HEAD COACH EZRA HENDRICKSON

Ezra Hendrickson was announced as an assistant coach on January 20, 2009, after completing a 14-year professional career, including 12 sea-sons in Major League Soccer. He is now the head coach of Sounders FC 2, the club’s USL team.

Hendrickson played parts of eight seasons for Sounders FC Head Coach Sigi Schmid, including three in Columbus prior to his retirement. Hendrickson appeared in 266 regu-lar season matches with 225 starts. Playing defense, he scored 23 goals and added 30 assists.

He also played in 32 postseason games with five goals and three as-sists. Hendrickson was a member of three MLS Cup championship teams, winning two with Schmid. Together, they won the 2002 MLS Cup with the Los Angeles Galaxy and the 2008 MLS Cup in Columbus. Hendrick-son was also with the champion D.C. United team in 2004.

A native of the island of St. Vincent in the Caribbean, Hendrickson began his career in 1997 with the New York MetroStars, before joining the Galaxy later that season. He totaled six sea-

sons in Los Angeles, where he won the 2000 CONCACAF Champions Cup, scoring two goals in a 3-2 vic-tory, and the 2001 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, scoring one goal in a 2-1 victory. He was named Galaxy’s Most Valuable Player for the 2001 season.

Hendrickson went to Dallas in 2003 and began the next season with the A-League’s Charleston Battery be-fore joining D.C. United for its run to the 2004 MLS Cup. After starting all 31 appearances in 2005 for expan-sion Chivas USA, Hendrickson was acquired by Columbus in early 2006.

An All-American and business admin-istration major at Drake University, Hendrickson first played profession-ally with New Orleans of the USISL Select League (1995-96). After earn-ing his first international cap in 1995, he served 12 years as captain of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines na-tional team.

Hendrickson earned his U.S. Soccer ‘A’ Coaching License in December of 2008. He is a resident of Layou, St. Vincent, and has two daughters, Xavia and McKenzie.

“EZRA KNOWS WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR, KNOWS WHAT IT TAKES TO PLAY AT THIS

LEVEL, AND HE PROVIDES A GREAT BRIDGE FROM S2 TO THE SOUNDERS FC FIRST TEAM.”

-SOUNDERS FC HEAD COACH SIGI SCHMID

There might be a new face in goal, but Sounders FC 2 is looking forward to seting the record straight against Arizona United SC this Sunday at Starfire Stadium.

After suffering a 2-1 road loss at the hands of Arizona in the heat of Scottsdale earlier this season, S2 returns home to host the surging United who have taken three wins of its last five matches.

“Arizona is a good club, and they beat us on their home turf even though we feel like we played a pretty good game,” said S2 Head Coach Ezra Hendrickson. “We are confident in how we play and want to keep our streak at home going this Sunday.”

Following S2’s loss to Arizona, the club responded with two consecutive shutout victories, with goalkeeper Charlie Lyon making a career-high 10 saves against Real Monarchs. However, the Rave Green could be without Lyon as he could be up with the Sounders FC First Team, given Stefan Frei‘s shoulder injury.

SuperDraft, joined the club officially on Thursday, having spent the last few months with SVN Zweibrücken in the German fourth division.

“I am excited for the opportunity to play with S2, and I’m going to focus on building good relationships with those players,” said Miller. “I’m looking forward to the next six months in Seattle and seeing what we can do.”

Arizona United SC visits Starfire with a 3-4-1 road record, and sits in sixth place in the USL Western Conference, the final playoff position. The club has the fewest goals scored by a playoff

team with 19, with a minus-eight goal differential.

Long Tan is the leading goalscorer for Arizona United SC (7) including the game-winning goal against S2 on June 20. Tan earned USL Player of the Week honors in Week Nine.

Jonathan Top also scored in the previous meeting between the two clubs, equalizing in the 60th minute.

S2 defender Nick Miele scored his second goal of the season in the previous meeting, heading home a Pablo Rossi free kick to take the lead in the first half.

A goal up against its bitter rivals, S2 entered the locker room at Merlo Field on June 29 in a familiar position, but

with a few unfamiliar faces. One of those faces belonged to Ashani Fairclough, the new Jamaican centerback who joined the club via trade from Wilmington Hammer-heads FC on June 15.

Fairclough, however, knows Se-attle well. The 22-year-old signed his first professional contract with Sounders FC at the ripe age of 20, totaling 214 minutes in the Re-serve League before signing with Wilmington the following year.

It was in the Merlo Field locker room that Ashani learned he would be making his debut for his new

club, replacing Jimmy Ockford at the beginning of the second half.

“It was a great atmosphere to make my debut in Portland,” said Fairclough. “The coaching staff really prepared me and motivat-ed me to go out there and do my best in the second half. A win over our rivals made it a perfect day to make a debut for me.”

A midfielder-turned-defender, Fairclough only played a total of 45 minutes, but he was part of an S2 defense that withstood 10 sec-ond-half shots and a late Portland onslaught of pressure to preserve the 2-0 shutout win.

“Given the First Team loss the day before, we felt like we needed to

put in the extra work, motivation and tenacity to get the victory at any cost. The guys played so hard, so the clean-sheet was a bonus for the effort we put in.”

Fairclough joins fellow countrymen Damion Lowe and Oniel Fisher, who have both received minutes with S2 this season. Although he has only been with the club for a couple weeks, the new signing is finding it easy to fit right in the fold.

“The guys make it really easy for me to come on and play,” said Fairclough. “When you have a good relationship off the field, it helps so much on the field. The guys have been very supportive and friendly which has made it so easy to acclimatize and adjust to the new team.”

Fairclough played the final five minutes in Sunday’s loss to Van-couver, and could make his home debut this Sunday against Arizona United SC.

The new defender is still recover-ing from a hamstring issue picked up while still playing with Wilming-ton, but saw his minutes in both matches as an important step in his recovery, as well as his contri-bution to the team.

“I still don’t know how many min-utes I’ll be able to play in a match, but I feel very healthy and happy to be working my way back,” he added. “The coaches know that no matter how many minutes they need me to play, I could go that long.”After first two appearances, Ashani
