The World in A Grain of Sand: Ancient Maritime and Overland Trade

“The world in a grain of sand” is an exhibition that uses a small number of objects to communicate about the extensive maritime and overland trade routes of the past. Sand is an interesting metaphor for the land and sea trade which characterised the ancient Silk Road. The objects chosen for this exhibition highlight key themes around the circulation of commodities, people and ideas across the Silk Road over time. The artefacts on display include export ceramics from China and Southeast Asia, gemstones from Southeast and Central Asia, Mongolia and the Mediterranean, Turkish textile patterns from saddles, and ancient Roman glassware used in China.

In the Midst of the Storm: Hong Kong’s Early Typhoons

Throughout Hong Kong’s development from a small fishing village to its present state as a bustling metropolis, it experienced several tropical cyclones each year. In this part of the world, tropical cyclones are known as typhoons. This exhibition visually transports visitors into the past to learn about the catastrophic typhoons of 1874 and 1906. Historical images and artefacts will offer visitors a glimpse of these major maritime disasters and how Hong Kongers dealt with and lived in harmony with the natural world.

By showing the disastrous consequences of typhoons over a century ago, this exhibition aims to increase the public’s awareness of the impact typhoons had on Hong Kong and to pay tribute to the many heroes who safeguarded the lives of people in Hong Kong during these disasters. The exhibition was initiated by the Master Mariner Michael J. Jones who has spent many years researching Hong Kong’s typhoons, and is supported by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Elliot Gruber, CEO, Mariner’s Museum Newport News, Virginia, USA

Maritime museums need to do more than just tell maritime history if they are to thrive in an increasingly competitive environment. How to develop a blue print for the 21st century and beyond.

Elliot Gruber has spent his career growing and transforming American nonprofit institutions from national parks to Civil War including the development and opening of the Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center and The Mariners’ Museum and Park.

Building Blue Networks: Measuring and Conserving Marine Biodiversity

Dr. Shelby McIlroy, Coral Ecologist The Swire Institute of Marine Science School of Biological Sciences & Department of Earth Sciences

In its most basic form, biodiversity is “Life on Earth”. As the global population of humans increases, the diversity and distribution of marine organisms is changing, which in turn changes the way that ecosystems, such as coral reefs, function. The marine environment of Hong Kong has changed dramatically over the past century yet there remains a surprisingly high biodiversity within Hong Kong waters including more than 80 species of corals. Dr. McIlroy will discuss ongoing, locally-based research and evaluate how Hong Kong fits into a global picture of marine biodiversity. Information on past and current trends in biodiversity will provide a better understanding of marine systems and which management actions may have the most positive impact on preserving marine life on earth.

Re-visiting the Typhoon in 1906

Shun Chi-ming, Director Hong Kong Observatory

In September 1906, Hong Kong faced one of the deadliest typhoon disasters on record with fatalities of more than 10,000. While an investigation had been conducted on whether or not the typhoon could have been predicted by the Hong Kong Observatory to avoid the disaster, the scientific facts about the event have not been fully presented since then. There were rumours even today about the Observatory’s Director committing suicide due to his inability to provide an early warning. In this talk, Mr. Shun Chi-ming, the current Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, will re-visit important questions related to this historically important event: Could the typhoon be predicted given the technologies back in 1906? How the typhoon warning system has evolved since then? What technologies are available to provide early warning today?

* The talk will be given by Dr. TC Lee, Senior Scientific Officer of the Hong Kong Observatory if Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 1 or No. 3 is in force. The talk will automatically be cancelled if Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 8 or higher is in force.

Typhoons and Shipping

Petty Leung, Managing Director Applied Weather Technology (Hong Kong) Ltd

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word typhoon? Happy about suspension of classes or time off work? But for ships and their crews at sea, it could be their worst nightmare. In an area referred to as the Northwestern Pacific Basin there are more active cyclones than anywhere on earth and pose a serious threat to all ships plying their trade. So what can be done to mitigate the risks to seafarers? What actually is a typhoon? Why do we get so many in our part of the world? Join me and let’s explore one of the Mother Nature’s awesome powers.

This talk will discuss the emergence and transformation of the bathing beaches in Hong Kong and analyze the different symbolic meanings attached to them.

Typhoon: A Case on Hong Kong Politics and Economy

Dr. Choi Sze Hang, Henry, Lecturer History Department Hong Kong Shue Yan University

Since 1946 the Hong Kong Observatory has kept complete records of tropical cyclones (typhoons). Every year, typhoons affect the everyday lives of Hong Kong citizens. This talk uses visual images and textual materials to argue that a typhoon is more than a natural phenomenon that can only be observed by scientific instruments, and that a typhoon also provides a window through which we can observe the social and economic problems of Hong Kong. Typhoons have been an important trigger for ordinary people to voice their political views.

Reefs of Future Present: Hong Kong Corals from the Qing Dynasty to the Information

Dr. David Baker, Assistant Professor The Swire Institute of Marine Science School of Biological Sciences & Department of Earth Sciences

Were there proper coral reefs in the past? Consider that during the Qing Dynasty the industrial production of slaked lime was extensive throughout Hong Kong, yielding 40 tons per year from mining living bivalve and coral communities. Indeed, historical records and archaeological evidence describe a very different environment in the past; where apex predators, megafauna, and diverse reef invertebrates were common. Through archeological digs, we show that the diversity and abundance of corals and other invertebrates declined markedly over the last century, including the extirpation of several coral species. Through targeted propagation and transplantation we show that staghorn corals have high rates of growth and survivorship in areas where they were previously eliminated, giving hope to the future of these marginal reefs.

Each lecture, delivered by experts in the field, will explore a different facet of the culture and exchange depicted in the painting.
