On Life, Love and other unmentionables..........I had the honour of spending time with Pamela Nomvete, star actress not only in South Africa but also in the United Kingdom. Currently starring in the television series Coronation street, she took some time out of her busy schedule to pop down to Wimbledon for a very interesting interview.Born in Ethiopia to parents Bax Lewis Nomvete and Corah Sibongile Kumalo, little did she know how influential her father would be in the pre Apartheid era. Having dedicated his life to the development of Africa as a recognised economic continent , a host of famous and well know people came through their doors, including a certain “Uncle Thabo” who babysat Pamela and her sister on more than one occasion. “Uncle Thabo” went on to become the President of South Africa. After attending school in Britain, due to political reasons, and with encouragement from her school drama teacher, Pamela got involved in acting with her big break coming on stage with the Bristol Express Theatre Company, starring in a play, originally written for two woman by John Matshikiza, son of Todd Matshikiza, the legendary creator of the musical King Kong. This job launched her into a stage career that spanned ten years including The Royal National Theatre.

In April 1994, after a 15 year absence, Pamela decide to return to South Africa. Various reasons added to her decision to return, the main one being able to vote, see her parents vote as they had been life long contributors to the cause and also to discover the country for herself. She landed a job at the Windybrow Theatre in Johannesburg and met up with John Matshikiza who employed her in her first job in South Africa. She found herself a flat in Hillbrow near the theatre still referring to Hillbrow as Sodom and Gomorrah.

She met a leading actor in local soapy Generations who introduced her to life in Soweto. She spend many days here and this was some of the most peaceful times in her life. Living in Soweto brought her back to her roots and she felt privileged and inspired to have been able to spend time with the people of Soweto. It was at this time that she landed a leading role in Generations with life changingresults turning her into a household name on South African soil. But with fame came sacrifice Her privacy was invaded in every possible way resulting in her isolating herself from the rest of the world. However, she met someone that she liked, never saw him again for a long time, bumped into him in a club, got drunk, went home with him, got involved in a car crash on the way to his pad with a police vehicle, ended up in his bed,got woken up by his girlfriend whom he said had left him,and fell pregnant. Needing a break she returned to London,a familiar and unintrusive place where she could find and be herself again. Sadly she had a miscarriage She blamed herself for this and the fact that the father of the child suggested that she had gone to have the baby aborted didn't make her feel any better about it.Pamela eventually returned to the United Kingdom and has gone from strength to strength. As part of her new lease on life, she has just completed a book about her life. She is also in the process of setting up a organisation in South Africa assisting young children wanting to achieve their full potential through the medium of acting. She has also set her sites on making a film , so much more to come from this amazing woman.

Same - Sex Marriage in the United Kingdom

Same-sex marriage is currently unlawful in the United Kingdom, but there are bills in both the British parliament and the Scottish parliament aiming to make such marriages legal (in England & Wales, and Scotland, respectively). Whilst there are some differences in the laws of marriage in each jurisdiction of the UK, legislation such as the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 expressly prevents same-sex marriage. Since 2005, same-sex couples have been allowed to enter into civil partnerships, a separate union which provides the legal consequences of marriage but not legal recognition as a marriage. In 2006, the High Court rejected a legal action brought by a British lesbian couple who married in Canada, seeking to have their union recognised in the UK, not as a civil partnership, but as a marriage.During the 2010 leadership election of the Labour Party, all candidates said they were in favour of same-sex marriage. The Liberal Democrats, part of the governing coalition, then publicly endorsed same-sex marriage by approving a motion called "Equal Marriage in the United Kingdom" at a conference in Liverpool, which was followed by a public consultation on whether to allow both civil and religious marriage for same-sex couples in 2011.Proposed legislation was brought forward for England and Wales in 2012 which plans to legalise civil and religious same-sex marriage, but does not compel any religious organisation to perform such marriages. Similar legislation for same-sex marriage is currently undergoing public consultation in Scotland, but no plans have been put in place for Northern Ireland. The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill for England and Wales received its first reading on 24 January 2013. On 5 February 2013, the House of Commons debated this bill, and later approved the legislation on second reading in a 400–175 vote.Although supported by some religious groups, such as the Quakers, the policy is controversial with several religious organisations, notably the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England, the latter of which is concerned that the legalisation of same-sex marriage would undermine its status.

Opinion polls have shown varying, but increasing, levels of support for same-sex marriage among Britons.A poll published by YouGov in March 2012 showed that 43% of people supported same-sex marriage whilst 32% supported civil partnerships. 16% were opposed to the recognition of homosexual relations all together. Support was particularly high amongst women, young people, people in Scotland and supporters of the Liberal Democrats. Support was lower amongst the working class, Conservative voters, men and older people. In the same poll, 62% believed that homosexual relationships had the same value as heterosexual ones, but 47% of people supported the right of the Church of England to defend traditional marriage and 37% disagreed.A June 2012 YouGov survey shows highly accepting attitudes of the British population toward LGBT rights. The report found that 71% are in favour of same-sex marriage. Two YouGov polls in December 2012 found that 55% of the population was in favour of introducing same-sex marriage.

The forest sell-off - what's happened so far

The government was planning a massive sell-off of our national forests. We couldn't let that happen. We needed to stop these plans. National treasures like the The Forest of Dean, Sherwood Forest and The New Forest could be sold off. Once they are gone, they will be lost forever. We want our forests to be safe in the hands of the public, managed sustainably, and to last for future generations to enjoy.

The "Save our Forests" campaign

In just one month nearly 80,000 people signed the Save our forests" petition. Other groups began to sound the alarm As well:"This sale was likely to raise a tiny amount but could do immeasurable damage and cost the nation dearly" - The Woodland Trust"The future ownership and management of land that has high public value should be carefully considered. The proposed land sales are driven by the need to generate quick cash, but they must not be at the expense of protecting our natural capital, which is irreplaceable." - RSPB

The media picked up on the story and started to questioning the government’s plans:‘Given the benefits and Defra’s push to get people planting more trees, it seemed strange the government has announced a sell-off of forest and woodland in England to help reduce the country’s budget deficit.’ - The Metro‘In 1992 John Major's Conservative government – also looking to save money in a recession – drew up plans to privatise the Forestry Commission's giant estate. However it was later abandoned following a study by a group of senior civil servants, amid widespread public opposition.’ - The Daily Telegraph‘Many of England's best-loved forests and woodlands may be sold to large landowners, housing developers and international power companies in what could be the UK's greatest change of land ownership since the second world war.’ - The GuardianEnvironment Minister Caroline Spelman, who is the driving force behind the mass sell-off, had lready been forced to respond to this barrage of criticism by environmental organisations, unions and wildlife groups. Her junior minister Jim Paice is the man who came up with the idea. How we won !* Thousands of 38 Degrees members voted to launch the Save Our Forests campaign in October 2010 when the government first announced their plans* Over 500,000 38 Degrees members signed the “Save Our Forests” petition* Over 100,000 38 Degrees members emailed or called their MPs urging them to stop the forest sell off* Hundreds of 38 Degrees members donated to fund a people-powered YouGov poll which found that 84% of the public wanted the forests kept in public hands* Thousands of 38 Degrees members chipped in nearly £60,000 to pay for ads in national newspapers to highlight that 84% of the British public opposed the forest sale.* Over 30 local groups around the country sprung up to campaign to stop the sell-off* Over 220,000 38 Degrees members shared the campaign on Facebook http://www.38degrees.org.uk/

Pretville is Hartiwoord-films se splinternuwe Afrikaanse musiekrolprent.

Global network for SA innovatorsGlobal network for SA innovatorsThe SABLE Accelerator, a global network driven by South African expatriates, was launched in California's Silicon Valley last week to help boost the country's competitiveness and realise a better return on its innovation and entrepreneurship, in both the public and private sectors.

The SABLE (South African Business Link to Experts) Accelerator, launched in association with a number of prominent South African private and public sector partners, was formed by three South Africans living in Silicon Valley and London: Donovan Neale-May, Werner Mansfeld and Kurt Pakendorf.

It features a consulting team of South African expatriates holding senior positions at international technology, life science and agri-business companies; consulting and professional service firms; venture capital and private equity funds; as well as research and academic institutions, including the new venture spawning ground of Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Assisting South African entrepreneursThe international group is dedicated to helping South African entrepreneurs, new venture start-ups, academic institutions and companies commercialise technology innovations, promote and protect intellectual property, fund new business concepts, finance growth, as well as expand into global markets.

"We are building a trusted knowledge network of well-placed and highly connected global South Africans who can make a meaningful difference to the country's brand image and competitive position in world markets," one of the co-founders and managing partners, Donovan Neale-May, said in a statement.

Neale-May runs a global marketing consultancy and is executive director of the Chief Marketing Officer Council, a worldwide membership group of 6 000 corporate marketers controlling more than US$300-billion in annual marketing spend.

‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’ Nelson Mandela

The Facts: 668 Rhinos were poached in South Africa in 2012 compared to 25 in 2002. Rhino horn is currently worth more than gold, platinum and cocaine. The recent increase in rhino poaching is driven by 3 main factors: traditional eastern medicine, political conflict, loss of natural habitat. Rhinos are critically endangered and have been around for about 50 million years and are considered an umbrella species which means that by protecting the rhino we are also protecting numerous other wildlife species such as birds, reptiles, fish, insects, plants and other mammals. Rhinos form part of Southern Africa’s ‘Big Five’, a driving factor behind our tourism which in turn generates income and much needed job creation. It is obvious to see that with such an enormous impact on humans, wildlife and conservation, it is up to US (and that means YOU too) to ensure the survival of this magnificent species.

Background:On having his first child, Chris Daniel was delighted to have the opportunity to teach the next generation all that was so special to him - nature and it's animals. In the search for bed-time stories to start this process, it very quickly became evident that the market is quite sparse in this department. Yes, there are children’s story books featuring animals, but in general, these animals are not behaving like the ones in the wild do...lions don't dance, hippos don't swan dive and antelope don't frolic through the fields! With a lack of any help then from authors and authorities, Chris resumed to read "Hand Stories", a little something he was exposed to as a child from his mother, when for lack of a book, hands were simply joined together to represent the two halves of a book. He longed to give other children the opportunity to learn as his own children continue to. Now with many years of experience behind him in the African bush as a ranger, freelance writing and telling many a story, the skills have been acquired for this process to begin. Bongi's Quest is the first in the series and is an "awareness creator" of the ridiculous slaughter of Rhinos in Africa and with this, the series has begun! For more information on Bongi’s Quest please visit www.africaneducationalstories.co.za or find them on Facebook! In October 2011, Chris and ‘Spoon’ (Sboniso, translator for Bongi’s Quest) cycled for 4 days around the boarders of Kruger National Park, delivering Bongi’s Quest books and awareness workshops to the children living in rural communities on the outskirts of the KNP fences. The reason behind this is because these children are being approached by poachers and bribed for information regarding the activity and whereabouts of rhinos along the KNP fences in exchange for as little as a can of Coke or packet of crisps. Bongi’s Quest has been translated into numerous African and other languages in order to reach children across South Africa and the world. An order of 1000 books written in Chinese has been sent to China encourage children there to care for our rhinos. China is one of the main countries where they have strong traditional beliefs in the medicinal properties of rhino horn which has led to the surge of rhino poaching. This, despite the fact that western science has proven that rhino horn is made up of keratin, the same substance which forms human hair and nails.

Bongi in the UK:After realising the severity of rhino poaching, Hayley Short (a passionate South African living in London) started reading up on the complexities of the issues surrounding the poaching crisis and came across Chris’ project. She liked the project’s long term solution of education, creating awareness and including our planet’s ‘next generation’… our children! Bongi’s Quest is a creative tool which can be used in dynamic ways to bring about change and can be used in conjunction with many other current projects and fundraising efforts to save our rhino. Hayley gave up going to her best friend’s wedding in March this year and instead donated prize money from a competition held by well-known South African personality Darren Scott’s www.ballz.co.za online radio to Bongi’s Quest and also to the Mark Boucher and South African Breweries initiative ‘Our Rhino In Safe Hands’. Hayley recently returned from South Africa with 400 Bongi’s Quest books as well as caps and bracelets. Her aim is to educate children, their families, friends and schools in the UK in the hopes that they will take on their own fundraisers to help the plight of our rhino.

Ubunye-Unity Trust:Ubunye-Unity Trust was set up by a committed group of South Africans in the UK who want to give something back to South Africa. Apart from raising money for new desks and chairs for Muzomuhle school in Diepsloot, Johannesburg in 2011, they have also agreed to support Hayley and Chris with the Bongi’s Quest project. All funds will be directed through the Trusts account (HMRC registration number: XT33757). Within the next 6 months, the Trust will have reached the necessary requirements and will become a registered charity with the UK Charity Commission. The website is www.ubunye-unity.com.

How Can You Get Involved? If you would like to purchase copies of Bongi’s Quest, a Bongi bracelet or cap then please contact Hayley on 07771622570, email [email protected] or Twitter @SaffaHayley. Perhaps you have a child of school-going age who can show the book to his/her teacher or who belongs to a Scouts/Brownies group? Perhaps you may have a few spare hours in the week that you’d like to use in a constructive way? If you are able to volunteer your time by helping create awareness, approaching schools or other youth organisations then please get in touch!

It is one of those questions that always come up in pub quizzes.

Q:‘What is the single largest organ in the human body?’

A: Skin!

Skin? I know, it comes as something of a surprise particularly as half the population probably doesn’t even think about the stuff most of the time. (Yes, guys, that’s you)But maybe you understand now why it makes sense to keep an eye on how it’s doing. But, do real men use cosmetics? Isn’t it a bit girly to apply face creams, anti-aging serums and fragrant body lotions – let alone mascara and lipstick! Well, more of that later. The once female-centred grooming-product industry is now being targeted at males - and it’s making millions.Once upon a time the only way men could get their hands on hand-cream or their foot into the foot spa would be by hanging around the women’s make-up counter pretending to be buying for ‘er indoors. Now everything you might need to keep a body clean, healthy and looking its best around the clock is available for him too.Testosterone-fuelled and with a greater pH level than that of a woman’s, a man’s skin is tougher and thicker and the hair that grows from it has a different chemical composition. As a result, he needs stronger lotions and cleansers to reach deeper into his pores.Yet, many inexpensive brands and items have simply changed the base formulations of their women’s line, added a musk scent and splashed the word ‘Men’ across a masculine-looking bottle. The truth is there are numerous well-designed, formulated and produced men’s cosmetics out there to take care of your skin, give you a better shave and keep your hair looking great. As for 'guyliner' and 'manscara', it's no longer just for stag nights and drag queens. For many 'metrosexual' men, eye-liner, fake tan and spot or blemish concealer is now as much a part of getting ready to go out as having a shower and a shave. We've all got used to seeing Eddie Izzard wearing nail varnish and Russell Brand fluttering his kohl pencil outlined eyelids but curiously, according to research, Welsh men are most likely to wear make-up with 16 per cent in the region confessing to a cosmetics crush.Of those that do wear make-up, one quarter (26 per cent) do so at least once a week and one in eight (13 per cent) do daily. However, they take an average of just 21 minutes to prepare for a night out, half the time it takes the average woman who spends 41 minutes getting ready. The research also showed that men have used budget make-up replacements in order to achieve their desired look. One in 12 (8 per cent) uses toothpaste to dry out their spots, one in 20 (5 per cent) places cucumber over their eyes, and a small number (4 per cent) use sea salt as a body scrub. Ouch!

ABOUT SUPER RUGBYABOUT SUPER RUGBYHISTORYHISTORY

In 1986 NSW and Queensland played against Auckland, Canterbury and Wellington from New Zealand, as well as a composite Fiji side.

For five years the tournament was played, a South Pacific Championship or Super Six, which led to ‘expansion’ when South Africa re-entered the rugby world and it was reborn into the Super 10 in 1993, where it ran until 1995, prior to the game becoming professional.

In 1996 as SANZAR was formed, the Super 12 was created, a professional competition and the first official ‘international domestic’ tournament featuring the strongest teams – which would become franchises – across New Zealand, South Africa and Australia.

Five franchises were created in New Zealand, merging the 26 domestic unions. The Kiwi sides are representative of their 'catchment areas' (the collection of unions that make up the franchise). The three Australian teams were the traditional rugby states of New South Wales and Queensland and a new team from the ACT called the Brumbies. For the first three years of the competition, South Africa determined its sides via qualification in the Currie Cup, with the four semi-finalists from the previous season taking part, before they loosely followed the Kiwi model and created franchises from combined Currie Cup unions.

In 2006 Super 14 came into fruition, with the Western Force and Cheetahs joining the fold, naturally extending the round-robin regular season competition, while the Super Rugby Final’s Series format of the top four playing semi-finals continued.

Effective in 2011, Super Rugby expanded to 15 teams – with the Melbourne Rebels the new franchise - and split into three conferences, each with five teams and based in one of the three nations. At the same time, the regular season expands to 16 matches (8 home, 8 away). Each team will play a double round-robin within its home conference, and play single matches against four teams from each of the other conferences. The change from the inaugural Super Rugby season last year is that the World Cup prevented what is now a formal break of the competition - three weeks off in June for the mid-year Tests. The Super Rugby Final’s Series will expand to six teams, with the conference winners joined by the three non-winners with the most competition points without regard to conference affiliation. The two conference winners with the most competition points receive a first-round bye.In 2011 the Reds became the first Australian team outside the Brumbies to win a title, winning Super Rugby with a victory over the Crusaders in what was dubbed the battle of the hardship teams - with Queensland hit by floods and Christchurch rocked by a earthquake which disrupted both team's season. The following year the Chiefs claimed the crown with a win over the Sharks in Waikato, the third New Zealand Conference team to win Super Rugby.
