Welcome! In recent years, it has becoming increasingly clear that global economic growth can only be an accompani-ment to the emergence of a fairer, more open, more inclusive society. Technological breakthroughs in every field, social trends and citizen engagement, the rise of collaborative practices, local and global environmental considerations, the distribution of wealth... all of these challenges need to be faced at once. And at the heart of all these issues, port cities are doing more than anyone to innovate, transform and drive forward a whole new approach. In order to work together and devise «crossovers» that include all stakeholders - not just cities and ports, but also businesses and citizens, start-ups and universities, architects and logistics operators - you are invited to Rotterdam, one of the world’s most creative port cities!Join us in the centre of the innovation district in Europe’s largest port, and help us envision a new kind of port city - your port city. One focused on renewable energies and the circular economy. An imaginative port city, creating new solutions to enhance mobility both for individuals and freight. A pleasant place to live, in a constantly changing urban setting. A port city connected to its ci-tizens, and committed to ensuring they have the training and skills needed in today’s dynamic world!Representatives from port cities around the globe will be in Rotterdam from 5 to 7 October. Join us there to keep abreast of the latest pioneering strategies in a friendly atmosphere, and make your voice heard at the many debates that will be organised, alongside some of the world’s leading experts!Welcome to the heart of urban and port innovation. Welcome to Rotterdam!

Ass. Professor Murat MirataDepartment of Management and Engineering, Linköping University, Sweden

« Port cities have a unique and significant

potential for the development of more bio-based and circular economies. Systemic development approaches using industrial symbiosis strategies are effective in harvesting such potential and enabling meaningful progress. They need to be scaled up.»

Grace SaiCEO, Impact Hub Singapore

« Industry after industry is being digitalized and

disrupted with new innovative technologies and business

models. The speed of innovation and the talent that is needed seem different from a decade ago. How should port cities create innovation bottom-up, attract talent and learn from other innovation ecosystems?»

Professor Peter HallFraser University, Vancouver, Canada

« Waterfronts are seemingly places of

duality – land-water, work-leisure, industry-nature, global-local, even port-city. If we think about waterfronts this way, then planning will serve merely to further separate and divide. Let us instead imagine what it means to plan, across these divides, for waterfronts that are complex, beautiful and never complete.»

Ronan DantecFrench Senator, Local Government Climate Spokesman for the COP 21

« City ports face two essential challenges

in the area of climate change: adapting to its impacts, and the vision of a more responsible port. Maritime goods transport is now a major greenhouse gas-emitting industry. It’s therefore vital to find ways of attenuating its impact: better management of traffic, combining modes of transport, etc.»

Professor Henk VolberdaStrategic Management & Business Policy, Rotterdam School of Management (RSM), Netherlands

« The transition towards the next economy

raises many significant challenges for port cities, which can only be addressed by introducing new ways of organizing, managing, working and co-creating value on different levels. That is why social innovation is a highly relevant topic for all port-related stakeholders that requires further exploration.»

One delegate = 12 trees planted!Beyond regular exchanges between local actors, the port cities of the AIVP network also aspire to participate in active and concrete ways of protecting the world’s natu-ral resources and biodiversity. By joining « Pur Projet », port cities of the AIVP network can take part in a project which aims at protecting a remarkable natural zone while ensuring that the local population can continue with sustainable production in their « Criollo » cocoa plan-tations.Each participant in the 15th World Confe-rence Cities and Ports will contribute to the planting of 12 precious fruit-trees in plots of cocoa trees in a preserved region bordering the Patuca natural park in Honduras.
