SWA, theSocietyofWesternArtists, is the largestgroupoffineartpainterson the

WestCoast.SWAisanon-profit501c(3)anditspurposeistopromoteandencourage

theproduction, cultivation, exhibition, anddisseminationof fine art in the spirit of

the conservative tradition. Weoffer bi-monthly juried exhibits of ourmembership

includingourprestigiousAnnualExhibitionofArt, featuring thebestof thebest in

competitionforestablishedawards.SWAisrunentirelybyvolunteers.

SWA,aSignatureSociety,wasestablishedinChicagobyJosephineHancockLoganin

the late 1930's as the SOCIETY FOR SANITY IN ART. It was a protest to the

predominanceof"modernart"intheUnitedStates.OurSanFranciscoChapterwas

establishedin1938andheldthefirstAnnualExhibitionofArtin1939atthePalaceof

theLegionofHonor.ThisyearSWAiscelebrating79yearsoffineart.

Ourmembership consists of artists and patrons of the arts and is open to anyone

interestedinjoining.TheSanFranciscoChapterislocatedinSanBruno,CA.TheSan

JoaquinValleyChapterrepresentstheCentralValleyareasandis locatedinFresno.

Withourcombinedmembershipwehavemanyrenownedartistswhoarepainters,

sculptors,andteachers.

SWA offers free monthly artist lecture/painting demonstrations to promote the

educationofartandareopentothepublic.Inaddition,wealsoofferfee-basedart

educationworkshopstaughtbylocalandnationalartists.

GeraldBoydwasborninOhio,butmigratedtoOregonwithhisparentsattheendofWWII.HisfamilyeventuallymovedtoSouthernCaliforniainthelate1950’s.Aftergraduation from high school, he became an apprentice billboard painter in LosAngelesandspent7yearstherewhiletakingartclasseswithaprivateteacherandearningjourneymanstatusinhistrade.In1969,heandhiswifeandtwochildrenmovedtonorthernCaliforniaforayear’sstudy at a Bible College. He resumed painting billboards in 1970 and moved toFremontwheretheylivedforthenext30years.Allthewhile,hewasdoinghisownfineartandhejoinedSWAintheearly1970’sasheslowlybeganenteringartshowswithhiswork.Hehadbeenactiveinalocalartclub,butitwasn’tuntil1986thathedecided to get serious about building points toward his Signature with SWA. HeearnedSignaturestatusin1987andalso,thatsameyear,withthePastelSocietyoftheWestCoast. JerryservedforseveralyearsontheBoardofTrusteesforSWAuntilhemovedfrom Fremont to Galt in the Central Valley in 2002. One of our more consistentawardwinners,hehaswonBestofShowinboththe2006and2014AnnualShowsand has given portrait demonstrations in SWAmeetings numerous times over theyears. Since retiring in2003,hehasearned “DistinguishedPastellist” statuswiththePastelSocietyoftheWestCoast,andSignatureStatuswiththePastelSocietyofAmericainNYC.

ClaireSchroevenVerbiest isaBelgiannativewho lived in theCongoand inGermanybeforemovingtoSanJose,Californiawithherhusbandandtheirtwochildren.Anawardwinningartistanda signaturemember of several art societies, Verbiest is considered one of thefinestwatercolor andpastel artists in the SanFranciscoBayArea. She iswellknownforherlively,crispandtruthfuldepictionsofpeople,landscapes,flowersand objects and for her distinctive use of color. She conductswatercolor andpastel painting workshops and frequently serves as a juror for local andinternationalartshows.
