Editorial…

Bands vs Drum Corps Thinking back to my marching days (1965-1970), therewas a big gap between high school bands and drum &bugle corps. The distinctions were many – bands had allkinds of instruments, usually had more marching members,and paid much less attention to the marching aspect of theperformance. Drum corps on the hand, had very fewdifferent brass instruments, and percussion was made upof snares, tenors, bass, rudimental bass, & cymbals (nopit). Color guards were more polished with flags, rifles, andsabers. Execution in both the music and marching wereequally important, a result of many more practice hours. I do not recall many, if any of the corps members beingalso in band back in my time – although I am sure therewere some. A band back then was a high school thing –you were one piece of a big performance picture, whereas,looking back, I think in drum corps, you were challenged tobe the best individual you could be, and at the same timeblending together as a corps. The big high school band back in the late 60’s to myrecollection was St. Bernard’s – I think they won a statechampionship back then. Most of the other local highschools were much smaller than they are today. Drumcorps was somewhat at its zenith back then – there wereover 50 junior corps in Connecticut alone! Over time, both bands and drum corps have matured,and in some cases it’s hard to tell them apart. Some localshave told me that the high school bands in southeasternConnecticut are really exciting to watch, some of the best inthe state! But, on the other hand, I’ve also read where youcan always tell a drum corps member in a band – by theway they march, how they carry their instrument, and thequality of their performance. So just think of the opportunities that lay right in front ofour 7th Regiment. Back in my day, you wouldn’t think twiceof a high school glockenspiel or piccolo player being anasset to a drum corps, but today many bands membershave all the basics fundamentals down and just need thepolishing and precision that a drum corps can provide. What if the 7th Regiment could lure a few all star bandmembers from each high school band – that’s thechallenge going forward into 2006…

th Regiment competed in 11 competitions in June/August of 2005 – 5 more than the previous a second year corps, the 7th made great strides throughout the season, with the finale of g in their first DCI Class III Championships in Brockton, MA on August 9, 2005.

ent were represented with 41 members and 71 parents, volunteers, and SAA members joined in the festivities.

Recent SAA & 7TH Regiment Activities…

The SAA sponsored a Spaghetti Fundraiserheld at the American Legion in Norwich, whichturned out to be quite successful. Between 60-70people attended, things went so well the SAA isplanning to run this activity in other local towns aswell to bolster support for the corps and raise muchneeded funding. The BIG event to kick off the new year was the7th Regiment Open House. Approximately 49youth attended – 14 new members and 35 currentmembers. New members came from as far awayas Southington and Meriden – meaning the word isgetting out there about the 7th!!! A presentation wasgiven to parents and kids, introducing them todrum corps. Later the new and old membersseparated into sections to rehearse with theirinstructors. Parents then attended a meeting headed byCorps Director, Jeff Dozier. A Questions andAnswer period followed. Also noted were 5 new instructors for theupcoming year (see instructor list on the back pageof this newsletter). We also note that there were several 7th

members who couldn’t attend the open house butplan on being at the first rehearsal.

The SAA is also hard at work securing funds forthe upcoming season – plenty of thanks go out toMike Brown and others for their efforts to securegrants. Many other avenues will be looked at andone of the more successful activities last year wasthe 7th member sponsorship. The sponsorship letter and form can be presented to member’s families,friends and businesses to help defray the cost for amember. There were a few members last year thatpaid their entire membership costs through the sponsorship process. Impressive…! Of course, the fun part of a new year is the

practices and camps. Practices have alreadystarted, new and old faces coming together to learnand blend into a precision team. The instructionalstaff is busy designing the music score and drill thatthe 7th will be presenting next summer. And the veterans of the 7th Regiment can now be a part of the teaching process, as they can share theirexperiences from the past year or two with the newrookie recruits. It is hoped that the SAA Alumni members will

look at what part they can do - financial donations, volunteering, fundraisers, promotions, etc.Everyone plays a part and as the corps grows, thesmoother things will run, and the by-product will be the growth that the 7th members reach throughpractice, commitment, and success.
