufficient in wheat cultivation, with plans to reach 75% self-sufficiency in wheat by 2018, 78% in corn and 82% in sugar.

GERMAN TOUR OPERATORS RESUME TRIPS TO SHARM EL-SHEIKH Source: Reuters, July 13, 2014 German tour operators said holiday makers may once again book trips to Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh after the German foreign office had eased travel advice for the destination. TUI Germany, part of Europe's largest tour operator, TUI Travel, said customers would be able to book trips from 21 July. The smaller tour operator FTI also said it was offering holidays to the beach resort. The German foreign office had advised against travel throughout the Sinai Peninsula back in February. This week, Germany changed its advice and now warns only against travel to the north of the peninsula. It advises avoiding the Nile delta and valley and recommends holiday makers exercise care when travelling to Egypt, even to Red Sea resorts.

Source: Al Mal, July 14, 2014 Abraaj Investment Management (link here) has made an approach to buy at
least a 51% stake in Egypt's snack maker Bisco Misr (link here), Bisco Misr said in a statement. Abraaj Investment Management will undertake due diligence over the coming two months, according to Marian Ghaly, Board Member of Bisco Misr. She added that 60% of shareholders have agreed to preliminary deal terms including the future strategy, deal timeline, an initial valuation (that exceeds current market value) and prospects for a future tender offer. Dubai-based Abraaj Capital, the Middle East's largest private equity firm, has been pushing to expand in emerging markets. Last year, Juhayna Food Industries (AmCham Member) (link here), Halwani Brothers (link here) (6001.SE) and Kraft Foods (AmCham Member) made bids to acquire Bisco Misr. Bisco Misr posted revenues of EGP124.9 million in 1Q2014 (+9% Y-o-Y) and earnings of EGP15 million (flat Y-o-Y).
