The Life Course of LupusFrom Birth to Adulthood

with Lessons Learned from the Bench

Friday, November 30, 2018

A conference for pediatric and adult nephrologists andrheumatologists, nurses, fellows, residents, students andother health care professionals with an interest in systemiclupus erythematosus and lupus nephritis.

Description & Objectives

According to the NIH “Action Plan For Lupus Research”,systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is considered the “mostheterogeneous of the autoimmune diseases, and is one ofthe most difficult to understand and treat.”

SLE predominantly affects women of reproductive age,can affect most organ systems, and can cause a multitude ofcomplications, differing from patient to patient. The involve-ment of the kidneys (lupus nephritis, LN) significantly wors-ens the overall outcome of the patient with SLE. Progressionto end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is associated withincreased morbidity and mortality and significantly shorterlife span. In order for patients with ESRD from LN to be ableto receive a kidney transplant, their disease needs to be qui-escent to reduce the risk of recurrence of disease in the allo-graft, but the achievement of disease quiescence is difficultand the necessary duration of the time period is unknown.Expert faculty will present the most current research, issues, and practice recommendations to support clinicians in thecare of their SLE or LN patients.

By the conclusion of this program, attendees should be able to:

• Assess the current basic and translational research effortsand the role of biomarker discovery in SLE and LN

• Identify the kidney biopsy findings in LN as well as know their prognostic value

• Review the morbidities associated with maternal SLE in newborns

• Identify the pathophysiologic mechanisms involved in childhood SLE

• Analyze the clinical factors leading to disease progressionin LN and the risk of disease recurrence in kidneytransplant recipients

• Discuss the difference in treatment plans at diagnosis, during maintenance therapy and with quiescent disease inLN as well as be familiar with consensus treatment plans
