Welcome to the SARPG Newsletter. Your RPG Committee has been very busy of the past couple of months the highlight being our biggest ever Youngstock Show for welsh, part welsh and riding ponies last January. We put this down to having back-to-back rings giving competitors two classes under different judges. While the day ran a little longer than we hoped, it was a super day. Full report inside. Our next event is the Foal Show which will be held on Sunday 3 rd May 2009 - at a new venue - Tilling Hill, Lot 6, Berry Hill Road, Echunga. The event has moved from Hazelmere as the property is no longer suitable due to a change of ownership. Tilling Hill is a very nice indoor arena with good facilities. Back-to-back rings will be offered. A copy of the program and entry form are enclosed. In a first for SA, sixteen welsh and part welsh studs have come together to produce a Regional Map of SA Studs for inclusion in the 2009 Welsh Journal. Special thanks to Michelle Perry for pulling this together and to all the Stud owners who agreed to participate. I am sure the map will be well sought out by either local people or interstate or overseas travelers wishing to visit SA studs. Have you ever thought of becoming a Welsh judge? If yes, then the WP&CS Society’s judges assessment process might be for you. So if you are at all interested we need you to ‘register’ your interest in participating. It doesn’t guarantee you a place in the process – you need to meet certain criteria set by Committee of Management – but it will help the RPG to plan for an assessment day in the middle of 2009. So if you are interested, please contact myself or Michelle Perry. Our details are on the back. If you are a Welsh Panel Judge already you will know that you have to attend a seminar every two years. The RPG plans to run one – in conjunction with the judges assessment day – but we also need you to ‘register’ your interest in attending. The ‘registration’ is necessary so that COM can allocate suitable judge assessors and seminar presenters. Again, contact me or Michelle Perry. Special congratulations to Rivington Stud’s versatile stallion Spring Rain who was our Most Successful Exhibit at the 2008 SA All Welsh. Unfortunately due to a collating error, another of Rivington’s ponies, Rivington Royal Hiccup was incorrectly announced the winner on the day. Once the error was discovered the RPG set about rectifying the problem as quickly as possible. It was unfortunate that Rivington Spring Rain didn’t get the accolade on the day and the RPG is sorry this didn’t happen as this pony clearly earned the prize. This is the second consecutive time Rivington Spring Rain has taken out this award. This was undoubtedly the best supported Youngstock show for many years and the RPG is indebted to everyone for taking the time and making the effort to show ponies. The weather was kind to us......but unfortunately the day was a bit long. This was mainly due to having the second futurity class so shouldn’t be a problem in future. There was also a bit of confusion about the order of the rings. Again the RPG is on to it and will be able to address this in time for the next show. So a big thank you to everyone for their patience and understanding.

Finally, just so you can start planning ahead, next year’s Youngstock Show will be held on Sunday 17

th January

2010…again at Oakbank. We have “ordered” a clear day with temperatures in the low 30s!! Fingers crossed. So see you there.

2008 EFA National Showhorse

and Rider Championships from Val Probert

The EFA National Showhorse & Rider Championships were held in December last year at the Werribee Equestrian Centre. Welsh ponies from South Australia again made a strong showing.

The leading rein class was capably represented by Rivington Titmouse and Rivington Victoria piloted by the Fricker twins. More Rivington ponies represented SA in the Small Show Hunter, Rivington Neon

& Rivington Royal Hiccup (above) both giving lovely shows for their junior riders with Rivington Royal Hiccup taking out the Championship. R Royal Hiccup was ridden by Jasmine Anderson. (photo credit Derek O’Leary)

Mirinda Regatta (right) owned and ridden by Kelli Probert represented SA in the Large Show Hunter Pony class and took out the Reserve Champion National Large Show Hunter Pony title. Regatta qualified for the National Championships by winning the South Australian Large Show Hunter Pony Championship for the fifth year running. This achievement adds to his success at the 2008 Adelaide Royal Show, where he was awarded the Champion Large Show Hunter Pony & the Champion Led Show Hunter Gelding.

# STOP PRESS ## Mirinda Regatta announced as the Show Hunter of the Year at the recent EFA Horseman’s Night of the Year. These awards acknowledge the best horse & rider in each EFA discipline, Eventing, Dressage, Show Jumping, Show Horse, Carriage Driving & Vaulting.

Foal Futurity What’s it all about?

The Foal Futurity classes are designed to encourage and reward breeders. The Futurity event is for two year olds and is based on breeders nominating the ‘future offspring’’ for the future classes. This means that breeders make the first nomination for the Futurity class before the mare foals and must be received by the organiser before 31st July each year. The first nomination costs about $3.30 per entry. Julie Young, long-time RPG member has run the Foal Futurities for many years……as well as doing the demanding duties of the Treasurer! The beauty of the Futurity is that ‘participants’ can opt in or out at various stages of the competition before the ultimate class is held. The first opportunity to do this is at the second nomination stage. In May or June after the mare has foaled, a second nominations is sent to entrants inviting them to make a decision on whether they wish to continue or opt out. The beauty of the second nomination stage is that the entrant can make their decision after assessing the foal after it is born. The second nomination is around $6.60 per entry. While the Futurity is largely a ‘breeders event’, if the foal is sold in the first two years, the Futurity class can be continued by the new owner. The third and final nomination is sent to the breeder (or new owner) around May/June the next year, when the pony is a yearling and must be returned to the organiser by the 31st July – as per the first and second nomination due dates. The nomination cost for the third nomination is $11.00. The Foal Futurity process culminates with the judging of the two year old ponies at the Youngstock Show in January each year. Foal Futurity classes are always judged by three judges and awards are made for Welsh Mountain Pony colt and filly (Section A), Welsh Pony colt and filly (Section B), Welsh Pony of Cob Type colt and filly (Section C) and Welsh Cobs colt and filly (Section D) with the winners of each class coming together for the Best Welsh Foal Futurity. There are also classes for part Welsh colt and filly futurities with the winners coming together for a Best Part Welsh Foal Futurity. The winner of each class receives a cash prize. This is for the breeder, however if the pony has been sold by the breeder a percentage of the prize money goes to the breeder and the remainder to the new owner. The prize money is usually a reasonable amount and is calculated from the ‘pool’ of money collected from the three nominations less a small amount for administrative costs. Essentially, the more people who participate, the higher the ultimate prize money. So, if you’re breeding a pure Welsh or part Welsh to be born in the 2009/2010 foaling season, why not get on board and put in a nomination for the Foal Futurity. A nomination form will be available in the next Newsletter. Or if you want to know more, contact Julie Young on 0425 327 640 or email her on [email protected].

Amadora reports that in February Cataraqui Selyf competed at his first dressage competition and placed 2

nd in the Novice at Mt

Crawford, he was also shown at the All Breeds Show at Murray Bridge where he went Supreme Welsh Exhibit. His flatwork training is progressing well and we are looking forward to him passing on his lovely nature and trainability to his progeny. Pen-nant Primetime has

settled well into regular work under saddle. We will stand Primetime in the coming season. We were delighted with Chesson Park Cosi who placed 2

nd in her 2yo class at the SA Youngstock Show and

last seasons foal, A. Lucia will attend the foal show. Glen Lewis Stud has two new Section C fillies. A stunning chestnut by Wingana Gideon x Nawarrah Park Poptart, and one by NP Country Boy x Acheron Eleri. We haven't as yet seen this one as the mare is still at stud in Vic being rejoined to Country Boy. Apparently the foal is "Charcoal" so it will be interesting to see what colour it is, maybe black? This filly is very similarly bred to our mare NP Poptart. Going to our move to C’s, we have sold the A stallion Morning Mist Ceridwyn back to Victoria. So at the moment we don’t have a boy here at all – how nice. Cataraqui Emily has been broken to saddle, though it’s a case of beating my daughter Erin to her as to who gets to ride. Janorie - Janine Kranz's Kerulen Migali has had a very successful season. He was Reserve Champion show hunter pony at Clare Ag Show to Kerulen Mareeba, Champion Ridden Part Welsh at the SA All Welsh, Supreme Champion Non Purebred at the APSB Stud Show, Res Champion Led Part Welsh and Champion Ridden Part Welsh at Northern Hack & Halter. He also had a very successful day at Festival All Breeds Show, winning his led Welsh class and going on to be awarded Reserve Champion. Kerulen Stud Welsh B mare, Kerulen Mareeba, owned and shown by Kali Rodda of Port Pirie has been very successful on the northern Ag show circuit. Mareeba has shown just how versatile Welsh ponies can be, winning in the hack ring then going on to win Junior Showjumping events at the same show. Jessington Farm reports that they have been trying keep cool at Wilmington. The horses and children coped well. Having troughs that overflow and cause puddles was a source of entertainment for the ponies. We haven’t competed very much over the last few months but took the babies down to Oakbank for the Youngstock. Jessington Eclipse Sonata did really well picking up a Reserve Champion Yearling in Ring A. On a sadder note, (for us) we sold him to the Hutchinson Family that day. We wish them all the best and although Jessica cried all the way home, she has come home and started handling Miss JoyBelle. Dalbrae Hetty and Jessica are starting the local gymkhanas in the next couple of months so it will be good to be out and about again. Rivington Stud reports that they are very proud to have bred four ponies that qualified and competed at the EFA Australian Show Horse Championships last December. They all proudly represented SA with Rivington Neon owned by Ellie Balinger along with Rivington Royal Hiccup owned by Rivington Stud in the Small Show Hunter class and Rivington Titmouse leased by Corumbene Stud and Rivington Victoria owned by Rivington Stud in the Leading Rein class. Lots of foals! With the latest arrival, a stunning grey filly out of Hazelmere Rhonwen and by Rivington Gypsy Joker. Unfortunately Rivington Seren was put down. Seren was Rivington Spring Rain’s maternal Grand dam. She will be remembered through the many ponies at Rivington who carry her bloodlines. Wadelee Pony Stud has been relatively quiet due to work commitments, but we are thrilled that Wynara Talk of the Town is expecting his first crop. He has been joined with Ashadatan Park Chance. W. Talk of the Town has been enjoying a break, but is hopefully going to be competing at the upcoming Freestyle Dressage to Music in April at the Mount Gambier Veledrome. Acheron Guinevere will also be at this competition, but is currently loving her new found discipline of Showjumping! Courtney has been having an absolute ball on Winnie taking her to lots of Freshman's days gaining experience to be able to hopefully compete in Working Hunter events in the future.

Wynara Stud would like to thank everyone who inquired about Wynara Touch of Bronze who is recovering well from her colic operation in January, we hope to have her back in work ready for Adelaide Royal later this year. In the meantime we have her full sister Touch of Romance back after being out on lease. She has been very successful in the 3 weeks we have had her back and Dani is enjoying riding a galloway again. Dani is also campaigning an under 12hh pony W Butterfly Kisses and large show pony W Celebration. Both ponies have only been under saddle for 8 weeks and doing well in the show ring. Other Wynara bred ponies to do well lately are Wynara Lyric who won the Champion Ridden Part Welsh out of 53 entries and 1st Childs Ridden Galloway at Canberra Royal. Wynara Valentino won Supreme RPSB, Saddle Pony and Champion Part Welsh and was then sashed Supreme All Breeds at Murray Bridge All Breed Show out of a line up of 13 breeds. W Chilli, W. Emblem, W. Florentine, W. Touch of Romance, W. Butterfly Kisses and W. Celebration all placed highly at the SHC Rising Star Show.
