At a meeting of the Bowls Australia Board on 29 October 2010 it was resolved that the implementation of the recent amendments to the Laws of the Sport of Bowls, as determined by

World Bowls at their meeting in Delhi in October, will be as of 1 January 2011 in Australia. Due to the seasonal nature of our sport and the variances across Australia, finding a date which ‘suits all’ is impossible. Therefore Bowls Australia looked at the ‘cleanest’ date available for the changeover, noting that the majority of STAs were keen to see the changes brought in as soon as practicable.Unfortunately in South Australia this means that changes will be implemented during the current pennant season and other events that may have commenced prior to the implementation date.An article on Page 27 provides an outline of the process and more information on the specific changes to the Laws of the Sport of Bowls. In an exciting initiative, Bowls SA will be conducting an Education Forum for Green keepers and Club Administrators during the 2010/11 MGA Men’s Country Carnival. The aim of the forum is to provide an opportunity for those responsible for green’s maintenance at clubs to receive relevant information from experienced Green keepers and have the opportunity to discuss any issues that they have. This is an outstanding opportunity, especially for Green keepers and club volunteers from the country, and I encourage clubs to nominate representatives to attend. More details about the forum are in the ‘Bowls SA Update’ on Page 6. Bowls SA has joined the Facebook social networking phenomenon and is looking for ‘friends’ and keen for you to ‘like’ us. Millions of users across the world interact with their friends on Facebook everyday and Bowls SA will use the site to keep members updated on what is happening in the

world of Bowls. More information is available on Page 6. I am also pleased to announce that Bowls SA’s new Marketing Manager Jessica Taylor commenced work on 29 November. This is her first edition of the Bowler and I am sure she will be a valuable acquisition to the organisation. On a lighter note, a bit of office banter resulted in a Bowls SA staff team entering the recent Open Fours State Event. Experienced and talented bowlers, Rhys Taylor, Travis Moll and Kelli Wray had the pleasure of carrying the ‘weak link’ who was strategically hidden at Two. The bowling standard left a lot to be desired and the internal sledging was rife, but it was a very enjoyable, although unsuccessful day on the green and gave me a great insight to a State Event.

Finally, the Chalks have broken the duck. At 0-6 the situation looked dire, but some fresh blood in the team made all the difference and a win was finally achieved. Hopefully it won’t be the last.Wishing all Members a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year.

Regards

President’s Message

At the recent Bowls Australia Annual General Meeting Victoria’s Joe Aarons OAM was elected to succeed South Australia’s Brian Marsland OAM as President of Bowls Australia. On behalf of Bowls

SA, congratulations Brian on your enormous contribution over the last four years, your strength, dignity and vision have served the sport well. Congratulations also to South Australia’s Geoff Nethercott who was elected as Vice president. It is that crazy time of the year again when it is all hustle and bustle to get everything done before Christmas and the New Year. The bowls season is well on its way with many State events already played and the draws for the Men’s Country Carnival included in this edition. The Men’s Country Carnival Singles, Pairs and Fours events remain the star attraction for country bowlers with a noticeable increase in Pairs and Fours entries this year. Entries for the Women’s Country Carnival close at Bowls SA on 17 January 2011 so please make sure your Club’s entries arrive on time. I hope to see you there!Congratulations to all the winners of the State events completed this year.

What a thrill when Holdfast Bay’s Riina Bradbrook won the Women’s National Champion of Champion Singles title in early November. Well done Riina, and best wishes and good bowling at the World Champion of Champion Singles titles in Hong Kong next year. Congratulations also to the father and son team of Gary and Josh Thompson who came very close to winning the Men’s National Champion of Champion Pairs title. Well done. The story is on page 12.While the entries for the inaugural Open Fours event were disappointing, my personal experience was of an enjoyable challenge, and I’m confident that the event will grow each year. It is a departure from the usual State event in permitting the four to be made up of any combination. A report is on page 10.The Men’s and Women’s Prestige Medleys saw Region 10 Metro East victorious, taking out both titles. On behalf of all participants, thank you to President Wayne Prosser and members of the Payneham Bowling Club for their hospitality and use of their facilities, and to Bowls SA Events and Competition Coordinator Rhys Taylor for managing the events. As the Festive season draws near I would like to take the opportunity to wish you all the ‘Compliments of the Season’ and hope you have a safe and happy Christmas with family and friends. Best wishes for the New Year and good health to all.

UpdateGotta Getta Group LotteryWe are pleased to report that, despite a short time frame, the Gotta Getta Group Green Energy Lottery has been a great success. The lottery was drawn on 9 December and the lucky winner’s names were published in The Advertiser on 13 December 2010 and are available on the Bowls SA website www.bowlssa.com.au

The overall reaction from the 35 participating metropolitan Clubs and members has been extremely positive with ticket sales generating over $63,000 for the sport, with participating Member Clubs receiving over $50,000. This is a significant injection of funds into the sport which will assist participating Clubs with major projects.

Congratulations, also to the three Bowling Clubs, Para Hills, Sturt and Blackwood who, through a major effort, sold the most tickets per member, securing for their Club a Stainless Steel Outdoor Kitchen valued at $5,000 each. Taking Charge - Super Series FinalAscot Park’s ‘The Chargers’ have taken out the Metro Final of the Freemason’s Night Owls Super Series after a very successful day at Edwardstown on Sunday 28 November.Following regional nights at Grange, Modbury and Ascot Park during the previous week, the top teams from each night were invited to attend the Super Series Final and compete for some great cash prizes, provided through the generous sponsorship of the Freemasons.

Twelve teams were greeted to blustery conditions at Edwardstown, with all set to play three games of six ends to determine the winner. After two matches, only three sides were two game winners, ‘The Misfits’ (Semaphore), ‘Good Vibrations’ (Ascot Park) and ‘Bias 4’ (West Lakes). However, in Round 3 these sides lost their matches, to give the event seven two game winners.

Following a 9-2 win in their last game against previous Freemason’s

NIGHT OWLS | SUPER SERIES

Night Owls Super Series Champions,’ ‘Chariots of Fire’ (West Lakes), ‘The Chargers’ were declared the winners by two shots. West Lakes ‘Bias 4’ were awarded the runner-up prize, following a count back after finishing with two wins and seven shots, tied with Ascot Park’s ‘Good Vibrations’.

The week starting 29 November was set for the country event of the Freemason’s Night Owls Super Series, but unfortunately due to the timing, the only event held was at McLaren Vale with 14 teams in attendance.

Bowls SA has postponed the other country events until late February 2011. This will hopefully allow time for an increase in entries and country Clubs will receive promotional details in coming weeks. For further details, Clubs can contact Rhys Taylor at Bowls SA 8234 7544.

Brighton’s Jeff Aworth has combined with team mates Geoff Collins, Ben Hastie and Jocelyn Hastie to take out the inaugural Bowls SA Open Fours in a nail biting finale at Holdfast Bay on Sunday 5 December.

After a decline in the numbers of participants over the last few years in the Over 60s Fours events, the Match and Program Committee decided to trial a new event on the Bowls SA State Event Calendar – the Open Fours.

As the name suggests, the event was open gender as well as open to members from different clubs to enter, enabling members from across the State to enter a team and play together. Teams from Jervois, Clare and the Riverland along with Morphett Vale and Reynella joined metropolitan Adelaide teams to do battle through 11 sections.

There was even a guest appearance from a staff team from Bowls SA, which made a fleeting and highly unsuccessful appearance in the first round.

FOURSOPE

N

Sectional play kicked off on 21 November with 176 bowlers enjoying perfect bowling weather at Modbury, Grange and Prospect/Broadview Bowling Clubs.

After a solid day on the green with three games of 15 ends, the 11 sectional winners progressed to Hawthorn Bowling Club on 28 November for knockout play. Following wins to Payneham’s Luke Pietersma, Hawthorn’s Marc Evans and Clare’s Brenton Brown in the morning session, the Quarter finalists were decided.

High profiled matchups saw Aworth defeat Lockley’s Ian Miller, Evans defeat the awesome foursome from Adelaide consisting of Thulborn, Thulborn, Davis and McPharlin while Clare’s Brown defeated Pietersma and Gary Benveniste accounted for Somerton’s Paul Higgs.

The Semi-finals were set for Holdfast Bay and after the Brighton four accounted for Clare’s Brenton Brown 21-12 in the morning Semi-final, they saw themselves set for a

duel with the Adelaide-Hope Valley combination of Scott Hocking, brothers Tim and Steve Hicks and Gary Benveniste after they earlier defeated Marc Evans 20-9.

The Final saw Aworth take the early advantage and he looked very comfortable with a nine shot lead with five ends to go. The Benveniste four however had other ideas and remarkably got back to 13-13 after 17 ends. Down game with one bowl remaining, Benveniste had a chance to clinch victory, however he fell agonisingly short and after an umpire’s measure, the shot was awarded to the Brighton foursome by the barest of margins.

In a day of special occasions, not only was it the first State title won by a Brighton player since the unification of the RSABA and SAWBA, but Jocelyn Hastie also became the first female player to take out a Bowls SA Open State Event. A huge effort!!

COVER | STORY

GOLD WITH A SILVER LININGNational Champion of Champions

The National Champion of Champion Titles contested in North Launceston in November 2010 showcased many of the country’s foremost bowlers and among the contestants were our six South Australian competitors. Within this sextet were the father and son combination of Gary and Josh Thompson and mother and daughter pairing of Josie Wright and Penny Landherr. In the Women’s events Riina Bradbrook was to compete in the Singles and Landherr and Wright in the Pairs. In the Men’s draw Thompson was to play in the Singles and would also lead for 16 year old son Josh in the Pairs.

The game could have been no closer as the Pairs went into the final end 1-1. It was this end that will remain in the minds of those fortunate to witness some amazing play. Down on the head Thompson Snr took the kitty into the ditch and sat shot five inches away. When the Skips crossed over it appeared that the South Australians would come away with a famous victory. However, on the green were two touchers, one a Northern Territory bowl some metres from the ditch and the second a South Australian bowl nearer to the bank. Northern Territory skip Freedman played a

Going into the event Bradbrook and Thompson were South Australia’s reigning Women’s and Men’s Bowlers of the Year and were expected to perform well in their disciplines. Landherr needs no introduction, as an Australian Squad member, she has become a household name amongst the bowling fraternity. Previously she has spoken to us of the family support which was an important ingredient in the early years of her bowling career and one can only imagine her thoughts as she Skippered her mum Josie at the Champion of Champion event.

Josh Thompson, at such a tender age and Skipping his father for the first time on the national stage, was about to have the experience of his short bowling life. Even the great writers of our age would have had difficulty

scripting the third and last tie break end of the Men’s Pairs Final. Many who witnessed the last six bowls considered the end to be among the best in Champion of Champion history. But we are getting ahead of ourselves and it is worthwhile reflecting on the games and the fortunes of our South Australian bowlers as the tournament unfolded.

In the Women’s Pairs Landherr and Wright found the going tough and bowed out after the first three preliminary games, failing to win a match. Thompson Snr played well in two of three games, taking Aaron Appleby (NSW) and Robert Chesher (ACT) to tie breaks, but also retired after the first three games in the Men’s Singles. In the Men’s Pairs the father and son combination began well, with a victory over Bob Reynolds and Gary Corey (NSW) in straight sets 10-4, 7-5 before winning rounds two and three over Peter Ward and Bill Mitilinios (QLD) and David Maloney and Damon Jeffery (ACT) respectively. Both games went to three end tie breaks and the South Australian duo took care of business in 4-0 and 6-0 tie break wins. Going through undefeated, the pair were confident going into the Final against Ryan Freedman and Dave Billington from the Northern Territory and did all but win what was a great game. After going down 13-4 in the first set, Thompson and Thompson recovered to win the second 8-7 and force a three end tie break.

miracle bowl taking his available bowl into the ditch that sat three inches from the kitty as shot. One can only imagine what was going through the mind of 16 year old Skip Josh Thompson. By all accounts he had matched it with older and more experienced opposition the entire tournament and was often brilliant. Faced with such a situation the young player could easily have faltered but instead he kept his head, taking his own toucher into the ditch and onto his own second wood. Unfortunately the bowl bounced to the outside leaving him one down. Josh is another of the young breed of State bowlers who is impacting in major events and the experience, along with support from his family, will hold him in good stead as he moves on.

In the Women’s Singles Riina Bradbrook was drawn in what was termed the “Pool of Death”. To make the Final she needed to firstly contend with Commonwealth Games representative, Claire Duke and after splitting the two regulation sets went down 3-2 in the three end tie break with Duke securing the win with her final bowl. Not deterred the South Australian decided that she would “enjoy the experience” and do the best that she could during the remainder of the tournament. It was an attitude which would carry her through to the Final. Straight set victories over Marilyn Peddell (QLD) and Maggie Johnston (ACT) was the key to gaining her spot. Duke was beaten in her third game and Bradbrook walked onto the green for a Final game against Bev Scott (WA).

Page 13: SA Bowler Dec10-Jan11

Gary and Josh Thompson

As nervous as she had ever been, the South Australian, having lost the first set 6-9, drew on all her experience taking out the second set 13-5 before powering to a 5-0 win in the three end tie break.Bradbrook’s form in winning the Women’s Singles and the 11 months in the run up to the tournament had been nothing short of spectacular. At 63 years of age she could equally have been sitting in her lounge room reflecting on past glories and there have been many.

From January this year when she was successful in the Holdfast Bay Club Singles this talented lady has been unstoppable. To win the State Singles, Metro Singles and SA Champion of Champion Singles along with a Silver medal in the National Side’s Championship is an achievement in its own right. To cap the year off with the National Singles title takes her to the next tier of experience. Apart from personal satisfaction, the rewards of such a win are many, not least the donning of the famous Green and Gold uniform for the International Champion of Champion tournament in Hong Kong in 2011.

At a time in our sport when much of the emphasis is on our junior development it is interesting to look back on Bradbrook’s career as a bowler. With both husband Ian and son Stephen bowling at Ascot Park Bowling Club in 1989 it was the legendary Paul Richards who whetted her appetite as she sat on the sidelines watching her son take in the rudiments of lawn bowls. The late champion remains the greatest influence on her career and

as mentor gave his pupil not only the inspiration to play but also to win. In 1994-95 when, with June Dahlitz, Bradbrook won the State Pairs, Richards was on the sideline in support. It is an image that remains as a powerful vision in her bowling life and one reason for her hard nosed approach to the game.Bradbrook is the archetypal Singles player, uncompromising and with a bit of the mongrel about her. When asked why she enjoys the individual discipline she answered very quickly. “In Singles the responsibility is on me. No-one is responsible for me and I am not responsible for anyone.” This attitude along with a confidence in her own ability and a knowledge that she “doesn’t have to prove herself to anybody” give some insight into why she is such a fierce competitor.

Many fellow bowlers may not know that she has represented Australia at the 30 foot mat indoor version of the game picking up two Gold Medals in the Women’s Pairs against New Zealand. There is also an ethereal side to her personality and a visualisation of the numbers 11 and 11 which appear frequently in her life. Over the last four years she has often looked at a clock at exactly 11.11 am or pm or for no reason at all gazed at a rink score which shows the teams at 11.11. It is an unexplainable set of circumstances but the numbers take on even more significance after her most meritorious win on 11/11/2010.

A veteran of 179 State games and 13 consecutive National Round Robins, Bradbrook is not yet ready to pack up her bowls cloth. She has been a member of home club Holdfast Bay for 17 years and is proud of her long tenure. Her aims for the future include a desire to represent South Australia in over two hundred games and to take on an active role as a State Selector at the end of her career. GOLD WITH A SILVER LINING

November has seen High Performance getting ready for a number of up and coming series. Under 18 Quad SeriesThe Under 18 teams have been selected for the Quad Series to be held at Warilla Bowling Club, 11 - 14 January 2011. Selection for this event was of a development nature, based on a Bowls SA High Performance objective to broaden the base of players who will be under consideration for the Under 18 Nationals in September 2011 and longer term selections.

This is a wonderful opportunity for players to experience strong competition and we wish them every success.Loy Carroll and Mulga Cup State Selectors have named the Men’s and Women’s State sides to compete in the upcoming Test series against Victoria at the Moama Bowling Club. The five Test series will be played over the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 2-5 January 2011

The Series offers a wonderful opportunity to see players competing at interstate level, providing Selectors with valuable information in their considerations for the Australian Sides Championships and the Super 6 Series to be held in Newcastle in April 2011. We wish our State sides every success in this event.

High PerformanceBowls Australia Elite Coach WorkshopAn elite coach workshop was held by Bowls Australia at the Holdfast Bay Bowling Club on 13 and 14 November. The workshop provided an opportunity for Bowls Australia coaches to interact with current and potential high performance coaches. Coaches who attended included Dave Stockham, Faye Luke, Trevor Gregory, Leon Crane, Steve Grant, Lynton Modra, Di Green and Kane Coulls.

A key message emanating from the workshop was the degree of fitness required to compete at the national level over a two week period in difficult conditions and environments. Also the need for players to work hard to lift their performance and skill level above other players striving for the same opportunity, and the importance of involving your coach in your game and having a plan and routine that gets your mental game organised.

Players attending the camp were given fitness testing, skills sessions that were statistically recorded, and skill and stamina tests to see how they bowled under duress. In addition, there were presentations on diet, sports psychology and the pathways to represent Australia.

This workshop was the first of many opportunities planned for the Bowls SA High Performance program, working closely with Bowls Australia over the next two years as they prepare for the 2011 Asia Pacific Championships and the 2012 World Bowls Championship.

HARVEY JOLLY SINGLESGrange’s Ryan Digby has taken out the Bob Pope Perpetual Trophy as winner of the 2010 Bowls SA Open Singles following a nail biting win over Hawthorn’s Marc Evans at Payneham.Following metropolitan sectional play and knockouts, nine metropolitan and seven country qualifiers met at Payneham on Sunday 14 November for the final 16 of the event.Round 1 sectional action saw Waikerie’s Garry Pursche slightly dent the chances of Adelaide’s Mike Hocking 21-12 while Digby, Evans and Millicent’s John Scudds recorded solid first up wins.

The all important second round saw Pursche cruising in his section with a 21-7 win over Murray Bridge’s David Hein while on B Green, John Scudds and Craig Mills were putting on a show of class. With Scudds playing like he should have been wearing the green and gold, he bolted to an early 11-0 lead while Mills, who wasn’t playing bad at all, was wondering what he could do. Persistence soon paid off and when Mills hit the front late, it looked as though he wouldn’t be headed again. However a counter attack from Scudds proved pivotal as he ran out 21-18 winner and literally clinched the section. Ryan Digby flexed his proverbial muscles in the battle of the youngsters; defeating Matt Northcott 21-12 while Marc Evans’ 21-7 win over Phil Spiers all but guaranteed him section four. Final round proceedings saw Digby and Scudds complete the day unbeaten and book their place in Monday’s Semi-finals. However a couple of twists were yet to come. On B Green, Clearview’s Alan Atkinson led Marc Evans 14-0 before Evans took a brief recess to assess the sectional proceedings. Atkinson battled on to defeat Evans 21-14, however Evans’ early win over Spiers secured him the section on a countback. While on A Green, Mike Hocking defeated David Hein 21-6

and then sat and watched as Ian Miller defeated Gary Pursche 21-13 to hand Hocking the section on a shots countback from Pursche.Monday greeted the Semi-finalists with perfect conditions as Evans did battle with Millicent’s John Scudds, while it was a case of the Wiley fox vs the young pup with Hocking doing battle with Digby. On the outside rink, Marc Evans bolted early and was never headed, running out a 25-13 winner over John Scudds while Ryan Digby was all over it early against Hocking, clinching a berth in his first State Final with a good 25-18 victory. The Final was set with Evans the slight favourite against the Under 25 representative. However it was Digby who again started stronger and snuck out to an early lead. With the breeze picking up in the afternoon, Evans plugged his way back into the match and got back on evens.Following a series of ones, the scores hit 22-22 and on the penultimate end Evans appeared from the crowd to have shot - however not to be. Digby taking a 23-22 lead. Playing away from the club, Evans again appeared to be holding shot with his first bowl however, with one bowl in hand, the marker indicated that Digby held two with jack high bowls. Evans’ attempt with his last to rest the bowls with weight was unsuccessful and duly handed Grange’s Ryan Digby the 2010 Open Singles title. The Final day was marked under the watchful eye of Sandy Wallace and Pat Parish and a big thank you must also go to Joan Prosser and Ron Peters for officiating as umpires. To all clubs, umpires and markers who officiated during the four days of the event, thankyou also for giving up your time.

Metro East RedemptionFollowing a heartbreaking loss in the 2009 final, Metro East bounced back in the best possible way with a nail biting one shot win over Yorke Peninsula to claim the 2010 Men’s Prestige Medley. In an unconvincing section win, Metro East started slowly with a loss to eventual wooden spooners Eastern in Round 1, a two shot win over Upper Northern in Round 2 and a draw with Metro West in Round 4.

At the completion of Round 4, Metro East sat atop the table in section B with 29 points, but only one point ahead of both Fleurieu & KI and Upper Northern. Round 5 action saw Metro East defeat Fleurieu & KI by 10 shots, thanks to a 23-8 Fours win from Wayne Prosser over Heath Raymond – Metro East securing 10 points.

While all this was happening, Metro West were causing the upset of the day with a 14 shot win over Upper Northern to hand their metropolitan counterparts a berth in the final with Peter Gageler’s 19-7 win over Trevor Gill making the difference.

While all the excitement was around section B, Yorke Peninsula plodded through section A undefeated to gain favouritism for the final match. With only two rink losses and two rink draws over the five minor round matches, the YP boys, led by the undefeated Pairs combination of Ken Wilcox and Daniel Glazbrook, finished 20 points ahead of their closest rival, South Eastern.

In the Final, Yorke Peninsula started strongly and at the half way mark of matches, had a lead of 19 shots. However, led by a charge by the Pairs and Fours, Metro East hit back strongly. With the Pairs combination of Michael Lodge and Gary Miles easily accounting for Ken Wilcox and Daniel Glazbrook 17-7, the confidence of the

Prestige Medley | Men’s & Women’s

Back to BackMetro East have taken out the 2010 Women’s Prestige Medley for the second consecutive year after they defeated Yorke Peninsula by eight shots in the Final at Payneham.

In a repeat of the Men’s Final the week earlier, the Metro side started slowly, allowing the Yorke Peninsula girls to take a slight lead before Metro East powered home thanks to a 22-9 Triples win by Laini Murray, Judy Brooks and Denise Caulfield. This topped off a huge two days for the Triples combination in which they went through undefeated and scored impressive 27-14 and 21-15 wins on the tail end of the minor rounds.

For Yorke Peninsula, Di Milner and Annette Rowntree scored a 16-11 win

2010 Men’s Prestige Medley winners - Metro East

Metro boys grew and with the Four Skippered by Wayne Prosser scoring the last seven shots to defeat Kadina’s Bruce Hines 12-10, it looked promising for a win.

Steve Eichenberger had other ideas however, and his Triple broke out to a 19-9 lead over Luke Pietersma with two ends to go. This gave Metro East a two shot lead overall going into the 19th end of the Triples and with a one to Metro East on the 19th, three shots was always going to be tough. Eichenberger had a chance to trail the white with his two bowls for the draw but to no avail as YP could only manage a two, handing Metro East the top prize by one solitary shot.

In the playoff for third and fourth, South Eastern defeated Lower North by 21 shots to claim third prize with Ralph Stafford’s 26-7 win over Neville Atchison the highlight.

The final prize of the event went to Upper Northern, who claimed the “Winners of the Rest” prize with a 30 shot win over Metro North. Rob Perry Skippered the Triples to a great 33-9 win over Ian Fyfe while Trevor Gill’s Four gets a special mention. After dropping a seven and an eight to trail 4-18, the Upper North Four then proceeded to score 2, 5, 3, 7 and 1 to lead 22-18 and eventually run out 27-19 winners over Geoff Nethercott.

in the Pairs to give them a slight look in, however, Sandy Wallace and Merrilyn Lovelock played out a draw in the Fours to ensure the back to back victory for the Metro East girls therefore securing the Men’s and Women’s double for Region 10.

In the playoff for third, Metro West was too strong for 2009 Runner-up Metro North with a 10 shot win. Di Green’s 19-8 win over Penny Dunbar in the Pairs was the difference. Riina Bradbrook scored a 19-15 win over Vonnie Secker in the Triples while Cherie Morgan scored two points for the Northerners with a 14-9 win over West Lakes’ Maxine Savage.

The consolation prize for “Winner of the Rest” went to Eyre Peninsula after they defeated Fleurieu & KI by 20 shots in the playoff for 11th and 12th. Ceduna’s Eileen Fitzgerald can be thanked for the win, with a classic 27-8 Triples victory while Jackie Field and Pam Edmunds scored a 11-7 win over Valda Bartlett in the Pairs.

Australian Open Qualifying |Singles & PairsAscot Park’s Liz Gooda and Lockleys Peter Thaler will represent South Australia in two disciplines at the 2011 Australian Open following the SA Singles and Pairs Qualifying Events held at Marion and Hawthorn in early November. The Singles event saw Marion host 12 sections of men on Monday with a batch of fresh faces and repeat qualifiers gaining one of seven spots available.Automatic qualifiers from their sections saw Under 35 Singles champion Brady Slater and Kapunda’s Ron Turnbull book their spot at Darebin from February 13.The remaining 10 sections played a round of post sectional knockouts with straight sets wins going to Edwardstown’s Danny Deed over Jono Voigt and Peter Thaler over Warooka’s Maurice Bennett. Ian Miller booked a return trip with a 6-7, 13-0, 4-0 win over Marion’s Russell Brown, Brett Hurrell continued his good form with a 3-10, 9-4, 5-0 win over Blake Fiebig while Nathan Pedersen, fresh from his defeat of world number 1 Safuan Said in 2010, will look for another target after defeating Kevin Fuss 13-4, 6-9, 7-0.

Tuesday saw the women’s event held at West Lakes with Prue Goonan securing a 13-3, 16-3 win over Jackie Barber, while Cassandra Harvey defeated Jan Pascoe 10-4, 7-5 and Liz Gooda claimed victory over Penny Landherr 9-5, 6-5. Round 2 action saw Prue Goonan defeating Sarah Voigt, Liz Gooda defeating Hope Valley’s Ester Allan 10-4, 13-9 and Cassandra Harvey with an imposing 8-7, 13-4 win over State junior counterpart Renee McPharlin. In section two Danielle Fuss was going about her business with wins over Ester Allan and Penny Landherr. This set up a tussle with the also undefeated Liz Gooda with the winner taking all. However, after an explosive start Liz’s experience showed and she ran out a 9-4, 11-2 winner. Prue Goonan and Cassandra Harvey both claimed straight sets victories in round 3 to ensure they joined Liz Gooda to be the three SA qualifiers for Darebin.

The following week the Hawthorn Bowling Club hosted the Men’s and Women’s Pairs events. The three Singles qualifiers were all drawn in the same section of the women’s Pairs and the scene was set for some interesting results. Liz Gooda and Jackie Jacobs started well with a solid 11-7, 10-5 win over Prue Goonan and Danielle Fuss while Vicki Arbon and Jackie Barber defeated the Northern Territory’s Sam Whelan and Somerton’s Cassandra Harvey 13-3, 9-5. Wins to Jacobs and Gooda, in tie-breaks over Barber and Harvey, sealed them Section 1.

Section 2 saw U18 National Championship Gold Medallists and Australian U18 Squad members Breeanna Dickson and Renee McPharlin team up. After a close 7-7, 6-5 win in round 1, the girls confidently defeated Jackie Gardiner and Di Green 8-6, 10-7 in round 2. A minor hiccup in round 3 saw the girls defeated by U18 Squad members Emma Hughes and Sarah Voigt 10-8, 6-10, 0-7; however their straight sets win over Gardiner and Green got them through to a Tuesday morning knockout with Jackie Jacobs and Liz Gooda.Eight sections of men were also vying for the four SA Pairs qualifiers spots.Highlights of round 1 saw all eight section winners victorious including Adam Forbes and Scott Thulborn, with the latter leaving Payneham’s Gary Miles and Luke Pietersma in disbelief after a 11-0, 18-2 thumping. Thulborn was absolutely dominant in the first set with his last bowl, showing the form that has earned him a third spot for SA at the Loy Carroll Test series. Solid wins to Blake Fiebig, Duane Edwards and Brett Hurrell highlighted the standard on display. Adam Forbes and Scott Thulborn claimed two from two in round 2 while Lockleys Peter Gageler and Peter Thaler were awesome in a 20-2, 22-3 victory over Rod Dockery

from Wallaroo. Leith Harvey assured that Matt Northcott and Nathan Pedersen had no chance of winning their section with Ian Miller and Victoria’s Stan Meale looking the front runner in Section 1. All other section winners went two from two apart from Brad Jansen and Brett Hurrell, who were defeated 5-13, 15-5, 4-0 by Marion’s Gerry Clarke and Ken Holtham. At the conclusion of round 3 the eight Pairs through to the knockouts were Ian Miller and Stan Meale, Darren Niblett and Duane Edwards, Peter Thaler and Peter Gageler, Adam Forbes and Scott Thulborn, Scott Colvill and Steve Packer, country combination John Van Der Wyst (Renmark RSL) and John Threlfall (Moonta), Ben Johnson and Blake Fiebig, and Brad Jansen and Brett Hurrell. Two men’s knockouts were played on the Monday night with Gageler and Thaler achieving straight sets win over Forbes and Thulborn 13-4, 10-8, while Johnson and Fiebig scored a hard fought 8-6 first set win before a 15-5 win against Jansen and Hurrell in the second. The following morning Pair’s knockouts continued between Liz Gooda and Renee McPharlin, while Colvill/Packer took on Van Der Wyst/Threlfall and Niblett/Edwards fought Miller and Meale. After dropping the first set 4-6, Niblett and Edwards took the second 15-5 before taking the tie-break 2-1 to secure a win. Van Der Wyst and Threlfall were dominant from the start, defeating the Happy Valley pairing 13-2, 6-4. In the final match of the morning Ascot Park’s Jackie Jacobs and Liz Gooda continued their good form over Breeanna Dickson and Renee McPharlin, taking the match 12-2, 10-7.Following two weeks of qualifying, a strong SA contingent will now head to Darebin for the Australian Open commencing 13 February. The Australian Open Triples qualifying event commences 10 January 2011 at the Holdfast Bay Bowling Club.

the laws have changedDear bowler,

During the biennial World Bowls council meeting in October, a number of rule changes were made to the Laws of the Sport of Bowls – Crystal Mark Edition, many of those which were at the behest of Bowls Australia.

In late 2009, Bowls Australia finalised its submission to the game’s governing body concerning the Laws of the Sport of Bowls – Crystal Mark Second Edition after canvassing the opinions of all registered members during a five month consultation process engaging clubs, districts, zones, groups, state and territory associations and the National Officiating Committee.

As was the edict of the review, rule changes were only submitted with the provision they would benefit all bowlers, not just one particular state or territory association.

Upon receiving the final approval in October, Bowls Australia was given the task of selecting an implementation date, which was directed by World Bowls to be any date, but no later than April 1, 2011.

Each state and territory was consulted on their preference, which was taken into consideration, but due to the seasonal nature of our sport and the variances across Australia, finding a date which suited all was impossible.

Therefore, Bowls Australia looked at the cleanest date available for the changeover, noting that the majority of STAs were keen to see the changes brought in as soon as practicable.

Subsequently, the Bowls Australia board resolved the Australian implementation date would occur on January 1, 2011 following World Bowls’ directive that each member national authority change uniformly.

Accordingly, the new law book will be released by mid-December 2010, and will be available for sale via your state or territory association or the Bowls Australia e-store.

A full list of the rule changes will also be found on the BA website at the time the new law book is released, including a summary sheet detailing the major changes, improvements to the format of the book and where to find information which was previously (and illegally) placed as a domestic regulation.

The process has been long, however, a fantastic result has been achieved for Australian bowlers.

We hope you enjoy the improvements made under the new Laws of the Sport of Bowls – Crystal Mark Second Edition and wish you the best of luck on the green.

South Australia has a rich background in the sport of Lawn Bowls. From the first official game played at Kapunda in 1876 the sport has blossomed into a pastime enjoyed by young and old in both city and country areas throughout the State. In the leafy suburb of Unley, and as part of the Unley Oval sporting complex, sits the Sturt Bowling Club which is the fourth oldest in South Australia. Formed in 1903 the Club is now 107 years old and on 13 November 2010 members bowled in Club colours for the very first time in Saturday Pennants. The inaugural Club Champion, C. G. Curr may well have frowned upon such levities but the current

members are excited at the prospect of the famous double blue colours emblazoned on their recently printed bowl’s stickers. Below the ornate shirt badge is the small embroidered insignia- Est. 1903.Originally known as New Parkside Oval the land was donated by Mr Edward Isaac Trimmer for recreation and sporting pursuits and was officially renamed by Lady Kintore in 1892.

The Sturt Electorate Cricket Club became the governing body of the

oval in 1897, presiding over the various Sturt sporting bodies, cricket, football, tennis croquet, lacrosse, baseball and later bowls. The founding committee of the bowling club commenced the laying of the original green in 1903 and on Saturday 5 March 1904, and with 30 members present, the Sturt Bowling Green was officially opened by the Hon Mr John Greeley Jenkins, the Premier of South Australia. From that point the Club entered the Pennant competition and in 1907 acetylene gas lamps were installed to cater for night bowls. In 1910 these were replaced with electric lights and Sturt was one of the city hosts for the second Country Round Robin competition held in 1927.

The following year the Club was chosen as the venue for the annual Country v Metro match which was held under lights as part of the Easter tournament.

Among prominent sporting identities who were members of the Club in those early years were Victor York Richardson, considered by many to be South Australia’s greatest ever all round sports man, Gil Langley M.P. and Gordon “Grassy Green”.

This sporting tradition continues into the present day Night Owls competitions with the names of Nathan Bassett, Scott Stevens and Crow’s Football Manager Graeme Dunstan among those who compete weekly.

There have been many champion bowlers associated with the Club over the years and the most prominent of these is Dr Jack Petchell whose exploits are legendry in the clubhouse which is named after him. Nine times Club Singles Champion, his greatest achievement

came in the 1946 Australian titles where he took out the Singles crown. Below a photograph in the clubrooms sits a plaque commemorating this achievement and it is also interesting to note that members of the Petchell family are to this day active participants in the night competition

On the same wall are two original honours boards and a small glass trophy cabinet which contains a silver cup, an acetylene gas connection and two wooden lawn bowls. The inscription beneath reads - “Australia versus the Rest of the World” and is in reference to a competition between club members of all nationalities who for many years battled annually for what was a wonderful trophy.

If you have the good fortune to converse with Club Historian, Leo Fogarty, you will be impressed with his knowledge of the early history of the Club. You will smile as he regales you with a story of wooden seats purloined from the oval for the lining of a well which was to be built to supply water for the club. Unable to get the required allowance from the committee for the timber needed, a resourceful club member took matters into his own hands and construction of the well was duly completed. He will also tell you of a strange fence fire which opened up access to the oval and gave a great view of the football from the premises and he will talk of a time capsule which has sat buried for 25 years beneath a fountain by the work shed.

A CLUB ON THE MOVE JOHN BEVIN

New shirts for Sturt

Like so many metropolitan clubs, Sturt has gone through some lean times in recent years. Dwindling membership and competition from other recreational pursuits are common problems facing most committees in this day and age. In 1965 the Sturt Women’s Bowling Club was formed with membership limited to 50 and the Women’s side of the club achieved Pennant success as part of SAWBA from 1968 until 1995. Eventually after struggling for some time the Women’s Club ceased in 2000 through lack of members.

However the Men’s club continues and with two teams in both the Wednesday and Saturday Pennant competitions and 26 Night Owls sides turning up twice a week the future looks bright for one of our State’s oldest bowling clubs.

Daryl West’s tenure as Club Member and President is almost as short as the bowling club’s history is long. He had been tied up in sports for many years but in October 2009 was recovering from illness and looking forward to a quiet existence when a call came through from

good friend John Venning. The local bowling club needed new players to fill a second Pennant side and so Daryl became a member whose first responsibility was as barbecue cook at Tuesday Night Owls. From that point he quickly graduated to Secretary before filling in as Acting President after the May 2010 AGM. A second meeting confirmed his Presidency for 2010/11 and with the support of his Committee the Club is moving forward at some speed. New uniforms and coaching programs are just the first steps in taking the Club to a new level.

It has been interesting talking with a President who has had such little time in our sport. Not bound by the conventions that would normally guide a man in his position he sees all things as attainable and we will leave you with his comments.“The future of the Sturt Bowling Club rests in the hands of our current Executive and Committee who recognise that our Club needs growth in membership and higher levels of performance in Pennant bowls to attain success and longevity. These things are important as has

been our very successful coaching clinic in the off-season which provided us with an influx of new members. Our strong Night Owls program is giving us the financial stability our Club so desperately needed and this will provide the catalyst for the future. It is also important that our members and volunteers are positive in their thoughts and contribute wherever possible to keep one of the oldest inner city clubs to the forefront of the great game of bowls.”Wise words indeed from one of our sport’s newest adherents.

Junior DevelopmentThe year is drawing to a close, which is a good opportunity to look back on what has been achieved in 2010 and look forward to 2011.The main achievement for junior development this year has been the establishment of eight Henselite Junior Development Squads across the State. They have proven to be a great success, with over 80 members across the eight squads and more joining all the time. We’re also close to establishing our ninth squad, based out of the Encounter Bay/Victor Harbor area, which we hope will hit the ground running from the start of 2011.Encouragingly, 33% are non-Bowling Club members meaning they are new to the sport. This is a positive as it shows that young people are attracted to the sport and we’re now giving them an opportunity to participate.A number of these new members have come through the Active After-school Communities program, which has been a resounding success in 2010.Over 40 Primary Schools, and 1,136 students, have participated in Lawn Bowls activities throughout the year. We’re working hard to ensure there is a consistent Bowls program delivered across the State and this will only help the program grow next year

CoachingCoaching wise we continued to roll out the new Bowls Australia Coaching Accreditation system, accrediting an extra 26 coaches across the State. From next year, Bowls SA will be able to offer the Selection & Competition Modules, together with the Advanced Coaching Course. This is the next step

on the road to completing the new Coaching Accreditation Structure set-out by Bowls Australia and the Australian Sports Commission.Adjacent on page 27 is the Coaching Calendar for 2011 containing the dates and venues for the coaching courses planned for 2011. Keep an eye on the Bowls SA website for Application Forms, which will be specific to each course.

Coach of the YearIn 2011 Bowls SA will again be recognising our army of dedicated accredited coaches by awarding the Coach of the Year Award at the 2011 Bowls SA Awards Dinner. The Coach of the Year Awards aims to acknowledge and recognise those that have achieved success in their coaching endeavours across the past 12 months, whether that be coaching teams, working with juniors or any other endeavour. Earlier this year Vic Culbertson was awarded the inaugural Coach of the Year Award.Coaching is vital to the future of the sport, not only in South Australia, but across the nation. A new Coaching Accreditation System has been implemented across the past 12 months and we continue to produce high-quality coaches at all levels of the game.Nomination forms and more information can be found on the Bowls SA website.

GrantsIt is very encouraging to see the number of Clubs applying for grants through the Office for Recreation & Sport (ORS).The ORS had two of their major grants, the Active Club Program and Community Facilities grant, close recently and Bowling Clubs from all across the State put forward submissions for funding.Whilst not everyone can be successful, all Clubs have given themselves a great opportunity after providing well presented, professional applications for the ORS to consider.Overall, we had 24 Bowling Clubs apply for grants (24 – Community Facilities and eight Active Club) and I have no doubt that a number of these will be successful.Of course, it isn’t just the Government and ORS that provides opportunities for funding, many other organisations and local councils also offer grants. For a rundown on these, visit the Grants page of the Bowls SA website. It is also important to remember that Bowls SA are happy to provide a Letter of Support for your application. There are certain guidelines in place regarding this and for more information please call Paul Williams on 8234 7544.

Australian Open – Athletes with a DisabilityBowls SA, in conjunction with SASRAPID, conducted the selection tournament for the 2011 Australian Open – Athletes with a Disability on Sunday 7 November. There was a good turnout, with eight bowlers from all across the State turning out for the opportunity to impress State Coach, Stephanie Simms. The competition on the day was fierce, with all players keen to claim the two spots available under the revised format for the Australian Open.

DevelopmentPAUL WILLIAMS

The new format will see one female and one male from each disability sector selected from each State. They will compete against players from other States with the same disability in a four-day tournament conducted in Melbourne in February. The players were split into two sections, and played three games of two sets of seven ends against the fellow players in their section. At the end of the day the winner of each section was awarded a Be Active prize pack, while the overall winner walked away with a shiny Gold medal. The winner of section one was Michael Lowrie of the Keith Bowling Club, who also took out the overall prize. The winner of section two in an incredibly close finish was Gavin Haese. After watching the bowlers in action, State Coach Stephanie Simms has selected Michael Lowrie and Rosemary Lane, the top ranked female, to represent South Australia at the Australian Open – Athletes with a Disability.Bowls SA would like to thank SASRAPID and Stephanie Simms for their assistance in organising the event and their hard work on the day.

Thank youI would like to finish off by thanking everyone who has been involved in assisting the Development department with our activities this year. There are too many to name individually, but they have contributed greatly to the success of our programs and their hard work is appreciated by all.

SA to host 2010/11RSL National Lawn Bowls Carnival

The SA RSL Lawn Bowls Association is affiliated with Bowls SA and hosts a number of events at various Metropolitan and Country Clubs each year. A key focus is the Annual Carnival held each year in late December and early January.

Each year RSL Bowlers from around Australia compete in a National Carnival that is held in each State in turn. For 2010/11 the host is South Australia. In late December approximately 150 interstate bowlers, plus the SA team, will gather in Adelaide to compete in the Interstate Series for the Jack Hamilton VC Trophy and the Dr. Sydney Krantz Memorial Trophy.

Following these tournaments approximately 200 bowlers from all States will compete in the Sir Arthur Lee National Fours Championship. The SA RSL Bowls Association has been

busy making the arrangements for this event, particularly the funds necessary to host an event of this size. For 2010/11 some key aspects of the event are the arrival on 27 December of approximately 230 interstate visitors. On 28 December everyone will gather at the SA Women’s Memorial Playing Field, in honour of the SA Army Nursing Sisters massacred at Bangka Island on 16 February 1942, for the Ceremony of Remembrance.

The Interstate Series tournaments will be held at the Marion Bowling Club from the 28 - 30 December, with sectional play for the National Fours at the Ascot Park and Grange Bowling Clubs from 2 - 4 January. The Finals of the National Fours will be held at the Brighton Bowling Club & RSL Club 5 and 6 January. To participate in the Annual Carnival, bowlers must be Service Members of the RSL.

If anyone is interested in more information regarding the SA RSL Lawn Bowls or the carnival, or future carnivals, please contact: Secretary Barry Horner [email protected] or President Trevor Whitelaw [email protected]. Enquiries would also be welcomed for this carnival National Fours event as there may be an opportunity for some late entries.

Region 1The Millicent Bowling Club is very proud of Vice President, John Scudds, who was successful in qualifying for the Open Singles play off in Adelaide on 13 November. The Region final was played in Millicent on Friday 5 November between Brian Vorwerk and John. The game was very close with Brian and John scoring end for end for the first 11 ends. John was then able to score six in two ends giving him an eight shot lead. The tide turned and Brian won the next four ends bringing the score back to a two shot difference 14-12. By the 22nd end John had an eight shot lead again and although Brian made a valiant effort, winning the next three ends, John managed a four on the 26th end to win the game 25-18.

The Lobethal Bowling Club has come a long way since its opening in 1946 when members took their refreshments under the willow trees because the clubrooms weren’t big enough.Almost $400,000 has been spent on new clubrooms in which 150 members and guests gathered recently to celebrate, in comfort, the completion of their new pride and joy. The Club now boasts magnificent rooms with ample space to hold functions, as well as a state of the art kitchen and bar.Builder and Club member Shane Williams removed the old clubhouse, which was full of asbestos, and delivered the new building on time despite some onsite challenges. Along the way all club members assisted at some point with working

The family’s affiliation with the Loxton Bowling Club started when Doug joined the club in the early 1970s, having previously been a member of Brown’s Well.

Doug’s son Peter joined about five years ago, another son John started the year before last and now John’s youngest son Jake joined last year. Doug’s other son Malcolm has joined his Dad and brothers on Legacy Day for the past three years to form a family four.In a rare occurrence, Doug Skippered his teenage grandson Jake in a recent pennant match, while John lined up in another Loxton team.Doug’s other son Peter played for Loxton Blue, against his stepmother Dorothy who was in the Loxton Black team.Dorothy, a former SA Women’s Bowling Club executive is well known to metropolitan and country bowlers for her role as an Umpire Tutor. With father and son Mike and Jacob Taylor teaming up with Doug and Jake to form a very powerful Four it is another positive sign that younger people are getting involved and the sport has a promising future.

REMEMBRANCE DAY, THE HIGH COURT AND THE VIBE

The 11th November 2010 was significant day. It was Remembrance Day, always a significant day in the history of Australia. Remembrance Day fittingly remembers those who have fallen in all the wars that have come before, but most particularly those from World War I, a conflict in which a generation of Australians lost their lives. With increasing emphasis, many stories are heard or read as to why we should remember the fallen, their valiant efforts and their young lives cut down in their prime. We are told it was to preserve a way of life, freedoms and rights and a culture unique to Australia which we continue to enjoy today.

It was fitting that on that day three very important High Court decisions were handed down which reflected those very ideals. The High Court is an interesting place. It is a daunting place in which to appear even as an instructing solicitor, even by video link, hundreds of miles away from where the court actually sits. The appeal process involves three stages:1. You need to lodge an appeal

document seeking leave to appeal in nearly all cases. Leave can be granted on the papers, that is, with no actual appearance or alternatively a hearing which lasts about 20 minutes for each side. “Sudden death” it is called because sometimes you are not called upon and sometimes it is clear from the outset which arguments are not going to be accepted. The win loss ratio greatly favours the latter.

2. Then the appeal is argued if leave is granted, commonly many months later.

3. Then the decision is handed down, again often many months later.

But on the 11th of the 11th 2010 three decisions were handed down which bear comment.

The Totani case is the bikie case. In a resounding majority judgment of 6 to 1 the High Court of Australia has said that

the particular law that was challenged was struck down because the particular law in question which dramatically restrained a person’s liberty was an exercise of power which courts should administer not a government official. It was a resounding comment to legislators that there are limits to the powers which they can exercise.

In another case delivered that day it was found that refugees had to be given procedural fairness in matters which the Commonwealth said it did not. Whilst the issue of refugees is controversial, it is difficult to justify why a refugee in an Australian court should not have the same rights that an Australian has in an Australian court. That is to have any decision made about their liberty being made in accordance with the law, and in this case by ensuring procedural fairness in their hearing.

The third case Anstis dealt with a tax deduction for a University student where the court ruled that it was appropriate to grant it as a tax deduction in the circumstances of that matter, regarding self education expenses.

All three cases illustrate the very purpose of why the courts exist. They will not always find in favour of the individual against the State but it must be remembered that the State and the Commonwealth are extraordinarily powerful institutions. They can ruin people’s lives with a stroke of a pen, with a thoughtless piece of legislation and with political expediency taking over from a proper consideration of all matters.

The Totani case will undoubtedly have further chapters to play and it may well end up in the High Court again. The Attorney General in South Australia has indicated he will be considering modelling laws in accordance with what the High Court have indicated.

In recent weeks it has been reported that the Commonwealth will need to set up more courts to deal with the review and appeals in relation to refugee applications. Some question whether that is a good thing. In my mind, there is no question at all. The decisions in the High Court of Australia that day are a

powerful reminder to all that everyone is answerable to the law even big powerful governments and corporations. The courts exist to protect individual liberties and our laws have evolved through trial and error and will continue to evolve. They change rapidly but what must not be lost are those basic fundamental rights which the court talked about in different ways in three different cases on Remembrance Day 2010.

In my view the effect of those decisions mirror the values of those young men and women who died in theatres of war all over the world in the course of Australia’s short history. It was the protections and those rights that they were fighting to protect and preserve.

Yes the 11th of the 11th was a day to remember and I reckon that Danny Denuto would have been pleased with the “vibe” in the High Court that day. The Kerrigan household too might have had the appropriate response to those who threaten those very important community values and rights that were illustrated in those decisions that day. You could almost see Darryl, turning toward those who argued against the ultimate decisions and say “tell them they are dreaming”.

Bowls SA acknowledges the passing of a leading bowls identity, Des Moran.

Desmond James Moran MBE14 July 1921 - 9 August 2010

Des Moran, who became a leading identity and champion in lawn bowls in South Australia, first attended Flinders Street Primary and then Norwood Technical High School. He was always keen on sports, playing football for the Norwood Bs, as well as cricket, golf and tennis.Early in World War II, he joined the RAAF and completed his initial training for air crew in Sydney. His five years with the RAAF until war’s end in 1945 included diverse overseas service. Des completed air gunner training in Canada and was commissioned as an instructor in Ontario. He was then transferred to England followed by Cairo. Next was a posting to India, where he trained the Ghurkhas to jump from planes into Burma. He married Joan Wilson in 1950 and they had three children.Joan’s father, Robert Wilson, introduced Des to bowls. Des excelled at bowls

and golf but decided to concentrate on bowls. Des worked for Harris Scarfe in Adelaide, and became manager of its sports department, then moving on to work as a travelling salesman, for Adelaide Sports, collecting orders from sporting companies in country SA.Des and Joan bought the old Lockleys Bowling Club at Cross Street, Lockleys in 1964, renamed it ‘Kingsdown Bowling Club’, and turned it into the only privately run bowling club. They ran social tournaments, very popular in its day, as there was limited winter bowls at other clubs. Businesses and other social clubs enjoyed days or nights of social bowls. Des also used the greens for coaching and from 1963 until his death Des and Joan lived in their house at Lockleys that was adjacent to and overlooked the bowling club. From 1964, ‘Kingsdown’ was Des’s main occupation. As proprietor, greenkeeper, tournament director, coach and even working behind the bar the Club was a full time job in the winter. In summer he continued working with Adelaide Sports; still running evening social matches.Des and Joan sold the club in 1983 after which the grounds were made into a retirement complex. Having retained one rink Des continued to coach until he was 88 years old.

Bowls was Des’s life and in competition he mostly played for Walkerville Bowling Club, taking on the role as President in 1990 and 1991.Des played 182 interstate games and won 20 State titles, probably a record in his time, and represented Australia in Singles at the Embassy World Bowls Championship indoor competition in Scotland in 1981.He coached Parliamentary bowls and was State Coach in 1989 and 1990. Des made an outstanding contribution to bowls in South Australia and in 1980 he was awarded an MBE for services to bowls and was also named as Sports Star of the Month.

Questions 1. During the playing of an end the temporary adhesive identifying disk affixed to bowl

A was damaged and part of it is now protruding 2mm from the surface of the bowl. When measuring from the jack to the closest part of the actual surface of bowl A the directors find that bowl B is the shot. However when measuring from the jack to the nearest point of the protruding part of the identifying disk, they find that bowl A is the shot. Law 8.1.8 dot 1 states that any temporary adhesive markings shall be regarded as part of the bowl. Does that mean the bowl is the shot?

2. A delivered bowl comes to rest on the green and is in contact with the jack which is in the ditch. It is claimed that as the bowl is live and is in contact with the jack in the ditch, it is a toucher. Is this correct?

3. A bowl comes to rest and then falls over and touches the jack whilst the next bowl is in course. The director moves forward to mark the bowl as a toucher to which the opposing director objects. Is the bowl a toucher?

4. A player in team A suggests that a bowl is out of bounds. Director A checks it and picks it up agreeing with the player that it is out of bounds. The director of team B objects. What should be done?

5. A bowl finishes near the boundary line of the rink. Both directors look at the bowl and allow play to continue. When the players change ends the directors agree that the bowl is out of bounds. What is the position?

Answers1. NO. Bowl B is the shot. Temporary adhesive disks must be attached to the surface

of the bowl, therefore a legally attached disk will not have any protruding surfaces. Any protruding portion of a damaged temporary disk is not affixed to the surface of the bowl and so shall not be considered to be part of the bowl for the purpose of deciding the shot bawl. Law 8.1.8 dot 1.

2. NO. No bowl shall be accounted as a toucher by playing on to or coming into contact with the jack while the jack is in the ditch. Law 24.3.

3. NO. For the bowl to be toucher it must touch the jack before the next bowl is delivered. Law 24.2 dot 1.

4. The directors must agree that a bowl is dead before it can be removed. Law27.3. If a player moves a bowl before agreement is reached, the opposing director shall restore the bowl to its former position. Law 28.1.dot4. The directors must then agree whether or not the bowl is live. If they cannot agree they should ask the umpire to make a decision before play continues, Law 27.3.

5. The skips should decide whether a bowl is dead or not as soon as they realise it is necessary. If they cannot reach agreement they should ask the umpire to make a decision. (If the players do not realise that a decision is necessary as soon as the bowl comes to rest, the decision can still be made even after a number of bowls have been played after the bowl in question came to rest). Law 27.3.

You Be the Umpire – September 2010

Regrettably another correction is necessary to Answer 3 of the September ‘You Be the Umpire’. Prior to the Crystal Mark edition, all challenges against a bowl had to be made through the side manager in a side game. However Law 8.3.2 now allows any player, the manager in a side game, the umpire or Controlling Body to lodge a challenge to bowls within ten minutes of the completion of the end in which the bowls were used and accompanied by $150 deposit. DR 2.3

Law 8.4 The umpire then asks the player to hand over the set of bowls which will then be sent to the Controlling Body for testing by a Licensed Tester. Beth YoungChair, Umpires Committee
