two contracts: undergrounding (including utilities and storm drains) and street improvements (sidewalks, paving, masonry walls, gateway feature, landscaping, street lights and paving). We expect to begin the undergrounding construction in fall 2005. If the underground work (which includes PG&E pulling electric cable and installing equipment in underground vaults) is completed by Spring 2006, we would be in a position to construct the street improvements in Summer 2006.

Relay For LifeAlmost everyone has been touched by the devastating disease - Cancer. Last year the employees of the City of San Pablo raised over $9,000 towards this undiscriminating disease at the annual Relay for Life Walk sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

Held at a local high school track field, participants alternate walking around the track for an hour at a time over the period of 24 hours - because Cancer never sleeps.

This year the event will be August 6-7 at Pinole Valley High School. Please stop by our offices and drop in some spare change, or you can leave a tax-deductable check written to the American Cancer Society.

Want to honor a loved one who either won or lost the fight to Cancer? Luminarias are available for a suggested donation of $5.For more information about Team San Pablo, call 510-215-3000. For more information about the American Cancer Society, call 800-ACS-2345 or visit them at www.cancer.org.

Have you ever been frustrated when you come to City Hall and can’t find a parking space? Or you don’t know where to park when you want to play BINGO or attend a special event? Well good news! San Pablo is getting a new parking lot!

The vacant property formally occupied by Davis Lumber will be converted into a municipal parking lot and is expected to open September 1, 2005. The Redevelopment Agency purchased the land in September of 2003 in anticipation of the Circle S Housing Project. While waiting for that project, the Agency will lease it to the City who will operate the new lot using funding from the City’s General Fund and offset by revenues received through parking fees.

The lot will be used for overflow parking for City Hall, daily use parking, special event parking and potentially carpoolers. Recently the site was used by St. Paul’s Church for Cinco de Mayo parking and worked wonderfully. You can park there on September 25 to attend the 5th Annual Latino Heritage Day. (See cover).

New City Parking LotSchoolPool will offer 20 free one way public bus tickets to students who would like to try public transit to and from their school beginning on August 15, 2005. SchoolPool promotes transit use for children in all public and private schools in Contra Costa helping reduce traffic congestion and safety issues around schools. Applications will be available by August 15, 2005.

Along with the free public bus tickets, parents and students will also receive bus schedules that highlight the public bus routes for each school served by a public bus system. In the past, these schedules have helped to keep parents informed about their transit options and encouraged them to have their children take the bus to school.

The SchoolPool program is brought to you by 511ContraCosta and is funded by the Contra Costa Transportation Authority and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s Transportation Fund for Clean Air. Brochures will be available at the San Pablo City offices located at 13831 San Pablo Avenue.

For more information call (510) 215-3035 or to download a copy of the SchoolPool application, go to: www.SchoolPool.org.

El Portal Gateway projectThe City of San Pablo and Contra Costa County initiated the El Portal Drive Gateway Project in May 2003. The Project began with a planning study covering El Portal Drive between highway I-80 and Church Lane, and developed conceptual designs through a collaborative process involving members of the community, with two public meetings held to obtain input.

The Gateway area was divided into sections, with the highest priority area being the section which parallels the freeway sound wall (from the freeway

I-80 off ramp and the westbound I-80 on ramp). The City of San Pablo is now working on detailed plans for this highest priority section.

The project will include utility under-grounding, construction of masonry walls to replace wood fences at the edge of the right of way on the westbound side of El Portal Drive, and construction of new concrete sidewalk, curb and gutter on the westbound side to improve pedestrian access.

The project will be constructed under

The City of San Pablo has more than 60 trash cans throughout the city on major streets and in the parks. However, littering continues to be a problem.

The Tile Art Project was started to make the trash cans more appealing in the hopes of encouraging residents to use them more often. Tiles with environmental messages were painted by local elementary school students and installed on the trash cans. The

new cans have a recycle top for your plastic and glass bottles, and aluminum cans. These trash cans are located on the corner of 23rd Street and Dover Street, so go by and take a look!

Participants in the tile art project included: • 6th grade classes from Downer Elementary School, 2004

• San Pablo Summer Program 2004• Mr. Prather’s 4th grade class at Downer Elementary School, 2005• Ms. Chamber’s 3rd grade class at Dover Elementary School, 2005.

Funding is being provided in part by the California Department of Conservation, Recycling Division.
