Task: Filling in Richard’s character profile
Knowledge: to identify the features in a personal description
Skills: to locate specific information in the text by skimming and scanning
Read Richard’s blog below and help him fill in his character profile by following the FIVE
STEPS.
Richard Henare – About me
Welcome to my blog! My name is Richard and I’m 12 years
old. I come from New Zealand. My dad is a park ranger and
my mum is a teacher. I don’t have any brothers or sisters. I
don’t mind as I don’t have to wear their old clothes or
share my bedroom with anyone!
I have tanned skin because I spend a lot of time outdoors. I can’t stand hair in my
eyes, so I like it very short. My height is average because I’m neither tall nor short.
My mum always tells me that I’m too skinny but she also tells me that I’m
handsome. I don’t know if I should believe her because all parents say that about
their children!
9
I’m very energetic and love cycling, penny boarding or surfing at the beach. My
dad is very adventurous. He takes me to a lot of different places. He teaches me all
about the plants and animals that we see and about protecting nature. He also
takes me sailing and if we’re lucky we see whales jumping out of the water!
At home, we have a lovely cat called Aka,
which means ‘affectionate’ in the Maori
language. I make holes in big and small
cardboard boxes for her to play in and she
loves hiding in them. My favourite comic is
Calvin and Hobbes. Calvin is an only child like
me. He’s quite naughty but he’s also very
clever and funny. Sometimes I imagine Aka as
Hobbes and I bring her with me on my
adventures.

wears glasses. She is funny and friendly. My classmates and I all like her. I am sure she likes us
too. Every time we call her ‘Kellybaby’, her face goes all red. Kelly’s elder brother and sister
study at our school too, so they all go to school together every morning. Kelly’s brother has
long legs. He walks very quickly and his sisters have to run after him to catch up!
I sometimes visit Kelly and her family. It’s good to see them. To be exact, I visit their pet cat!
Every time it sees me, it purrs and licks my face. I like it very much!
It’s time for dinner. Hope to hear from you soon!
Best wishes,
Rita

a blog
Skill to analyse a writing question with PAT
to write an appealing (attractive) personal description with the use of adjectives and

Attitude to learn to embrace everyone’s differences
2) Situation
A Friendship Week is going to be held at school soon. You want to make a blog so that your
schoolmates can know more about you. To set up a blog, you first need to write a personal
description for yourself.
3) Difficult Points
Before you come to class, you should read this part to understand the possible challenges you may
face in the lesson.
Subject-verb agreement when using simple present tense
When writing a personal description, make sure you are aware of using simple present tense to talk
about the facts. Pay close attention to the subject-verb agreement:
I love keeping pets. My cat sleeps 20 hours a day. It loves to eat fish.
Giving enough examples for the ideas
Don’t be tempted to list all the adjectives you use in your writing without giving examples:
I am generous, energetic and outgoing.
Make sure you give enough examples for your ideas:
I am a generous person, so I always donate money to the poor. I am also energetic
and outgoing. At weekends, I play different sports like swimming and running.
The verb loves takes the -s
ending because there is a
third-person singular
subject It.
The verb love takes the
base form because there is
a first-person singular
subject I.
Giving examples helps
enrich your content!
43
4) Self-regulated learning
Task 1: Knowing the PAT: Purpose, Audience, and Tone
Skill: to analyse a writing question with PAT

Purpose The people who are going to read
your written product
Audience The way you write and the language
you use to present a certain attitude
Tone The reason for writing the text
Now, analyse the situation and find out the PAT of the writing task:
Writing task: A Friendship Week is going to be held at school soon. You want to make a blog so
that your schoolmates can know more about you. To set up a blog, you first need to write a
personal description for yourself
