Q.1. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:

How a Mother Shaped a Future President

    1. Barack Obamas mother died on November 7, 1995, a few weeks before her 53 rd

birthday. Her death from uterine cancer came between two key events in her childrenslife, Barack and Maya. One year later Obama won his first election, to the Illinois statesenate, the initial stop on his swift journey to the White House where the mass audience

brought him and provided him with lifelong financial security.

    2. It is harsh to say but nonetheless that Barack Obama was never lucky to have livedwith his father, who was rude and an unacceptable personality. By far the most influentialfigures in Obamas life were his mother and grandmother. He has some of the demeanourof his grandmother and the will and much of the outlook of his mother. Dreams fromMy Mother better evokes his lifes story. His mother, Ms. Stanley Ann Dunham, which later changed to Obama after marriage,

spent most of her life overseas. She was constantly on the move. She earned the doctorate

in Anthropology and had an anthropologists nature as a participant observer. She wasawestruck by other cultures and ways of living. A polyglot, she could speak BahasaIndonesia fluently and a working knowledge of Urdu, Hindi, Javanese, French and Latin. There was never a foreign film she didnt want to see, a batik dress she didnt want towear, a mythology she didnt wish to understand.3. Barack Obamas relationship with his mother was complicated. She called him Barryor Bar. She pushed him to be serious and to look at people with empathy. He always felt

protective of her. In her career, Ms. Ann was idealistic but not nave. If she at times cameacross as nave to her children, it was in the role of a mother not wanting her children to

suffer. She was not really able to help the children grapple with that in each and everystep or feeling of their life. Perhaps even if she didnt help, she would feel at fault as amother.4. Not to feel guilty on Mothers day, says Obamas proudly about his mother. Withthe most difficult life which she underwent did not live to see her sons rise, but sheshaped the essence of this great President.

    Q.2. Read the poem carefully:

I had gone a-begging from door to door in the village path, when thy golden chariot appeared in the distancelike a gorgeous dream and I wonderedwho was this King of all Kings!

My hopes rose high and me thoughtmy evil days were at an end,and I stood waiting for alms to be given unaskedand for wealth scattered on all sides in the dust.

The chariot stopped where I stood.Thy glance fell on meand thou camest down with a smile.I felt that the luck of my life had come at last. Then of a sudden thou didst hold out thy right handand say `What hast thou to give to me?'

Ah, what a kingly jest was it

to open thy palm to a beggar to beg!I was confused and stood undecided, and then from my wallet I slowly took outthe least little grain of corn and gave it to thee.

But how great my surprise when at the day's endI emptied my bag on the floor to finda least little gram of gold among the poor heap.I bitterly wept and wishedthat I had had the heart to give thee my all.
