This month we welcomed Spring Connect students, transfer students, and 25 exchange students from Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. We are thrilled to have them all! After working hard all fall to prepare with Becky Cibulskis of the Global Training Initiative, Ambassadors led small group discussions around Kate Berardo's 5 Rs of culture. Our Mood Boosters series included presentations by campus partners and student representatives who spoke on nutritious snacks, gratitude and meditation. We also moved to the beats of a cardio class led by WellRec instructors. Additional discussions on Moodle gave students the chance to engage further on these topics, learning about global nutrition and diets. We finished the month with an Ambassador-led Coffee Talk on the benefits and challenges of being vegan or vegetarian on campus.

Chinese Lantern Festival in Cary is always a nice way to welcome them to

the Global Village. Seven students joined us for this cultural event!

The time has come to greet a new group of students for the spring 2019 semester! This month we welcomed Spring Connect students, transfer students, and 25 exchange students from Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. We are thrilled to have them all! Global Village HighlightsWelcome Dr. Rabinovich!

My name is Tatiana and I am a Postdoctoral Teaching Scholar in International Studies at NCSU. I am from Saint Petersburg, Russia where I studied International Relations. I came to the United States in 2009 on a Fulbright scholarship to study the Middle East at the University of Utah. In 2011 I began my PhD program in Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Arizona. My research interests focus on gender, migration, global Islam and Muslim minorities, and cultural politics in the modern Middle East and Russia. I speak multiple languages, including Russian and Arabic. I like traveling and learning about new places and people. I also enjoy reading fiction, exercising, and spending time with my 21-month-old daughter Vera. I am very excited about joining the NCSU community.

Student Profiles

Has there been any discussions you have found interesting or have changed your perspective on a certain topic? If so, what? The only one I could really remember was about fast food locations being found more commonly in lower income areas. As I thought about it, it was exactly like that, and that there are a lot located in these areas. I hadn’t thought about that before, so it was interesting.Do you like the questions being asked on the Moodle page?I am not super invested in the questions. I understand it’s a serious issue but do not care for them and would like more of a direct difference of cultures. If you could have a subject(s) be introduced to the forum, what would it be and why?I haven’t really participated much in the food security posts, so if I had to choose a different category, maybe something mainly to do with differing cultures. For example, what are things they do in their cultures? Some other residents were talking with me about how sports differed in their countries like handball in Denmark, a sport I have only played a few times. These differences are especially seen in American football versus everyone else and their own cultural activities. Something else that I would like to talk about would be cultural differences in holidays and cultural identities overall to discuss with the other residents.

Trevor Rose, Communication Committee Writer, caught up with Zach Kahler to get his viewpoint on using Moodle. How often, if any, do you post to the Moodle site, and contribute to the discussions held throughout the year?I didn’t really do it last semester or now, I forgot about it often. With everything else it was kind of put in the back of my mind.

Spring Connect Insights

Being a first year student is fun while slightly overwhelming. As a Spring Connect student, asking questions can feel weird because most people think I've been here awhile. But everyone is so friendly here and I love being part of the Global Village community. I'd encourage all newcomers to get out and meet people! It's so much better to go through your first year with friends!

Diversity

Our Diversity Documentary for January was the movie 13th, a film that critically examines US prisons and how they mirror systems put into place during slavery. It was eye-opening to say the least! Next month we'll be showing an episode of Hip-Hop Evolution.

From board games to movie nights, our In-House Activities committee has been busy this month! We look forward to the Super Bowl Party this weekend with Shubhesh and Alex serving as hosts! We'll be playing basketball in Carmichael on the 15th!

Ambassador Amanda and her crew can be counted on for selecting intriguing articles related to our monthly themes and posting thought-provoking questions! Be sure to join them in the discussion each week before 11:59pm on Sundays!

We LOVE celebrating birthdays and other holidays with all of our residents! No matter how far from home you may be, we want to celebrate you and your culture! Join us for our monthly Birthday Party on January 28. And stay tuned for updates on our Secret Valentine event!

As graduation gets closer for many, we want to help you be prepared for those professional opportunities! Our committee is working on two cool events to put you above the rest of the competition. Details will be revealed soon so be on the lookout!
