2012.

5. Student Exchange

For the 2012 Calendar Year, International Services for Students received 437

applications to participate in the University's bilateral and multilateral exchange

programs (an increase of 41% from 311 applications in the 2011 Calendar Year).

Of the 437 applications, 34% (149) were incomplete or were not approved (compared

with 21% (79) in 2011). International Services for Students selected 66% (288 out of the

437) to participate (compared with 79% (260 out of 331) in 2011).

Of the applications selected, 79% (228) resulted in completed exchange terms (compared

with 83% (216 out of 260) in 2011), and 21% (60) cancelled (compared with 17% (44) in

2011).

The number of applications received that resulted in completed exchange terms in the

2012 Calendar Year increased by 6.5% over 2011(216 to 228). In addition, 15 students

who were nominated for exchange during the 2011 year (and were already captured in

that year’s application numbers) continued or deferred their exchange term(s) into 2012.

Thus, in total, 243 exchange terms were completed in 2012 (an increase of 4% from 234

in 2011).

The large number of applications and incomplete applications this year was reflective of

a (now discontinued) internal practice of rolling over incomplete applications to the next

deadline. Numbers for the 2013 year will reflect actual applications.

Senate Committee on International Activities 2012 Annual Report 9

6. International Co-op Program (information from co-op)

In the 2011/12 school year there were182 work practicums in 33 countries, which has

been an increase from the same semesters in the previous year (of 128 work practicums).

The international Co-op office has been working on more than the international

placements for students. We have also been developing an international Work Integrated

Learning and Co-op experiential learning curriculum for students going abroad.
