Liturgy Schedule

Sign up to learn more about the Catholic Faith! Beginning Tuesday, September 15, at 7 pm, we’re going to start a journey through the basics of the Catholic faith. Every week, Father Steve and other staff members will teach us and answer questions about the faith we share. You can attend in person at the church or via Zoom if you prefer that option. Contact Cindy in the Parish office to get signed up for this great opportunity. We also encourage you to invite others who might be curious about what our church teaches - they may just be waiting for an invitation from you!

Family Faith Formation Mark your calendars! We will kick off our Faith Formation school year on Wednesday, September 23 at 6:15 pm. If you have a student in Kindergarten-Grade 12 who hasn’t attended our program in the past and you’d like to get them enrolled, please contact Cindy in the Parish office. For families who have been enrolled in the past, you should’ve received an email with the link to the online registration form. Our Faith Formation program meets the first and third Wednesday of each month. Remember, our Family Faith Formation program is not just for the kids, the parents will meet in the Social Hall while the students are in class so they can also grow in their faith. Child care is provided for preschoolers so all parents are able to join us. In the past we had started the night with dinner, but due to COVID restrictions we are unable to provide dinners at this time.

Welcome to St. Mary’s We’re happy you’re here! If you are new to our community and would like to be a registered member of our parish, please call or stop in to the Parish Office. We’d love to get to know you and welcome you into the parish!

Eucharistic Adoration

Eucharistic Adoration every Wednesday 9 am - 3 pm. All are invited to stop in to spend some time with the Lord in prayer. For those who can devote an hour, we have a sign-up sheet in the back of the church to assure that there is always someone present during the time of Exposition.

From the Desk of Father Steve: Learning from the Wisdom of the Saints

I think that it is safe to say that most, if not all of us, are feeling a bit of COVID-19 fatigue at this stage of the pandemic. I know that I am. While I am certainly aware of the need to be thoughtful, prudent and safe when spending time with others, especially those for whom this illness could be particularly dangerous, I am also growing weary with everything that this pandemic entails. And if I am growing weary, I can only imagine what many of you are feeling, who have to live in the “work-a-day” world. I think especially of two groups of people, whom we must keep in our regular prayers. First, our brothers and sisters who are residents of nursing homes and healthcare facilities, who are unable to visit normally with family and friends and who are very limited in their ability to go

out or carry on nor- mal activities. And second, I think of all of our healthcare professionals: doctors, nurses, aides, etc., who have to continue to work on a daily basis with the threat of COVID, who have to continually observe very strict proto-cols, and who risk their own health to care for us. If you are like me, you just want life to go back to normal! Unfortunately, we know that that is not possible, at least not yet, and so the question is: when I feel anxious, worn-out, overwhelmed, lacking peace, what do I do? To whom do I turn? Brothers and sisters, let us turn to Christ! Jesus is our example of patience in difficulty and suffering. Jesus is our promise of peace and hope. Jesus will never fail us, never desert us, never leave us. Jesus is with us; He is with you! And Jesus will give us the courage and strength that we need to both remain at peace inside and also to witness God’s love and peace to a world around us that desperately needs that message right now. Below is an excerpt from a treatise on Christian Perfection written by St. Gregory of Nyssa, a bishop and doctor of the Church who lived during the 4th Century.

God bless you! ~ Fr. Steve

*************************************************** He is our peace, for he has made both one. Since we think of Christ as our peace, we may call ourselves true Christians only if our lives express Christ by our own peace. As the Apostle says: He has put enmity to death. We must never allow it to be rekindled in us in any way but must declare that it is absolutely dead. Gloriously has God slain enmity, in order to save us; may we never risk the life of our souls by being resentful or by bearing grudges. We must not awaken that enmity or call it back to life by our wickedness, for it is better left dead. No, since we possess Christ who is peace, we must put an end to this enmity and live as we believe he lived. He broke down the separating wall, uniting what was divided, bringing about peace by reconciling in his single person those who disagreed. In the same way, we must be reconciled not only with those who attack us from outside, but also with those who stir up dissension within; flesh then will no longer be opposed to the spirit, nor the spirit to the flesh. Once we subject the wisdom of the flesh to God’s law, we shall be re-created as one single man at peace. Then, having become one instead of two, we shall have peace within ourselves. Now peace is defined as harmony among those who are divided. When, therefore, we end that civil war within our nature and cultivate peace within ourselves, we become peace. By this peace we demonstrate that the name of Christ, which we bear, is authentic and appropriate. When we consider that Christ is the true light, having nothing in common with deceit, we learn that our own life also must shine with the rays of that true light. Now these rays of the Sun of Justice are the virtues which pour out to enlighten us so that we may put away the works of darkness and walk honorably as in broad daylight. When we reject the deeds of darkness and do everything in the light of day, we become light and, as light should, we give light to others by our actions. If we truly think of Christ as our source of holiness, we shall refrain from anything wicked or impure in thought or act and thus show ourselves to be worthy bearers of his name. For the quality of holiness is shown not by what we say but by what we do in life.

Father Steve’s Schedule Father Steve is on vacation until Friday, August 28. If you are in need of a priest during this time due to a sacramental emergency (i.e. Last Rites), please contact Fr. Michael Lyons at (218) 830-1600.

Parish News:

Congratulations! Welcome, Cassandra Cavallin, who was baptized, confirmed, and received her first Holy Communion last week. May your faith continue to blossom and may you forever find support in the Church.

We also welcome Olivia Cavallin, daughter of Chase & Cassandra, who was baptized in Christ last week. We pray Olivia carries the light of Christ with her always.

Basics of Catholicism Wish you knew more about your faith and how to answer the tough questions people ask you? Maybe you’re not Catholic and are ready to learn what the Church teaches. Every Tuesday from 7:00—8:00 pm starting on Sept. 15th

Father Steve and other Holy Spirit and St. Mary’s staff members will be teaching and answering questions about the basics of the faith. Sessions offered in person at alternating locations and via Zoom. Registering is simple: call or email the office with your name, email address, and if you will be using Zoom or coming in person.

FULFILLED PART 2 – In the Old Testament, God began building a plan and laying a foundation for the beautiful traditions of the Catholic Faith. This study uncovers God’s consistent design for our worship of Him and His relationship with us. Learn how the Old Testament Tabernacle can be used as a blueprint for the Catholic Faith and how Jesus fulfilled it in the New Testament. Those who did not participate in Part 1 can still take part in this study. We will begin meeting on Sunday, September 27 (3:00 – 4:30 PM) in the social hall and will continue meeting every other week with the study concluding on Sunday, December 20. An option for participation from home will be offered. Sign up after Mass on September 5/6 or 12/13 or by contacting Cassi in the parish office.

Cassi’s Corner I’m really excited about the Basics of Catholicism class we’re offering this year in part because it’s what so many parishioners have asked for—to learn the faith and be able to answer when others question it. Additionally, the class is a perfect opportunity for those who aren’t Catholic, so I have a challenge for every one of you reading this: invite someone (a non-parishioner) to attend with you—a friend who has asked about why you live the way you do, a co-worker who is struggling with some aspect of life, the person who challenges your faith the most. Or how about you ask someone you love because faith is the greatest gift you can offer. Don’t let this be a challenge you read and dismiss! Don’t put it off, risking forgetting to follow through. Ask God who you should reach out to, then do it. You really have absolutely nothing to lose.
