Silent Confession of Sin

Corporate Prayer of ConfessionAlmighty Father, please forgive our many sins. Forgive the sins that we remember, and the sins we have forgotten. Forgive our many failures in the face of temptation, and those times when we have been stubborn in the face of correction. Forgive the times we have been proud of our own achievements, and those when we have failed to boast in your works. Forgive the harsh judgments we have made of others, and the leniency we have shown ourselves. Forgive the lies we have told to others, and the truths we have avoided. Forgive us the pain we have caused others, and the indulgence we have shown ourselves. Father, have mercy on us and make us whole for the sake of your Son and our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon 1 Peter 2:24He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

Hymn Here Is Love

Here is love vast as the ocean, loving-kindness as the floodWhen the Prince of Life, our ransom, shed for us His precious bloodWho His love will not remember? Who can cease to sing His praise? He can never be forgotten throughout heav’n’s eternal days

On the Mount of Crucifixion, fountains opened deep and wideThrough the flood-gates of God’s mercy flowed a vast and gracious tideGrace and love like mighty rivers poured incessant from aboveHeaven’s peace and perfect justice kissed a guilty world in love

Here is love that conquered evil: Christ, the firstborn from the graveDeath has failed to be found equal to the life of Him Who savesIn the valley of our darkness dawned His everlasting lightPerfect love in glorious radiance has repelled death’s hellish night That same love beyond all measure, mocked and slain by hateful menLives and reigns in resurrection and can never die againHere is love for all the ages, radiant Sun of Heav’n He standsCalling home His Father’s children, holding forth His wounded hands

Here is love, vast as the heavens; countless as the stars above Are the souls that He has ransomed, precious daughters, treasured sonsWe are called to feast forever on a love beyond our timeGlorious Father, Son, and Spirit now with man are intertwined

Westminster Larger Catechism Q. 154Leader: What are the outward means by which Christ communicates to us the benefits of His mediation?People: The outward and ordinary means by which Christ communicates to His church the benefits of His mediation, are all His ordinances—especially the Word, sacraments, and prayer—all of which are made effectual to the elect for their salvation.

Hymn My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less #521 (1-4)

My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousnessI dare not trust the sweetest frameBut wholly lean on Jesus' name

Refrain:On Christ, the solid rock, I standAll other ground is sinking sandAll other ground is sinking sand

When darkness veils his lovely faceI rest on his unchanging graceIn every high and stormy galeMy anchor holds within the veil

His oath, his covenant, his bloodSupport me in the whelming floodWhen all around my soul gives wayHe then is all my hope and stay

When he shall come with trumpet soundO may I then in him be foundDressed in his righteousness aloneFaultless to stand before the throne

Sermon Notes“What is the Mission of the Church?”

Acts 2:42-47

Announcements

1. The Deacon of the month for October is Matt Hamilton.

2. Adult Choir rehearsal at 5pm today, then at 6pm we’ll have our evening worship service.

3. Thank you for your nominations for officers! The session received three names: Ken Harmon (elder), Nate Henderson (elder), and Michael Moore (deacon). All three have been vetted by the session and approved to begin Officer Training Class. Please pray for these men, that God would continue to equip them for the building up of the body of Christ at Wayside!

4. We believe that both the parents (who take the primary lead!) and the church work together for the discipleship of children. The church doesn't take the parents' place, but rather affirms and assists them in the raising of their children to the glory of God. To that end, and in addition to prayer, we have three distinct ways that the church comes alongside the parents: (1) Sunday school, (2) Friday Night Fellowship on the first Friday of each month @6pm, and (3) girls/guys Bible studies on the third Sunday night of each month @5pm. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Brian or Pastor Chuck.

5. Women of Wayside, please join us on October 7 for our monthly Bible study and book discussion at 6:30pm in the downstairs Sunday school room. Each month we discuss a chapter in Nancy Guthrie’s book Even Better than Eden. In our next meeting, we will unpack the concepts and Scriptures from chapter 8, “The Story of a Dwelling Place.” Please feel free to take advantage of the childcare that is provided. If you have any questions, please contact Jodi at 214-404-5012. We look forward to seeing you there!

6. Wednesday, October 9 is our night to provide meals for Signal Mountain Social Services families. If you'd like to volunteer to provide food, please sign up here on the October 9 date: https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/m6r5j49met6t or talk to Matt Hamilton. Also, if you can help deliver the food, please let Matt know.

7. On Friday, October 11th @ 7:00pm, we will be having a Vision / Q&A night at the church in the sanctuary to talk about where we are as a church and where we hope to be in the future. Childcare will be provided.

8. God is "holy, holy, holy" (Isa. 6:3) and has called us to be holy and to pursue holiness. Join us for our annual Reformation Heritage Conference October 19-20 as we strive to recover this essential biblical and Reformation doctrine for our worship, our churches, our families, and our lives. Dr. Ligon Duncan will be our featured speaker. The schedule is a bit different this year, and NO registration or payment is required! Please check out the bulletin insert for more details.
