Our Speaker for August

LOUIS DEL FAVERO

Louis del Favero began collecting orchids when he was 12 years old. He went to work in Miami at Orchid Jungle in 1968.

For years he collected orchids in the Caribbean, British Honduras (now Belize), and Central America with Fred Fuchs. In 1981 Louis and his wife moved to Tampa

where he opened his orchid business, Louis Del Favero Orchids Inc., 6601 Gant Rd in Tampa, FL 33625 (813) 961-8277. Louis specializes in unusual species and hard to find orchids.

He will speak to us on Collecting in the Bahamas in the Old Days of Wild Collecting.

Louis Del Favero received a V. Rothchildiana from a family friend for his 12th birthday. In 1968 he began working for Jungle Orchids after school, weekends and summers. They imported tree fern and orchids from Guatemala. A year later he established Louis Del Favero Orchids in Miami. It was also during this time that he took a collecting trip with Fred Fuchs to British Honduras (now Belize) and Honduras. After that trip, Louis was consumed by a desire to view orchids in their native habitat. This started 20 years of traveling to Mexico, Central, South America and the Caribbean.

In 1981 Louis moved to his current location in rural Tampa where he used his extensive contacts to continue importing specie orchids from their native countries.

He and his wife Bonnie have more than 13,000 s.f. of greenhouses open to the public of which approximately 50% are warm tolerant species, and the other half is comprised largely of Encyclias, Dendrobiums, Oncidiums, and compact to large flowered Cattleyas with an emphasis on fragrant orchids.

Louis will be bringing Orchid Plants with him to sell to our Members on August 3rd.

ORCHIDS WE SHOULD ALL GROW by ROY KRUEGER

Over the course of years that I have been growing orchids seriously, I have always considered the Cattleya alliance the “Real Orchid” family. Yes, I grow other genera, some well and some not so well. Cattleyas, however, have always been at the heart of my collection.

Sometimes it was species Catts that attracted my attention. Sometimes, bifoliates. Occasionally, splash petal and flares were what caught my eye. BLC TOSHIE AOKIE

One though that always caused me to look twice was BLC Toshie Aokie. Registered in 1960, Toshie is a complex Cattleya, a cross of many generations of cattleya hybrids. Sifting through the generations, one finds that over 60% of the plant is made up of C. dowiana. Hence the predominantly yellow color.

While have long admired the plant, it wasn't until several years ago at Redland's that I finally purchased one. It was the one pictured above, variety “Starburst” AM/AOS. It is one I like because of the richly colored sepals, darker red than many of the flared varieties.

Toshie also is found in a pure yellow variety with a dark red lip. All varieties sport the yellow “eyes”.

The plant has received some 24 awards from various orchid societies world wide.

It is an easy plant to grow, often blooming several times a year. Searching its history, I found evidence of blooms every month of the year.

All of the principal parents of BLC Toshie Aokie thrive on bright light and warm temperatures. Light ranges are from bright shade to dappled sunlight to intermediate sun. Temperature ranges are from warm to hot with relatively high humidity. Not surprisingly, the plant adapts well and thrives in our warm humid Florida climate.

It can be grown in a pot or a basket. Use an open medium to coarse mix. Water and fertilize year around because new growth and flowering seem to occur during all seasons. I use a 13-2-13 water soluble fertilizer with Cal-Mag as a base fertilizer and add a bit of bloom booster twice a year, once in spring and again in fall.

Toshie is not a particularly difficult plant to keep disease free. I do use some systemic fungicide on it. The biggest problem that I face is thrips. It can be thrip free until the bright yellow flowers open when it attracts the little pests from every corner of my yard. A preventative spray of liquid Orthene or Conserve sprayed just before the buds break sheath seems to keep the thrips under control.

The plant stays a relatively compact size for a large flowered Cattleya, not more than 15-18” tall. It is a uni foliate Catt, so can be split or repotted without too much caution or concern,

If you're looking for a Cattleya that will bloom regularly and give you something other than the usual pink, lavender, or white that is so common, try a variety or two of BLC Toshie Aokie.

Sarasota Orchid Society, Inc.

SOS meets on the first Monday of each month at Selby Gardens. The SOS, an affiliate of the American Orchid Society, is a non-profit association with the aims of promoting the development, improvement and preservation of orchids through the dissemination of information concerning the culture, hybridization or development of orchids, and generally to extend the knowledge of orchids.

Our membership dues, at $20. for individuals and $25. for families, are a great value. These dues help us acquire quality speakers for our monthly meetings and pay for special events such as picnics and repotting demonstrations. Our fund raisers, Orchid Auction, Orchid Show and Raffles raise additional funds to educate the general public about orchids and their conservation, provide scholarships to local students who will study horticulture, and support orchid research programs.

“Orchid View” our Orchid Society newsletter, is published monthly by the Sarasota Orchid Society. It is included via e-mail at no charge for members.

Deadline for articles, photos and information for the newsletter is the 15th of the previous month.

Contributors to “Orchid View” give reprint rights to their work to newsletters and other affiliates of the American Orchid Society.
