And so another month passes, and what a spiritual and blessed month April always is. I always get the sense that besides for December, for obvious reasons, April must be one of the holiest month's of the year. Not only do we have Ram Navami, and Passover to celebrate, but we have Easter. Easter is one of the oldest and most important festivals of the Christian Church, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and always a reminder of true devotion and passion. So as we move into this new month, let us not forget what has been sacrificed for us. Let us put our hatred and differences aside, and let us embrace the life that has been given to us. Too often I hear the gossip and taint of jealousy floating around the "grapevine" and I can't help but sit and wonder why we all just can't be grateful to be alive. To be here, to enjoy what we have, and to let others live their own lives without the judgment of others, so embrace the blessings and the forgiveness that has been granted to us. In conclusion and as usual, I want to encourage you all to seek out your fellow South Africans, open your home to those who are in need, make a friend to share recipes with, or invite that new family over for a good beer and braai. If you don't know where to start, please remember that on the West Coast we have the South African Expat Club of Southern California, and on the East Coast we have Saffers in the South, both clubs can be located on Facebook and are well known, so if you would like to connect and attend an event, reach out and take that first step!

Never question a drunk bergie...........I was shopping at the local supermarket where I selected the following:

A litre milk A carton eggs A carton orange juice A 250g pack of bacon A head of lettuce A can of coffee As I was unloading my items on the conveyor belt to check out, a drunk bergie standing behind me watched as I placed the items in front of the Cashier.

Staged just east of the downtown area in the beautiful 277-acre spread of art deco buildings known as Fair Park, the State Fair represents a grand tradition that began in 1886. It’s the nation’s largest such gathering, pulling in more than three million attendees each year, all of whom get a hearty welcome from Big Tex, a 52-foot mechanical cowboy with size 70 boots and a 75-gallon hat, who has waved at visitors and offered a drawling ‘Howdy, Folks!’ since 1952. Up and Coming Star ROBBIE KLAY by Chantelle Robbertse

In a beautiful South African fusion restaurant, Eldorado Bar & Grill in Long Beach, CA , I have the opportunity again to witness a stunning performance by ROBBIE KLAY. Nostalgically he takes us back to old country music by Johnny Cash and less familiar Afrikaans songs that he wrote himself. Looking out at the crowd I realize it is not only the entertainer in Robbie that captivates the audience, but the deep husky voice that could easily be compared to that of Brad Paisley. This is after all the 3rd performance I am honored to attend, and every time I leave the room with a certain surety that I am a witness to something big that is happening.

His talent is evidenced by the continued applause of the audience, the many camera flashes and the twinkle in a young girl’s eyes. After the show, I quickly rushed over to grab a picture with him, not to mention the hundreds I took during the show, and to get a quick word in with his agent, Petter King, who assures me that Robbie Klay is getting ready to do his first US Tour later this year after he performs at the Steve Hofmeyr shows in Houston and Atlanta on June 28th and 29th. His tour will include cities such as Houston, Atlanta, NY, Charlotte, Orlando, Phoenix and Orange County, CA. With pure excitement he explains Robbie’s career as an avid actor and singer/songwriter that is on a highway to success in the good old USA.

Understandably the case for a T-shirt line is in the works that will be made available for sale during his US Tour and after. I quickly mark my calendar with the dates to his upcoming performances which will be with his own band, and make small book mark promises next to each to ensure that I don’t forget to attend. It is always amazing to see a dream lead so many to America, and yet so few have what it takes to make that big breakthrough. Taking another bite of my “boerewors” roll I glance over at his team, a team that believes so deeply in his talent and his abilities, that I admire such devotion and dedication with true and honest respect.

Types of Paintbrushes and Their Uses

Planning to take up an art class? You better get acquainted with the types of brushes that are needed to get you started. Take a look at the brushes mentioned in this Buzzle article, to gain insight on the types and their respective uses.

Considered to be an artist's weapon, the paintbrush is an essential part of art classes. Let's just call it the artist's pen, for he uses it to convey his innermost feelings. An artist for that matter, needs a variety of brushes to bring his/her canvas to life. And how many brushes can he possibly use? Basically, there are eight main types of brushes that are used widely by artists.

These brushes come in different sizes and yes, of course, in two different bristle types. While the natural bristles brushes are best suited for oil-based colors, synthetic brushes can be used for both the water and oil-based paints. Depending on the shape of the bristles, brushes are used for different purposes. In addition to that, these brushes are available in different sizes ranging from 0 - 10, which gives you a variety of brushes and strokes to experiment with.

FlatThe ferrule or bracelet holding the bristles of this brush is flat, thus making the bristles spread out uniformly in a rectangular shape. The bristles of this brush are flattened and trimmed straight across, giving it an almost flat shape. Longer haired flats hold more paint and are known as 'one stroke' brushes. Flats can be used for practically any medium of painting.

Flats are used for washes, shading, and blending. They are used to lay down wide horizontal strokes, like when painting skies, landscapes etc., and also to create a smooth blend between two or more colors. You can use them while applying a base coat, floating, stroke work, blending, washes, and varnishing.

BrightThe bright brush resembles the flat brush, as both have a flat ferrule. The only differentiating factor is the length of the hair of these brushes; while flats have longer bristles, brights have relatively shorter bristles. They do not hold as much color as the wash brushes. Bright brushes are ideal for oil, acrylic, and decorative mediums.

Brights are specifically used for blending paint, and also to salvage messy pictures. Besides, brights are also used for short, controlled strokes, popularly known as dabbing. The short bristles are also good for dry brushing or creating scratchy strokes.

FilbertThe filbert brush has a thick flat ferrule which contains chiseled round edged bristles. Like the flat, it can hold a fair amount of water, making it a perfect choice for washes. The hair holds together when wet, making it suitable for blending and stroking. Best used for acrylic, oil, and decorative mediums.

Best used to fill rounded areas and create rounded strokes for flowers and leaves. It is also used for blending and figurative work. You can also use it to create shades and highlights.

AngularAnother from the flat family, the angular brush has a flat ferrule containing bristles that are cut at an angle. It is set with short-length hair at one end and longer ones at the other end. Angular brushes are used on a large-scale with watercolors, acrylic, and decorative mediums.

Angular brushes are the perfect pick for precise strokes, lines, and curves. They can be used to float or create ruffled petals and leaves. Best used for some tight shading and highlighting.

FanA short flat ferrule fans out the hair of the brush. Used specifically with oil and acrylic paints, the fan brush is excellent for blending and creating textures. Fan brushes can be used both wet and dry to gently blend in colors.

Stiff bristles fan brushes are used to create textured effects, especially for stipple trees and foliage. Useful to lightly drag paint across the painting.

RoundUnlike the previously mentioned brushes, round brushes are characterized by a round ferrule. Hair tips are either rounded or have a pointed tip. They come in variety of sizes and are widely used to master brush control.

Round brushes are perfect for detailing, washes, filling, and creating strokes. You can use them to create broad lines and fill seemingly small areas with ease.

MopAnother from the round family, the mop brush is made of soft absorbent fiber, making it perfect for laying in large areas of color. Don't confuse yourself with a makeup brush that can look exactly like a mop brush.

The soft bristles are perfect for blurring, softening a hard edge, and blending. It can also be used to absorb extra paint/water from the canvas.

LEG OF VENISON IN BUTTERMILK MARINADELEG OF VENISON IN BUTTERMILK MARINADE

* 3kg leg of venison* 12 pieces of lard or fatty bacon* 15ml (1 tbsp) freshly ground black pepper* 10ml (2 tsp) chilli powder (optional)* 5ml (1 tsp) dried thyme* 5ml (1 tsp) dried sage* 15ml (1 tbsp) vinegar* 2 large onions, sliced* 3 bay leaves* 6 cloves garlic, peeled* 5ml (1 tsp) whole black peppercorns* Stick of cinnamon* 1 litre buttermilk* 45ml (3 tbsp) oil* 125g bacon or pancetta, diced* 500ml (2 cups) beef stock

With a sharp knife, make incisions into the venison and lard it by folding a piece of lard or bacon around the sharp point of the blade and inserting it into the incision, then pulling the knife out.

Rub the meat with the pepper, chilli powder, thyme and sage and leave to stand for 1-2 hours.

Combine the vinegar, onions, bay leaves, garlic, peppercorns, cinnamon and buttermilk. Add the venison, coat well and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 2 days, turning 2-3 times. Remove the meat from the marinade and pat dry with paper towel.

Heat the oil in a large ovenproof pot and fry the bacon or pancetta for 1-2 minutes. Add the venison and brown on all sides. Pour over the stock, cover and transfer to the oven, preheated to 160 C.

Roast for 2-3 hours until tender, turning once.

Serves 6-8

ORANGE BRANDY

* 6 large oranges

* 400g (2 cups) sugar

* 1 cinnamon stick

* 2.5ml (1/2 tsp) ground coriander

* 1 litre brandy

Peel the rind thinly from the oranges, cutting away the pith. Cut the peel into thin strips and place in a large jar or bottle. Squeeze the juice from the oranges and add to the jar with the sugar and spices. Pour over the brandy and seal the jar. Shake to dissolve the sugar and leave in a cool, dark place for 2 months. Strain through muslin, pour into a clean jar and store until ready to serve.

How To Explain Your WeaknessesAt some point during your job search, probably during the interview, you will likely be asked about your weaknesses. Employers normally ask this to see how you approach a difficult question, whether or not you recognize your weaknesses, what you're doing about them, and whether your individual strengths and weaknesses make you the right candidate for the job. Although you may be reluctant to admit your weaknesses, the best way to answer this question is to be honest. Here are some approaches that are known to work:

1. Repackage a strength as a weakness - As long as it is not blatantly phony and self-serving, this strategy can work (ex. "I work too hard"). This way, you are being honest, but you aren't hurting yourself too much since your weakness could be viewed as a positive quality by some. Other examples of this include "I do not quit until I get the job done, even if it keeps me up all night" and "I'm a perfectionist; I get irritated by even the tiniest mistakes."

2. Don't mention a big weakness that could cost you a job - Even though you should be honest, you should try to present yourself as best you can, since a job position is at stake. We all have weaknesses, but that doesn't mean that you need to tell your employer all of your faults. If you say things such as "I always miss my deadlines", it will not help your cause in terms of getting the job.

3. Keep your answer factual and brief - Don't ramble too much when talking about your weaknesses since you don't want to give the interviewer multiple reasons not to hire you. Just mention what your weaknesses are, and how you are working to deal with them. A little preparation/practice never hurts either. No need to add extra details unless the employer asks for them.

Employers learn a lot when they ask you to describe your weaknesses. Your answer offers insight into your personality as well as your capabilities and whether or not you're fit for the job at stake. This is why you need to be able to honestly describe your weaknesses without hurting your chances of getting the job. You can help your chances by putting a positive spin on your weaknesses, but try not to make this too obvious. Just be confident, keep it to the point, and you'll be fine.

Ubuntu is an ancient African word meaning 'humanity to others'. It also means 'I am what I am because of who we all are'. Ubuntu is what got me picked to be on season 17 of the hugely popular TV Show Survivor in Gabon Africa after 8 years of applying and Ubuntu is what continues to be my driving force off Survivor. I am the only South African to play Survivor and the Producers were fascinated by the word, Ubuntu and kept asking me what it meant and why this was to be my philosophy.. I thought it would work with my tribe to make us the best ever as we were in the birth place of Ubuntu. What I didn’t realize was my driving passion to get “on Survivor” which I could never explain was actually to be “off Survivor” and have that as a platform to continue to spread the message of Ubuntu to thousands. This I am accomplishing through the motivational speaking I have done to over 400 groups and Reality Rally which is in its 4th year of production. The catalyst of my "celebrity" was what was in store for me to be able to do something so much bigger, that is Ubuntu. Out of the depth of disappointment the seed of an idea flourished and has benefitted far more people than me being on Survivor longer would ever have benefited me. I know that this idea is driven by the spirit of Ubuntu and that the ideas that came to me on the paths in the jungle of Africa, has become the path that many have chosen to follow with me. It is a path that I lead with my heart and guide with my mind and I follow a quote from my hero, Nelson Mandela. “A leader is like a shepherd, he stays behind the flock, letting the most nimble go out ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realizing that all along they are being directed from behind.”  I have been blessed to gather many “nimble” I call my Production Team of 50 who take on all parts of the event and make it their own and make it all happen. That is Ubuntu. We are blessed with over 120 sponsors who provide for all the needs of event thus not depleting our charitable donation, that is Ubuntu. We have over 300 volunteers who work all weekend and all of this is what makes us the premier Reality Star fundraiser ever, that is Ubuntu. Reality Rally is a three-day weekend of "Fun for Funds" every April and 100% of the net proceeds benefit Michelle’s Place Breast Cancer Resource Center, which provides education, support, and assistance to women,men and families in the Temecula valley and surrounding areas who are fighting for their lives with breast cancer, that is Ubuntu. We have countless stories of how being involved in Reality Rally as a participant, sponsor, volunteer, who come from all over the country, has impacted their lives in a much needed way, that is Ubuntu. What are the five senses?

Sight: The ability of the brain and eye to detect light, color and distance of objects so we don’t walk into a lamp post.

Hearing: The ability of the brain and ear to sense sound waves and vibrations so we don’t step in front of an oncoming bus.

Smell: Also known as olfaction, this is a chemical sense. We can recognise a wide variety of smells and odors. Some smells are pleasant and some are not! The ability of the brain and olfactory receptors which are located in the nose are what allow us to smell.

Touch: While the other four senses (sight, hearing, smell, and taste) are located in specific parts of the body, your sense of touch is found all over in your skin. The skin is full of nerve endings.

Hey: Handy word used in a variety of contexts. It can be an interjection, e.g., Hey! What do you mean I have bad breath? It can be a question, meaning “what” or “pardon”. Type 1 DiabetesType 1 diabetes – previously called “juvenile onset diabetes” – results when the body is no longer able to produce enough of the blood sugar-lowering hormone insulin that it needs. Fore some reason (usually autoimmunity) the majority of the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas has died.

Type 1 diabetes is treated with injections of the insulin that the body lacks.

The more carbohydrates you eat the greater doses of insulin are needed. This usually makes the blood sugar more difficult to regulate, with higher average blood sugar levels. Many people therefore experience that a reduced amount of carbohydrates in the diet makes it easier to keep blood sugar stable and at normal levels.

The Effect of Fewer Carbohydrates

Before the change there are large spikes from carbohydrate-rich food, and large drops in blood sugar from corresponding amounts of insulin. Eating instead fewer carbohydrates and taking less insulin will logically enough produce much smaller fluctuations. It thereby becomes easier to maintain a more normal blood sugar level without risking hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

WeightOverweight diabetics (both type 1 and type 2) will as a rule lose weight on a low-carbohydrate diet.

CholesterolBut what happens to blood lipids when you eat fewer carbohydrates, and a higher proportion of fat? The fact is that recent studies (contrary to what was previously believed) show clearly improved cholesterol numbers.

Blood PressureBlood pressure also often improves on a low-carbohydrate diet, which is partly, but probably not completely, explained by the weight loss.

I have heard of many people who have had to reduce or stop using blood pressure medications, when their blood pressure had dropped too low. A common symptom is then dizziness and a feeling of weakness.

NOTEWith insulin-treated diabetes it’s important to monitor your blood sugar closely initially when starting an LCHF diet! A diet including few carbohydrates usually causes a greatly reduced need for insulin. It’s then important to adjust (lower) the doses sufficiently to prevent blood sugar from dropping too low. This should, if possible, be done with the support of your physician or diabetes nurse, especially if you have limited experience of insulin adjustment yourself.

You also need to be diligent about closely checking your blood sugar in the event of an acute illness, please see below.

Insulin for Type 1 Diabetics

BloodsugarmeasuringThe doses of insulin need to be reduced significantly on a low-carbohydrate diet. As a starting point, a reduction of 50% may be appropriate when on a strict LCHF diet (compared to eating plenty of carbohydrates). However, this varies with the individual and it’s not possible to predict how large a reduction is needed. There’s only one reliable way: check your blood sugar often when changing your diet and adjust doses accordingly.If you feel uncertain, make a gradual transition with a gradually reduced amount of carbohydrates in the diet over a few days or more.

The result (after adjusted dosing) will usually be significantly more stable blood sugar, with a decreased risk of hypoglycemia, in addition to other potential benefits on weight and health from lower insulin doses.

To be able to manage entirely without insulin injections in the long run will, in principle, not be possible regardless of how few carbohydrates you eat. However, some people may in the best case maintain well-regulated blood sugar with only basal insulin when on a strict LCHF diet. Mealtime insulin will then be something that’s only used if one makes an exception and eats more carbohydrates.

If Blood Sugar Drops Too LowImmediately eat something carbohydrate-rich, such as a fruit or a sandwich. A glass of juice or glucose tablets may also work well. They raise blood sugar. If your blood sugar drops too low you should strongly consider reducing your medication. If you need help doing this contact your doctor.

Acute Illness and KetoacidosisNote also that the need for insulin – regardless of which foods you eat – increases with acute illness. It’s not uncommon with dangerous ketoacidosis (life threatening condition caused by severe insulin deficiency) in connection with, for example, stomach illness during which you don’t eat and therefore may forget to take your insulin. http://www.dietdoctor.com/http://www.dietdoctor.com/

The largest Native American reservation in the country covers over 27,000 square miles in northeastern Arizona and smaller adjoining parts of Utah and New Mexico. A world unto itself, the Navajo Nation is large enough to contain the smaller Hopi Reservation and world-famous sights such as Monument Valley and Canyon de Chelly National Monument, with vast land to spare. It is home to some 250,000 tribe members who are spread thinly across the high desert, rivers and mountains of Diné Bikéyah, as the Navajo call their homeland. Many still live in the traditional ways, farming or herding sheep, horses and cattle, and conducting ceremonies in eight-sided buildings called hogans to nurture a state of spiritual harmony known as hozho.

Gallup, New Mexico, is the commercial centre of ‘the rez’, but Window Rock, Arizona, is its administrative hub. Here you’ll find the tribe’s council chamber and police headquarters, as well as a small zoo (involved in reintroducing the wolf to the Arizona wild) and the Navajo Nation Museum, Library and Visitor Centre, with displays on tribal history, geology and archaeology. On the way in or out of town, stop by the Hubbell Trading Post, known for its Navajo, Hopi and Zuni crafts. The trading post today is more a living museum than a store, continuing its traditional role as a place for meeting people and exchanging news.

Tuba City, Arizona, is one of the most diverse communities on the reservation, with many Anglo and Hopi residents as well as members of other native tribes. It sits in one of the most eye-catching stretches of the Painted Desert, and is home to the historic Tuba Trading Post, a two-storey showroom built in 1870 that’s one of the best places to shop for jewellery and other crafts.

Between Tuba City and Monument Valley on Highway 160 is the turn-off for little-visited Navajo National Monument, which protects three of the most impressive Anasazi ruins in the Southwest. The stunning 100-room Keet Seel cliff dwellings are a 17-mile round-trip hike from the Visitor Centre, but the trip is well worth it.

Encircled by the much larger Navajo Reservation, the Hopi Indian Reservation (sometimes referred to as Hopiland) consists of 12 ancient villages and a handful of more-recent settlements spread across three high, narrow mesas. Tribe members have lived in a few of these villages for well over 800 years, making them some of the oldest continually inhabited settlements in North America. Adobe buildings on the edge of 600-foot-high flat-topped mesas give the reservation a strong sense of history, and the tribe—with some 5,000 members living here—is one of the most traditional in the country. Visitors are welcome to the Tutsqua, the Hopi ancestral lands, but they’re expected to behave with respect, and photography or recording of any kind are strictly prohibited at all times. USA Rugby announced StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., will host the Men’s Eagles’ IRB Pacific Nations Cup match against Japan Saturday, June 14, at 7:30 P.M. ET.

The premier facility in southern California, StubHub Center is the home of the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA of Major League Soccer and was the site of the Eagles’ PNC clash with Tonga last June.

“StubHub Center is a first-class venue and we are excited to be going back to Carson this year with an important test for our Eagles,” USA Rugby Events Director Jen Gray said. “The support we’ve received from the local market is indicative of the area’s thirst for international rugby.”

The Eagles qualified for IRB Rugby World Cup England 2015 with an aggregate, 59-40, victory against Uruguay last month. The match at StubHub Center in June will serve as a RWC warm up, as the opposition could be in the Eagles’ pool in England with Samoa, Scotland and South Africa.

The Eagles have a 12-1-7 all-time record against Japan, with last year's PNC match at Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo the 20th meeting between the two nations. The Eagles last defeated Japan in the IRB Rugby World Cup 2003.

Pre-sale tickets for local rugby clubs will be available April 7-11, with tickets on sale for the general public beginning April 14.

Alongside last year’s match against Tonga, the 30,000-seat stadium also saw the Women’s Eagles complete their three-match series with France in front of a record crowd for women’s test rugby.

Tickets for the Eagles’ first match of the summer against Scotland – June 7 at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas – are still on sale. The Eagles will play two PNC matches on U.S. soil against Japan and Canada, with the date and venue for the second match set to be announced in the next week.

We welcome people with no experience through to those who have been playing all their lives. We believe rugby will only continue to grow in the US if we can provide the chance for inexperienced players to train and play alongside experienced ones. So if you've never played, got the urge to take it up again after a long break, or want to challenge yourself at a higher level then you're welcome to come down and join us.

We train for our XVs Fall league season (August - November) and Spring (March - May) season on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. In June + July we play 7s and enter 4-5 tournaments over the course of the summer. And we have indoor off-season training in the winter - so no matter what time of year it is, chances are we're playing rugby and would love to have you join us!

Rugby really is a game for all shapes and sizes but there are some requirements; you must have cleats and a mouthguard to play, and the willingness to learn a new and complicated but very rewarding sport. As long as you have those you can get away with whatever you want to wear until you get all the proper kit.
