Pastor’s Note…

Why do I love September? My birthday is in September. It was in September when Karen said, “Yes” to marrying me. All good reasons why I should love the month.

But, I think I love September because it’s the perfect month to make a new start on things. Football season is starting as the summer practices give way to games in the fall. People are going back to school and summer vacations are over.

It’s a natural time for transition and for changing our routines. The end of the year is approaching so if you want to make something happen you already have a naturally built in deadline.

In the natural world, it’s time for the fall harvest season to begin. The cycle of grace revealed in taking crops to market and saving seed and storing produce for the times when we need things in the future is upon us.

September is also the month where we can come back to the Lord in a particular and concrete way. September 16th is National Back to Church Sunday! I invite you to take advantage of this opportunity to renew your commitment to worship with other Christian believers and to pray together for the revival and healing we need from the Lord.

We’re planning a special picnic for that day at the pavilion following our 10:30 AM service. You and your family can bring a covered dish and join with us for this good get together.

I also want to invite you to join with us starting on September 5th on Wednesday evenings for MORE. There are three great classes from which to choose following a great supper each week.

Plus, during the end of August and all of September you can be part of one of the “Meet Your Pastor” events where you can meet Karen and me but even more importantly we can meet and get to know you better. Also, if your family is involved in one of the local schools, let me know so I can join you on the sidelines or in the stands this fall.

One way or the other, let’s get to know one another. In grace and peace,Norman Ramsey

MEET YOUR PASTORSeveral families have volunteered to host a Meet and Greet Pastor Norman  in their homes. This is an opportunity for you to get to know Norman better, but even more a chance for Norman to get to know you! Please survey the homes and times available to see when you can be there. The sign-up

sheets are available in the Narthex. For more information, contact Glen Oberholtzer ([email protected]).

Your Serve Committee is excited by the wonderful spirit of generosity and, well, serving in the spirit of Christ… that moves within St. Paul’s! Many great things are happening, and still more is ahead. Would you believe we’re starting to discuss the Advent season?

The Serve Committee is accepting NEW TWIN bed sheet sets for Ritenour Rest Home.  Please put your sheets at the

cross in the sanctuary.  While we realize Ritenour is a for-profit facility, offering the gift of the sheet sets to the residents will immediately improve the daily life of the people who live there.   Please join the Serve Committee at Ritenour on Wednesday, September 26th to change the beds (putting on your new sheets) and fellowship with residents. Meet at St. Paul's no later than 6:00 or meet us at Ritenour, 403 N.

One new project St. Paul’s had fun with was supporting the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR); almost 30 members of St. Paul’s packed 201 Hygiene Kits in the Family Life Center August 9th. All had a great time, and “many hands made light (and quick!) work”. A special “thanks!” goes out to Sharon Hirtriter for both securing the supplies, and staying precisely within budget!

Both the Valley Mission Sunday Meal program and the Trinity Episcopal Lunch program continue with great results, and remain under budget thanks to the hard work and careful shopping of all the volunteers. We are still looking for volunteer groups/families to cook and serve the Sunday meal for November 18th and December 16th (not Thanksgiving or Christmas). Please see Jackie McGovern, Mary Flint, or Leslie or David Meyr to sign up.

Another ongoing Serve project successfully reaching out with the love of Christ to the community is the “Stock the Pantry” program. This continues to expand St. Paul’s outreach on a one-to-one connection level, to relieve food anxiety and uncertainty in the greater Staunton area. When you see her, please give a special thanks to Cindy Lowe for her leadership and commitment to this program.

One of the exciting new ministries described in the last newsletter will start soon. Hewing very closely to the “Stock the Pantry” model, St. Paul’s will work closely with the leadership at New Directions to assist clients re-establishing their lives. If you haven’t heard of the New Directions Center, they are a non-profit community organization devoted to diminishing the occurrence and impact of emotional, physical, and sexual violence in Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County. This program is carefully designed to protect the anonymity of their clients; please see a member of the Serve team if you wish a more detailed explanation. In addition, New Directions will make a presentation to the United Methodist Men at their breakfast on November 17th.

A “teaser”: there is one more ministry coming up that should become a very fun way to take the love of Christ (and your generosity!) into the local area. We hope to have details very, very soon!

Your Serve Team will meet again Thursday, September 6th at 5:30 in St. Paul’s library (this is a change for the Committee!); please attend if you have any suggestions or questions, or if you want to join this active, fun and vital group.
