EEMIRATES FA CUP EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND

SATURDAY 10 AUGUST 2019KICK OFF 15:00

EGHAM TOWN v LANCING

HELLO EVERYONE, WELCOME TO RUNNYMEDE STADIUMTODAY’S GUESTS - LANCING

Today we have the pleasure of welcoming Lancing FC for the very first time. We extend a warm welcome to their players, supporters and officials, and to our match officials. We wish you all a safe journey home after what we hope will be an entertaining match. We have met once before, in the 1994-95 FA Vase

Preliminary Round. We left with a 3-0 win and in awe of the excellent standard of Lancing’s playing surface. With wins against Eastbourne Association (2-1) and Horley Town (3-2) our visitors’ form is in contrast to ours as we followed the undeserved loss at Colliers Wood United with a 0-3 defeat at home to Ascot United on Tuesday. We will be looking for an improvement today but it is clear we will have a battle on our hands. The winners travel to either Horsham YMCA (Southern Combination Premier) or Croydon (Southern Counties East One) on 24 August.Tuesday night will be the time for a replay, should it be needed. We will be hunting for the result of Walton & Hersham v Southall if not as we are scheduled to face Southall in the League. They share at Ashford Town (Mx.) so are just a tad closer than the 135 miles round trip to Culver Road, Lancing’s home at Sussex FA HQ. Next Saturday we are at home again, facing Balham, another side we have never played before.

COME ON YOU SARNIES!!!

A brief history of Lancing Football Club

Lancing Football Club had its origins in 1938 with a group of youngsters who used to kick about on Monks Recreation Ground which is adjacent to the clubs present home. The club was founded in 1941 as an all sports club and was known as Lancing Athletic. After the war the original youngsters began to play together again and in 1946/47 Lancing

Athletic, in their first attempt at adult football won the Brighton League and Cup also the Sussex Intermediate Cup. When Worthing moved to the Corinthian League in the summer of 1948 Lancing happened to be their only possible replacements in the Sussex County League and became thus promoted. In only their second season they finished as League runners-up, being beaten into second spot, on goal average. 1952 saw the club moved from their local park at the Crowshaw Recreation Ground to their present home at Culver Road. The cricket and badminton sections survive to this day but the footballers were obliged to form an independent organisation upon their election to the Sussex County Football League – they were still known as Lancing Athletic FC for some years later but the suffix drifted out of use around 1955. Fast-forward to the 2007-08 campaign, which started with some different problems, this time off the pitch as the old stand at Culver Road was finally demolished. With the new stand completed after the end of the season 2007-08, the facilities and SCFA earned the plaudits from all our visitors and drew an emphatic line under a much troubled season. A partnership with Jason Rutherford in 2010-11, provided an in-flux of new players, leading to promotion from Division Two. The first season in the top-flight saw the club reach their highest ever position – runners-up to Champions Three Bridges. Jason left for pastures new leaving Martin Gander in sole charge. With the squad mostly intact, the side could only produce a middle of the table finish. Martin stepped down as Manager to become Chairman, while former goalkeeper,

Page 13: s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com · Web viewThe club was founded in 1941 as an all sports club and was known as Lancing Athletic. After the war the original youngsters began to play together

Richard "Tricky" Whittington, took charge of the playing side. A difficult season for a couple of reasons: a new squad, and a six point deduction (by the book, but harsh). The club just maintained their top-flight status and looked to build on these foundations. Tricky's second season built on the previous campaign. Good displays in the FA competitions, against strong opposition, namely Greenwich Borough and Phoenix Sports, along with good runs in the RUR and Peter Bentley cups. While a nine game unbeaten run lifted to side to a final position of eighth. The Reserve side won promotion as Champions, including a 10-0 win, only to see their ambition trounced by a league re-org. And for the first time ever, Lancing also had a Ladies side, who also earned promotion as Champions, which included a 21-0 victory! In September 2015, Tricky departed after a dozen games, and assistant Ash Bailey took charge. Building on the previous seasons, Ash continued to push the club forward, and in a great end to the season, maintained 4th place in the league, and won the club's first silverware in years with victory in the Peter Bentley Cup. Ash left as Autumn arrived, with the side languishing in the lower reaches, and long-time Lancing favourite John Sharman guided the side to mid-table safety, and repeated the feat in his first full campaign. With changes off the pitch a new regime took over and brought back Ash Bailey as Manager. Unfortunately family issues saw Ash step down less than two months into the season. Mark Pulling was at the helm to the end of the campaign. Former skipper and midfield maestro, Naim Rouane, was appointed for 2019-20.
