Beauty - A black perspective

The documentary is based on Ribane’s path breaking book of the same title about the history of the beauty industry in South Africa. The documentary is a journalistic approach to the culture, glamour, hype, struggles, challenges, triumphs and icons of beauty practitioners from a Black perspective.

It is about the influences, reflections and celebration of beauty trends on Black communities over the years and how that has shaped their understanding, behaviour and beliefs to date.

LADY AFRICA: THE MARGARET SINGANA STORY

She was an internationally renowned musician during apartheid, but when a mysterious tragedy hit second time around and couldn't recover again, she lost everything overnight.

Internationally renowned musician Margaret 'Lady Africa' Singana’s music career is brought to an abrupt end by a mysterious incident, leaving her wheelchair bound for the rest of her life.

Lady Africa: a Margaret Singana Story is a feature length documen-tary that celebrates the life of this musical giant daughter of the soil, while looking for answers to circumstances leading to Singana’s demise in the process.

Development

Born into poverty, she died poor with a heart disease. She traveled the world and was the leader of a gen-eration, and inadvertently died right at the brink of freedom.

As a descendant of a resilient fighter in a war against Apartheid, I examine freedom; angle by angle and ask the most important question: Was it worth it? Freedom has always been seen as a destination in South Africa, something that was fought for and ultimately attained. I find it to be quite a restless place and have always questioned its divinity. Ma’Ngoyi’s influence is still felt to this day, as each year, women stand in remembrance of one of the great-est demonstrations where she orchestrated a 20 000 women- march in protest against the pass laws that existed then.

MEET THE MPOFU-WALSH-OAKLEY-SMITH FAMILY

A part not apart.

A family has transcended purported racial stereotypes and has proven to the world that all races can get along. It’s just a matter of respect and appreciation of each other’s differences that brings them together to form a powerful bond that can’t be shaken or questioned by any outsiders, opinions or stereotypes.

They have proven that not conforming to the norms of society can create much needed synergy which the world needs to be part of so let’s meet the Mpofu-Walsh-Oakley-Smith interracial and multicultural family and see just how they do it.

Development

South Africa's Democracy Up in Flames.

After 1994, South Africa was a symbol of hope but today the country shows signs of despair. The 2012 Marikana massacre shines a light on the insidious history of mining. Despite the many fruits of freedom, unemployment, poverty and inequality have grown to unsustainably high levels.

In the documentary we meet A FATHER who lost his son, a WIDOW with no money to feed her family, and a MINER as they grapple with the ramifications of the tragic atrocity and go on their own personal journeys in search of answers.

MY FATHER, MY HERO

A 13 part documentary series that will see each episode profile a celebratory story by child to father.

South Africa has one of the world’s worst reported violence against children and women. What if we had a show that evoked dialogue, sparked thoughts, encouraged communication, possibly set a good example for male parenting, showed the rare but highly seeked affection and gratitude?

What if we could open the opportunity for children to celebrate their fathers and we shift mindsets about fatherhood and redefine the role of men by the stories we choose to put in the spotlight?

Development

It was all through natural remedies maintaining the relationship between Mud and man.

A thousand years ago, majority of the African race verily relied on natural substances. Throughout the years the average African male and female have disconnected themselves from the ancient ways of healing. Today we discover how birth has revolutionized our lives; in ancient times a premature child did not experience going through modern medical care procedures, it was all through natural remedies maintaining the relationship between Mud and Man.

We follow three women born prematurely and 25 women who have to decide between technology and nature, to determining what we trust for the future of our children, technology or nature.

South Africa has a vibrant film and television industry that is growing in reputation and is competitive internationally. Local and foreign filmmakers are taking advantage of the country’s diverse, unique locations, as well as low produc-tion costs and favourable exchange rate, which makes it more affordable to make a movie or shoot a TV show here than in Europe or the US.

South African films and television productions have attained substantial global recognition including an Academy Award for best foreign language film in 2006 for Tsotsi, Oscar-nominated films like Yesterday, and U-Carmen eKhayalit-sha, a Xhosa-language film which won the Golden Bear award at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival. Documentary film A Lion’s Tale won a non-fiction Emmy in 2006, recognised for its “most outstanding cultural and artistic programming”. South Africa’s documentary and factual films continue to be selected for screening and receive recognition at interna-tional festivals including IDFA and HotDocs.

Building on South Africa’s reputation for quality and creative film making, a string of successful big budget international productions have been filmed here, including District 9, which was nominated for four Academy Awards, including best picture; Fury Road, the fourth Mad Max film; Blood Diamond with Leonardo DiCaprio; and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus.

Opportunities abound, with the makers of movies, television, commercial and other productions being attracted by South Africa’s highly skilled film crews and technicians, excellent technical capacity and infrastructure, good weather and an incredible and stable film and TV production incentive that ranges from 20% to 50% depending on the kind of production and nature of ownership.

South African Indies (SA Indies) is an umbrella brand for South African independent filmmakers and companies, estab-lished by the Association for Transformation in Film and Television (ATFT) for their delegations sponsored by the depart-ment of trade and industry (DTI) to international film and television markets.
