JENNIFER AIST

BABES IN THE WOODSHIKING, CAMPING & BOATING

WITH BABIES & YOUNG CHILDREN

1⁄4

Inspire families to have safe and happy wilderness adventures!

There’s a lot of information out there about introducing school-age kids to the outdoors,

but what about babies and toddlers? Author Jennifer Aist bridges that gap and shares

her tried and tested advice for active new parents. Babes in the Woods introduces out-

doorsy moms and dads to the joy and vigor of taking babies and toddlers into the woods

at a very early age. Well-organized chapters offer functional solutions for appropriate

gear, clothing, and food, nature games to play, and tips on potty breaks and sleeping

outdoors—but most importantly, Aist explores all the reasons why introducing even the

youngest of children to wilderness experiences is healthy, rewarding, and fun.

Whether planning a short day hike, a car camping trip, a base camp adventure, or a

backpacking excursion, Aist covers every season and climate, while confi rming that babies are well-suited for

the mountains, the water, and the adventures that lie beyond.

JENNIFER AIST is founder and director of Providence Alaska Medical Center’s parenting and childbirth

education program, Parenting with Providence. She teaches classes on everything from breastfeeding to

backpacking and conducts her signature “Babes in the Woods,” “Babes in the Snow,” and “Babes on the

Water” classes every year. She has also consulted with the Alaska Department of Fish & Game on a preschool

outdoor education curriculum. A graduate of the University of California, Davis, she lives in Anchorage,

Alaska, with her husband and four children.

3

Author Jennifer Aist and her twins snuggle in a “bag doubler,” which converts your individual sleeping bag into bedding for the whole crew.

• Addresses the ongoing “last child in the woods” concern

• Offers a fresh, modern approach to hiking and camping

with kids

• Makes parenting a celebration of the outdoors and a

SALMON IN THE TREESLIFE IN ALASKA’S

TONGASS RAIN FOREST

One of the first books of its kind to explore the

entire ecosystem—wildlife, habitat, and human

culture—of the Tongass National Forest

Salmon in the Trees tells the story of the Tongass, a 17-million

acre temperate rainforest spread along the coast and across

thousands of islands in the panhandle of Alaska. With some of the

highest densities of grizzly bears, black bears, and bald eagles in

the world, the Tongass National Forest is a place that time hasn’t

quite caught up to—yet. Can the great forest’s biological treasures

withstand the modern pressures of a globalized world?

For the past two years, wildlife photographer Amy Gulick has documented the grizzlies, wolves, eagles,

humpback whales, and wild salmon of the Tongass. Combined with essays from renowned conservationists,

scientists, and writers Richard Nelson, Brad Matsen, Dr. Carl Safi na, Ray Troll, Rosita Worl, Richard Carstensen,

John Schoen, Douglas Chadwick, and John Straley, Gulick’s images tell a hopeful story of a rare ecosystem

that still contains all of its original components—and where the local people continue to sustainably manage

its resources.

AMY GULICK is a photographer and journalist whose work has been featured in Sierra, Audubon, and

National Wildlife magazines, as well as in the conservation campaigns of the Alaska Wilderness League,

Alaska Rainforest Campaign, and Sierra Club. The North American Nature Photography Association

awarded her its Philip Hyde grant for her work in the Tongass. For more information, visit her website at

to the trailhead, and a complete route description, including pictures

from the route and a color map of the trail.

DEE MOLENAAR

MOUNTAINS DON’T CARE , BUT WE DOAN EARLY HISTORY OF MOUNTAIN RESCUE

IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST AND THE FOUNDING

OF THE MOUNTAIN RESCUE ASSOCIATION

The first published history of mountain rescue

and the Mountain Rescue Association

Dee Molenaar traces the formation and evolution of mountain rescue groups that carried out

legendary rescue and recovery missions throughout the Pacifi c Northwest over the past fi fty years.

In sharing these stories of triumph and tragedy, he remembers the volunteers who risked their lives

to save others in peril.

Beginning with an overview of the physical characteristics of the mountaineering environment,

Molenaar describes the specifi c geography of Mount Rainier and Mount Hood, where many rescues

and recoveries have taken place over the years. He chronicles harrowing circumstances, including

falls, avalanches, climbers getting lost, and a plane crash on the mountain.

Mountains Don’t Care, But We Do was written to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment

of the Mountain Rescue Association, founded at Mount Hood in 1959.
