From the Editor:

While my childhood was mostly immersed in art there were a few impressionable years that involved street racing in my hometown of Cohasset that had dangerously (i.e. exciting) small and winding roads. I learned to drive quite well, and purchased my first red sports car before I had my driver’s license. So, you can imagine my delight when I turned 33 and received Formula Car Racing lessons with the Skip Barber Racing School in Sebring as a birthday present. After my first weekend in my fireproof driving gear and my red and white Formula car, I was convinced I could be the next Indy 500 winner – don’t laugh, I am still dreaming. I also spent the next several years trying to convince my two sons to do as I say, not as I do, when it came to my driving. Somehow I never thought of myself as an auto enthusiast but upon reflection, I realize I have had many memorable times delicately cleaning and waxing my cars with pride. I have more memories than I can count whenan automobile carried a smile on my face safely to and from adventures. And, I still stop and sigh when a beautiful car passes by. It is in that vain that we bring you the Sarasota AutoArt Show, ‘Art that Moves You’. A show for those who enjoy the automobile as beautiful piece of artwork that hopefully frames the driver’s personality and gives great pleasure to the owner, viewers and passengers. Come celebrate “Art that Moves You” when we not only showcase automobiles as art… but works of art on automobiles in the first “24-Hour Art Endurance Competition”.

Lots of Paint! The Sarasota AutoArt Show is hosting the fast and furious “24-Hour Art Endurance Competition” starting at 10 a.m. Saturday Morning, November 28th, 2011. Dozens of artists applied to be one of the ten hand-selected teams that will use a car as their canvas to create fine art in this endurance competition. All artists are required to hand paint or draw their entire design and no air-brushing or spray painting will be allowed. All the artists are professional with amazing portfolios. While many of the cars will be auto-wrapped in white by SignZoo to protect the original surface, the decisions to do so did not come easy for the sponsors and car owners.

Many of the artists are important and nobody can ultimately image how much the artwork will increase over time. All sponsors risk removing someone’s work that may exceed the values of the cars in years to come... imagine removing an Andy Warhol only to find out they are worth millions? The sponsors of each team had the opportunity to pick the car to be painted, the artist who will paint it and name their art team. Sponsors can have one or two cars exhibited along side their art team and will have a 10’ x 10’ tent for promoting their business. Sponsors will provide the pit crew for the 24-Hour Art Endurance that is some-what fashioned after the LeMans 24-Hour Endurance Race!

The ten sponsors, ten art teams and ten cars that will be competing are:

Michael Furman’s life-long love of photography has led to a thirty year professional career working for top automotive clients, magazines and books.

Michael’s specialty is in studio lighting and shoot-ing pre-war coach built classics: Bugatti, Delahaye, Cord, DuPont, Franklin, Rolls-Royce, Voisin, Delage, Duesenberg, Bentley, Cadillac, Lincoln, Alfa Romeo, Mercedes-Benz, Packard, Auburn, Talbot-Lago… The list is extensive and always growing. Race cars, American ‘50’s cars (Chevy, Chrysler, Caddy, Hud-son, Nash, Studebaker, Ford), sports cars (Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Aston Mar-tin, BMW) and modern dream cars extend the roster.

Michael’s first two books Motorcars of the Clas-sic Era and Automobiles of the Chrome Age were released to critical and public acclaim.

Speed, Style and Beauty, the Cars of the Ralph Lau-ren Collection was produced for the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston to coincide with their exhibition in the Spring of 2005. Latest titles include The Performing Art of the American Automobile which serves as the catalog for the Gateway Colorado Auto Museum, and Delahaye Styling and Design which was produced for the 2006 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. For 2007, Michael produced Curves of Steel which served as the catalog to the Phoenix Art Museum show of the same name. The Art and Colour of Gen-eral Motors was released in September, 2008, to coincide with GM’s 100th anniversary. All titles are available through www.CoachBuiltPress.com.

possibilities before starting an assignment. While

some photographers look to create other worldly

usually try a more subtle approach. Often times

our use of multiple images and compositing

circumvents the impracticalities of straight

photography. It may take quite a number of

smaller shots to build the final image. This affords

us the greatest control, usually saving time and money in the

process…”

The automobiles of the classic era 1925 to 1948 were distinguished by their graceful designs, premium crafts-manship, and unusual materials. The French Bugat-ti, Talbot, and Delage, the American Duesenberg and Packard, the Italian Alfa Romeo - such legendary cars brought art and simple elegance to the road. These and many other spectacular models from the automobile’s golden age are featured here in the extraordinary photo-graphs of Michael Furman. Never before has a photog-rapher compiled such a collection of cars, created with impeccable artistic appreciation and an exacting eye for detail. In more than 150 full-color photographs, Motor Cars of the Classic Era captures the breathtaking beau-ty of these objects of desire, some of them extremely rare and published here for the first time. An informa-tive text and an illustrated index of technical informa-tion describe the qualities that make each car unique. Sure to appeal to both the high-end automobile collector and the more casual car aficionado, this book is a visual tour de force, a deluxe, beautifully designed volume that matches in spirit the exquisite automobiles it celebrates.

Sarasota Chalk Festival

The Sarasota Chalk Festival is diving into its fourth season

November 1st - 7th 2011. Celebrating the history of the performance art

of street painting, hundreds of artists will travel to Sarasota from all over

the world to turn South Pineapple Avenue into walking Museum. Art-

ists will create a time-line of work starting with the early art-form when

street-painters used the red clay from fallen roof tiles, coal from fire-

places and white chalk on the bare earth to draw images of the Virgin

Mary and travel through to today’s current contemporary of movements.

Avenida de Colores, Inc. Avenida de Colores, Inc. was founded in 2010

by Denise Kowal as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation based in Sarasota,

Florida in the United States. The corporation is organized for the pur-

pose of providing students with experiences and instruction in the vi-

sual and performing arts and to enrich communities with cultural events.

The corporation produces the Sarasota Chalk Festival a cultur-

al event. The corporation functions solely on donations from pa-

trons, sponsorships, and grants and it is a fully volunteer organization.

Sarasota Chalk Festival History

In 2007, as president of the Burns Square Property Owners Association, Inc.

Kowal founded the Avenida de Colores Chalk Festival, a street painting festival

held on South Pineapple Avenue in the downtown Sarasota historic area known

as Burns Square. Only twenty-two artists participated in this first festival.

In 2009, the second Avenida de Colores Chalk Festival was held with ap-

proximately one hundred street painters participating, who were drawn

from all over the USA, and more than two hundred local stage performers.

In 2010, the Burns Square Property Owners Association relinquished the

Avenida de Colores Chalk Festival to the Avenida de Colores nonprofit cor-

poration. The street painting festival was renamed the Sarasota Chalk Fes-

tival and has grown into one of the most important street painting festi-

vals in the world. The festival expanded several blocks in Burns Square to

accommodate the two hundred and fifty street painters who participated,

being drawn from all over the world, which made the Sarasota Chalk Fes-

tival the first international street painting festival in the United States.

First international street painting festival in the U.S.

While pursuing its mission to create cultural events, in 2010, the Avenida de Colo-

res made history by producing the first international street painting festival in the

United States, called the Sarasota Chalk Festival. Street painting festivals started in

the United States in 1987, but this festival was the first to attract many of the best

street painting artists from all over the world to participate. The festival had notable

Guinness World Record holders Edgar Mueller from Germany, Leon Keer from Nether-

lands, and Tracy Lee Stum from the USA. Genna Panzarella from the USA, who was

the first woman to receive Italy’s honorable Maestra Madonnari title at the Internation-

al Grazi di Curtatone competition, participated as well as Vera Bugatti from Italy, who

also holds the Maestra Madonnari title. Maestro Madonnaro Edgar Mueller created a

100’ x 40’ 3-D street painting that is the first known contemporary street painting that

metamorphosed from one image to another with the change from day to night because

the painter used photoluminescence paints. The Sarasota Chalk Festival also was the

first street painting festival to have a Halloween-theme for the artists work as well as

three over-sized 3-D installations, one of which incorporating two-point perspective.

Tag Heuer have released a new watch, the MP4-12C is inspired by the McLaren MP4-12C super car. The dial has a carbon-fibre style pattern with a large central win-dow, which allows you to see the Chronograph and date functions at work. The layout is dominated by a large Orange zero at the 12 o’clock position in a nod to the speedom-eter design of the road car [Orange is McLaren’s traditional colour].

The case is 43mm and made of sandblasted titanium grade 2 which is the same ma-terial used by TAG Heuer.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live like the Jetsons? Well, the way technology is progressing, you might as well get set for the sci-fi kind of life. Earlier today, I wrote about futurist cars that could zip commuters round the world in two hours through vacuum tubes. Now, I read that stu-dents from Barcelona are working on clothes that facilitate urban mobility. Suddenly, science-fiction does not seem that fantastical anymore.

Students of the automotive design and fashion department of Barcelona’s European Institute of Design are working in col-laboration with Iniciativa BMW on a project that explores how city folk shall commute in the future. An exhibition of their creations will be held on the Rambla Catalunya in cen-tral Barcelona. The exhibition is named “El traje que te trans-porta“, which roughly translates into “Suits That Transport”.

Among the most interesting designs is “Comme des Voiture” (picture above). This mobile suit includes a pair of boots that have large ball-bearings on the soles and an intelligent visor of-fering real-time information. The “Flying Suit” also seems an interesting creation. The suit appears inflatable. But will it help the wearer fly to his destination? A third creation that catches the attention is “City-Skiing”. Ski enthusiasts would love this last piece, for it suggests skiing as a transport option within a city.

Whether a design project like this results in real solutions is anybody’s guess. However, one must applaud the level of creativity that the Barcelona students have brought to the design table.
