30-POINT SCORING GAMES - Jon Davis scored a Halton Arena record 38 points against Marshall (1/11) which marked his second career 30-point scoring game. Davis recorded his third career 30-point scoring game with 37 points against FIU (3/1). Andrien White recorded his second career 30-point

scoring game with 30 points at ECU (12/18). This marks the third straight season that the 49ers have had at least two players score 30 points in a game. Charlotte has now had a player score at least 30 points in a game 108 times in school history.

NINERS WIN FIRST GAME UNDER HOUS-TON FANCHER - The 49ers defeated ECU, 69-50, in their first game under interim head coach Hous-ton Fancher. With that win, Charlotte has had seven coaches in their history win their first game at the helm of the 49ers men’s basketball program.

HOUSTON FANCHER TO SERVE AS INTER-IM COACH FOR REST OF 2017-18 SEASON - UNC Charlotte Chancellor Dr. Philip Dubois and Director of Athletics Judy Rose, announced that third-year head men’s basketball coach Mark Price was released from his contract on December 14, 2017.Assistant coach Houston Fancher, who has 12 years of head coaching experience, will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2017-18 season.

HALTON ARENA RECORD 116 POINTS - Charlotte set a school-record for points in Halton Arena with 116 points against Methodist (11/10). The previous record was 114 points against UTSA, February 25, 2016. The school-record is 124 points scored by the 49ers twice vs. Tusculum, February 10, 1973 and Baptist, February 19, 1976.

REACHING THE CENTURY MARK - Char-lotte’s 116 points against Methodist (11/10) marked the second straight season that Charlotte went over

the 100 point mark in their season-opener. Last season, Charlotte scored 101 points in their season-opening victory over Newberry (11/11/16). Char-lotte scored 100 points in their first road game a win at Elon (11/14/16). During Coach Fancher’s time at Charlotte, the 49ers have scored at least 100 points ten times. Charlotte scored at least 100 points in each of its first two games last year which marked only the third time in school history that the 49ers began a season with consecutive 100-point scoring games. The 49ers accomplished that feat during the 1976-77 and 1990-91 seasons as well. Charlotte is 64-2 all-time when they scored at least 100 points. In the 1974-75 season, the 49ers scored at least 100 points nine times.

STARTED SEASON AT HOME IN HALTON - This season marked the second straight season that the 49ers played six of their first eight games in Hal-ton Arena. This year marks the third time since the 2004-05 season that the 49ers have played at least six of their first eight games at home. In 2002-03, Charlotte played seven of their first nine games at home. In 1988-89, the 49ers played six of their first eight games at home including their first five games. .

WALK-ON TO SCHOLARSHIP - In a team meet-ing in September, the 49ers awarded a scholarship to Corey Bias for his senior season. This marked the second straight season that a walk-on earned a scholarship as a senior. Last year, Reid Aube was a walk-on for his first three seasons with the 49ers. In the summer of 2016, Aube was awarded a scholar-ship for his senior year at a team meeting in early July.

CONFERENCE USA HISTORY - The 49ers, who were an original member of Conference USA from 1995-2005, are in their fifth year back in Confer-ence USA after spending eight years in the Atlan-tic 10. During the 49ers time in Conference USA, Charlotte has captured two Conference USA Tour-

nament titles (1999 and 2001) and a share of the 2004 Confer-ence USA regular-season title. During the 49ers’ 15 years in Conference USA, Charlotte has made seven trips to the NCAA Tournament and one trip to the NIT. The 49ers have compiled an overall record of 254-209 and a Conference USA record of 130-112 during their 15 years in Conference USA. Six times the 49ers have won 20 games while a member of Conference USA. Two former 49ers stand-outs (DeMarco Johnson - 1998 and Eddie Basden - 2005) were named Conference USA Player of the Year. Former 49ers coach Melvin Watkins was named Conference USA Coach of the Year in 1997. Basden earned Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year honors twice (2004 and 2005). This marks the most threes that the 49ers have connected on in a game since knocking down 14 threes against North Texas last season (12/31/16). The 49ers con-nected on 11 three-point field goals in their season-opening game against Methodist (11/10). Charlotte connected on 10 three-point field goals against Pres-byterian (11/20). Charlotte connected on 10 three-point field goals at James Madison (12/2). Charlotte connected 12 three-point field goals at USF (12/21). The 49ers have now connected on double-figure three-point field goals in a game 29 times while Coach Houston Fancher has been a part of the 49ers coaching staff. The most three-point field goals that the 49ers have made during Coach Fancher’s time at Charlotte was 17 against Rice (February 11, 2016).

HALTON ARENA SCORING RECORD - Jon Davis scored 38 points against Marshall (January 11) which set the Halton Arena scoring record by a Niner. The previous record was 36 points scored by Leemire Goldwire against Saint Joseph’s (January 16, 2008). Davis scored 37 points against FIU (3/1) which is the second most points scored by a Niner in Halton Arena history. Last season, Davis scored 35 points in Halton Arena against Old Dominion (Janu-ary 21, 2017) which is tied for the fourth most points scored by a Charlotte player in Halton Arena. Da-vis’s 38 points is tied with Lew Massey (38 points vs. VCU, February 16, 1978) for the seventh most points scored by a Niner in a game in school history. Davis’s 37 points vs. FIU is tied for the ninth most points scored by a Niner in a game in school history.

Houston Fancher, who is in his third season on the Charlotte 49ers coaching staff, was named interim head coach on December 14, 2017 for the rest of the 2017-18 season.

Before joining the Charlotte 49ers coach-ing staff, Fancher had 12 years’ experience

as a college head coach including nine years as Appalachian State’s head coach.

In his first season at Charlotte (2015-16), three members of the coach-ing staff’s first recruiting class earned Conference USA honors. Joseph Uchebo, who earned second-team All-Conference USA honors, set a couple of Conference USA single-season rebounds records. Jon Davis and Andrien White were both named to the Conference USA All-Fresh-man team.

In his second season at Charlotte (2016-17), the coaching staff’s first signee Jon Davis finished second in C-USA in scoring while earning second-team All-C-USA honors. The 49ers finished the season in the top five in the league in scoring offense, three-point field goal percentage and three-pointers made per game. Charlotte finished second in C-USA and in the Top 50 in the nation in free throw shooting percentage.

Fancher brings more than 28 years of collegiate coaching experience to the 49ers coaching staff, including 12 seasons as a head coach at North Greenville College (three years) and Appalachian State (nine years).

Fancher won 181 games in his 12 years as a head coach at North Greenville and at Appalachian State. During his time at Appalachian State, the Mountaineers captured Southern Conference North Division championships in 2003, 2007 and 2008. He earned Southern Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2003. In 2007, he was a finalist for the mid-major national coach of the year award after guiding Appalachian State to a school-record 25 wins, the San Juan Shootout title and a berth in the NIT.

After leaving Appalachian State in 2009, he joined the staff at the University of Tennessee. He worked with head coaches Bruce Pearl and Cuonzo Martin. He was Martin’s Director of Basketball Operations from 2011-13. He spent the 2013-14 season as an assistant coach under Buzz Peterson at UNC Wilmington.

Fancher began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at Division III Maryville (Tenn.) College from 1988-92. He then took over as head coach at North Greenville from 1993-95 before taking a position as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt for the 1995-96 season. From 1996-2000, Fancher worked as an assistant coach (1996-98) and associate head coach (1998-2000) at Appalachian State.

A native of Newport, Tennessee, he earned an undergraduate degree in Physical Education in 1988 from Middle Tennessee and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Lincoln Memorial University in 1990.

Fancher and his wife, Cathy, have two sons, Hayden and Ethan and a daughter Cameron.

Andre GrayAssistant CoachThird Season Andre Gray is in his third season as an assistant coach with the Charlotte 49ers. Gray, who has 16 years of college coaching experi-ence, came to Charlotte after spending the 2014-15 season as an assistant coach at Winston-Salem State. In that season, he helped Winston-Salem State win 18 games and reach the championship game of the CIAA Tournament. Prior to joining the Winston-Salem State coaching staff, Gray spent three seasons as assistant coach at UNC Wilmington (2011-14) on Buzz Peterson’s staff. Gray and fellow Charlotte assistant coach Houston Fancher were on the UNC Wilmington’s staff together for the 2013-14 season. Prior to UNC Wilmington, Gray spent three years (2008-11) as assistant coach at Western Carolina. During his time at Western Carolina, the Catamounts posted three consecutive winning seasons and two Southern Conference North Division titles working

for head coach Larry Hunter. He came to Western Carolina, after spending the 2007-08 season as an assistant coach at Gardner-Webb, which posted a 16-16 record that season including a victory at nationally-ranked Kentucky. Then, Gray spent four years as an assistant coach at Wingate University (2003-07). During his time at Wingate, the Bulldogs earned bids to the 2006 and 2007 NCAA Division II Tournaments after capturing the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) championship both seasons. In 2007, Wingate advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, capturing the South Atlantic Region crown. Gray began his coaching career as the head boys’ basketball coach at Clayton Middle School in Clayton, North Carolina. He also served as an assistant coach at J.F. Webb High School in Oxford, N.C before beginning his collegiate coaching experience as an assistant coach for two years at his alma-mater Methodist College. During his time on the Methodist coaching staff, he helped lead the team to a USA South Conference Championship and a 22-6 league record over those two years. The Elizabethtown, North Carolina native earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from Methodist College in 1998. Gray played basketball at Method-ist from 1995-97. As a senior, he helped Methodist advance to the 1997 Division III Elite Eight. Gray is married to the former Tarius Williams.

Ivo SimovicAssistant CoachFirst Season Ivo Simovic is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Charlotte 49ers. Simovic brings a wealth of international basketball experience to the 49ers staff. Simovic joins the 49ers coaching staff after spending the previous two seasons as a member of the University of Hartford men’s basketball coaching staff including serving as the associate head coach during the 2016-17 season. The Belgrade, Serbia native came to Hartford in 2015 after spending eight years as the sports director for CB Espacio Torrelodones in Madrid, Spain. He landed some of the top players in Madrid throughout his time there. During his time at CB Espacio Torrelo-dones, they finished runner-up in the Madrid Basketball Federation during the 2011-12 season and were the fifth-best program in all of Spain in his final season. The team showed incredible growth during Simovic’s time, and he served as a mentor to several

coaches including Oklahoma City Thunder assistant coach Darko Rajakovic. Prior to his time at Torrelodones, he spent eight years working with Serbia’s prestigious Red Star basketball club. During his time at Red Star, they won the 2004 National Championship and were runner-up in his final season in 2007. Dozens of his players went on to play for the Serbian National Team, which are currently ranked third in the world. Simovic also spent the summers of 2013 and 2014 working as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs summer league teams. He earned an NBA Champion-ship ring from the team after the squad took the 2014 title. He graduated from Belgrade’s Union University with a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Economic Management in 2013. Simovic and his wife, Jelena, have two children, Ema and Marko.

Tanner SmithAssistant CoachFirst Season as Assistant Coach/Third Season On Charlotte 49ers Coaching Staff Tanner Smith, who is in his third season on the Charlotte 49ers coaching staff, has been promoted to assistant coach after spending the last two plus seasons as Director of Basketball Operations. Smith joined the 49ers coaching staff after spending the 2014-15 season as a graduate assistant coach at Mississippi State. Smith, who was a former standout player at Clemson University, came to Mississippi State after a two-year professional career in Europe. Smith spent two years overseas playing professional basketball after his career at Clemson was over in 2012. During his collegiate career with the Tigers, Smith appeared in 127 games where he scored 986 points, grabbed 459 rebounds, dished out 320 assists and collected 159 steals en route to helping Clemson earn three bids to the NCAA Tournament. A 42.9 percent career shooter from the floor, Smith was the first player in Clemson history and the only ACC player in 2012 to

average at least 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Smith not only excelled on the court but in the classroom as well. He became only the second player in Clemson history to earn ACC All-Academic honors four times. In 2011, he was awarded the C.J. Spiller Award, which is presented annually to a Clemson student-athlete for excellence in both athletics and academics. Smith graduated from Clemson with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing in 2012. Smith signed with Clemson following an impressive prep career at Wesleyan School in Norcross, Ga., where he was listed as the 16th best player in the state of Georgia by Rivals.com. As a pro, he spent one year with Landstede Basketball of the Netherlands, where he earned Dutch League All-Star accolades. He then played one season with MHP Risen Lugwigsburg in Germany before retiring to join the staff at Mississippi State. Off the court, Smith founded Tanner’s Totes, a non-profit organization that provides care packages and support for kids with cancer. In June, 2017, he was honored by Major League Baseball’s Atlanta Braves as a Community Hero for his work with Tanner’s Totes.
