Feast of the Assumption – Mary is the New Ark of the Covenant! It is a Dogma of the Catholic Church that Holy Mary upon completing her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into Heaven. Why does the Catholic Church honor the Blessed Mother’s glorious Assumption into Heaven on August 15th? Precisely because Mary is the dwelling

place of God in the flesh and therefore is incapable of dying! In the Book of Revelation, chapter 12, we hear “God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of His covenant could be seen in the temple.” If you were a 1st century Jew listening to this reading you would immediately think of the Ark of the Covenant, the elaborately decorated Gold Box that contained the 10 Commandments that Moses received from God brought down from Mount Sinai. The Ark for our Jewish sisters and brothers was the definitive connection between God and man, a powerful weapon against evil that the Israelite people would carry with them into battle…helping them to defeat their enemies. Sadly, through the many wars and destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. by the Roman Empire, the Ark was lost to time and history…severing the chosen people’s physical link to God.

Now, in this vision, the Ark of the Covenant is back in its proper place in the temple in the Kingdom of Heaven…but something is different…the Ark is no longer a gold box but is now associated with a woman, Mary – the mother of God. Revelation goes on to say that “a great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth.” The early Catholic Church saw Mary, the Mother of Jesus, as the new and definitive Ark…she carried within her, not just the 10 Commandments but rather the living God, Jesus Christ, in her womb. Notice, that the new Ark Mary is like the old Ark, associated with battling evil and wars. Here is a woman, the bearer of the divine presence, who is confronted by a great dragon, a sign and symbol of the evil and threat of violence in our world.

This dragon is powerless against the woman and her child. This little newborn baby and his mother are more powerful than all the world’s armies. Mary as the new Ark is still as effective in battle today as the old Ark was in ancient Israel. When you pray the Rosary, say a hail Mary, adore the Blessed Sacrament, and receive Holy Communion, you are honoring the power of Mary, as the new Ark, to defeat evil. You are honoring Mary, the Mother of God: God who drives out fear, cures sickness and overcomes the darkness of this world. In Mary, God dwells with humanity again, not just in a gold box, but in flesh, blood and bone, in the body of every Catholic believer, made possible through the Ark of the New Covenant. Never forget, the Lord is with us, always!

FATHER JAMIE’S HEALING HUMOR Mrs. Allen was having a tough time getting the catsup to flow from a bottle. While she pounded the bottle, the doorbell rang. “See who is there,” she shouted to Jimmy, who ran to open the door. There was Father Murphy, to see about some parish business. “Where’s your mom?” he asked. Brightly Jimmy replied: “She’s in the kitchen, hitting the bottle.” (from JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, VOL. 1, by Msgr. Arthur Tonne, 1983) We might be tempted to "hit the bottle" if we felt it to be true that Jesus played favorites and did not care about us or our problems. However, not only did the Lord of Life come for the "lost sheep of the house of Israel," he came to love, comfort, forgive, heal, and save us all. The entirety of humankind makes up the family of the God who is with us, the God who loves us.

ASK THE DEACONQ. In the Creed, why do we say, “begotten, not made” what’s the difference?

A. First I must point out that this has nothing to do with the fact that when Jesus was born on Earth He was born of a virgin. We’re now talking about something that happened before even nature itself was created, even before time began. Christ is begotten, not created. Simply put, to beget is to become the father of: create is to make. When you beget, you beget something of the same kind as yourself. A man begets human babies, a squirrel begets little squirrels and a bird begets eggs which hatch into little birds. But when you “make,” you make something of a different kind than yourself. A bird makes a nest and so does a squirrel, a man can make a great many things and if he’s talented enough, could even make a statue. A statue is much like a man but is not real; it only looks like a man. It can’t breathe or think because it’s not alive. What God begets is God, what man begets is man. What God creates is not God; just as what man makes is not man. That’s why when we say we’re children of God, His sons and daughters, we can’t mean that in the same sense that Christ is God’s Son. We may be like God in certain ways, but we’re not of the same kind. Everything God has created bears some likeness to Him and when it comes to man, the highest of the animals, we get the closest resemblance to God we know of. Man not only lives, but loves and reasons. In man, biological life reaches its highest known level.

WEEKLY SCRIPTURE PASSAGE As we pray together this psalm, let us celebrate God’s blessings and feel the light of His face shining upon us. “May God have pity on us and bless us; may He let His face shine upon us. So may your way be known upon earth; among all nations, your salvation.”

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRAYER

RITE OF CHRISTIANINITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the ordinary means by which adults who, after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, purposely and freely seek the living God by formally inquiring with the Catholic Church. Through dedicated instruction and spiritual accompaniment, and with the help of God, those inquiring embark upon a journey of growth and conversion so that, at the proper time, they may fruitfully receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist). Those who are not baptized, or have been baptized in another Christian tradition, and wish to explore full communion in the Catholic Church – as well as anyone who has stopped the active practice of the Catholic faith – is invited to contact Fr. Michael at (216) 524-1987 for information regarding the RCIA process. Spiritual accompaniment is available and formal instruction begins on September 14th. Please share this information with those who may benefit!

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL “Do you want Our Lord to give you many graces? Visit Him often. Do you want Him to give you few graces? Visit Him seldom. Visits to the Blessed Sacrament are powerful and an indispensable means of overcoming the attacks of the devil. Make frequent visits to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and the devil will be powerless against you.” St. John Bosco The Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, located in the Parish Center, is open daily between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. You DO NOT need an appointment; you will, however, need a face mask and are asked to respect social distancing guidelines. Anyone interested in spending a specific hour each week with Jesus, please call Scott or Amanda at (216) 310-6831.

TEXT MESSAGE AND EMAIL SCAM ALERT Last week, Fr. Suso was made aware of someone trying to impersonate him using a fake email account: Rev. Anthony Suso <[email protected]> This is not the real Father Suso. The fake solicitation is asking for gift cards for staff members. Do Not Respond to them. Father Suso would never send out an email request for money or gift cards. Never send gift card numbers through an email message. Thieves will use the numbers immediately to purchase products online. Fr. Suso was also made aware of several text messages from someone impersonating him using a fraudulent phone number: (216) 202-8343. This is a scam. They are asking for gift cards for someone who is sick. Do Not Respond to them. Father Suso would never send out a text message request for money or gift cards. Never send gift card numbers through a text message. Thieves will use the numbers immediately to purchase products online. If you receive anything from a suspicious looking account or phone number saying it is Father Suso, please check with the parish office first.

GOOD SAMARITAN ITEMS NEEDED Our Good Samaritan Ministry needs certain basic items to fill our pantry. The needed items are: canned meats, canned fruit, jellies, jello, pudding, coffee, tea, toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent and dish detergent. We are also in need of cash donations to purchase food certificates for our needy families. Food deliveries can be made at the door at the rear of the Rectory between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. As a parish, you have always been very generous in the past and we know we can count on your continued support! Please stay safe during this trying time and thank you for your support of our needy families!

RED CROSS NEWS! On June 15, the American Red Cross began testing all blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The antibody test is authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to the Coronavirus, regardless of whether they developed symptoms. The Red Cross hopes testing for COVID-19 antibodies will provide our valued donors insight into whether they may have been exposed to this Coronavirus. We recognize that individuals and public health organizations desire more information about COVID-19, and as an organization dedicated to helping others, the Red Cross is fortunate to be able to help during this pandemic.

THE GOSPEL OF LIFE – Part 2 Twenty-five years ago, Saint Pope John Paul ll sent the encyclical letter Evangelium Vitae, The Gospel of Life, to the church. We are going to begin including short sections from this letter in each Sunday bulletin. We know that you will find the words of this magnificent encyclical incredibly relevant to our current world. If you are interested in reading the entire letter, you can read it on the Vatican website.

NEW THREATS TO HUMAN LIFE 3. Every individual, precisely by reason of the mystery of the Word of God who was made flesh (cf. Jn 1:14), is entrusted to the maternal care of the Church. Therefore, every threat to human dignity and life must necessarily be felt in the Church's very heart; it cannot but affect her at the core of her faith in the Redemptive Incarnation of the Son of God, and engage her in her mission of proclaiming the Gospel of life in all the world and to every creature (cf. Mk 16:15).Today this proclamation is especially pressing because of the extraordinary increase and gravity of threats to the life of individuals and peoples, especially where life is weak and defenceless. In addition to the ancient scourges of poverty, hunger, endemic diseases, violence and war, new threats are emerging on an alarmingly vast scale. The Second Vatican Council, in a passage which retains all its relevance today, forcefully condemned a number of crimes and attacks against human life. Thirty years later, taking up the words of the Council and with the same forcefulness I repeat that condemnation in the name of the whole Church, certain that I am interpreting the genuine sentiment of every upright conscience: "Whatever is opposed to life itself, such as any type of murder, genocide, abortion, euthanasia, or wilful self-destruction, whatever violates the integrity of the human person, such as mutilation, torments inflicted on body or mind, attempts to coerce the will itself; whatever insults human dignity, such as subhuman living conditions, arbitrary imprisonment, deportation, slavery, prostitution, the selling of women and children; as well as disgraceful working conditions, where people are treated as mere instruments of gain rather than as free and responsible persons; all these things and others like them are infamies indeed. They poison human society, and they do more harm to those who practise them than to those who suffer from the injury. Moreover, they are a supreme dishonour to the Creator." 54. Unfortunately, this disturbing state of affairs, far from decreasing, is expanding: with the new prospects opened up by scientific and technological progress there arise new forms of attacks on the dignity of the human being. At the same time, a new cultural climate is developing and taking hold, which gives crimes against life a new and-if possible-even more sinister character, giving rise to further grave concern: broad sectors of public opinion justify certain crimes against life in the name of the rights of individual freedom, and on this basis they claim not only exemption from punishment but even authorization by the State, so that these things can be done with total freedom and indeed with the free assistance of health-care systems. All this is causing a profound change in the way in which life and relationships between people are considered. The fact that legislation in many countries, perhaps even departing from basic principles of their Constitutions, has determined not to punish these practices against life, and even to make them altogether legal, is both a disturbing symptom and a significant cause of grave moral decline. Choices once unanimously considered criminal and rejected by the common moral sense are gradually becoming socially acceptable. Even certain sectors of the medical profession, which by its calling is directed to the defence and care of human life, are increasingly willing to carry out these acts against the person. In this way, the very nature of the medical profession is distorted and contradicted, and the dignity of those who practise it is degraded. In such a cultural and legislative situation, the serious demographic, social and family problems which weigh upon many of the world's peoples and which require responsible and effective attention from national and international bodies, are left open to false and deceptive solutions, opposed to the truth and the good of persons and nations. The end result of this is tragic: not only is the fact of the destruction of so many human lives still to be born or in their final stage extremely grave and disturbing, but no less grave and disturbing is the fact that conscience itself, darkened as it were by such widespread conditioning, is finding it increasingly difficult to distinguish between good and evil in what concerns the basic value of human life.

CLEVELAND CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LIVE-STREAMED CONFERENCESATURDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2020

All women are invited to attend the Cleveland Catholic Women’s Live-Streamed Conference, a one-day event for adult women who wish to learn and pray as they growdeeper in their faith. The conference will be live-streamed on Saturday, October 17, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Inspired by St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the theme of this year’s conference is “Simply Holy: Living God’s Will in All Things.” Not being able to meet in a large group should not stop us from being together. CCWC 2020 is different from other virtual conferences being offered right now. We want you to set aside this day from normal tasks to allow this conference to change your life. We invite women to gather safely in small groups from their own living rooms or patios to participate in our live event, as if we were all together in the same place. The day will begin with a live-streamed Mass at Saints Cosmas & Damian in Twinsburg. Speakers throughout the day include Debbie Georgianni, co-host of EWTN Radio’s “Take 2 with Jerry and Debbie,” Mother Gabriella of Christ the Bridegroom Monastery, and veteran broadcaster and host of “Good Things Radio,” Brooke Taylor. Singer/songwriter Taylor Tripodi will share her musical gifts during our praise and worship time during live-streamed Adoration. Our conference is built to encourage discussions after each speaker as well as increase our depth of understanding and enjoy fellowship. If you are planning to experience the conference on your own, discussion times are an opportunity for prayer and journaling withguidance from our workbook. We hope this day will spark a spiritual journey in our hearts and homes that will burn long after the conference has finished. Registration for the conference opens August 17th and will be $25.00. To register, visit our website at www.clecatholicwomen.org. Each participant who registers before October 1st will receive a Conference Welcome Package in the mail that includes a beautiful workbook to use throughout the day and a few other special items. GOOD SAMARITAN BACK-TO-SCHOOL DRIVE

It’s that time of year...time for school. For many years, the people of St. Columbkille have been very generous to the Good Samaritan “Back to School Drive,” but this year, because of COVID-19, we won’t be collecting

back-to-school items. The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Cleveland is accepting cash donations only. This will allow them to make bulk purchases and provide “non-contact” supplies directly to the schools in need. The Good Samaritan Ministry of St. Columbkille has sent a donation to this school drive since we will not be packing bags of school supplies this year. If you would like to contribute to the efforts of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for 2020 back to school, you can donate on their website at www.svdpcle.org or you can mail a check to St. Vincent de Paul Society Back to School Drive, 1404 E. 9th Street – 3rd floor, Cleveland, OH 44114. (Do not send it to our parish.) Thanks for your concern for folks in need of a little assistance.
