From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto ...

OCTOBER 29, 2017

My Dear Friends, Today’s Gospel, continuing the teaching of Jesus on love, fraternal correction and forgiveness, goes to the core of all Christian teaching, indeed of all directions to humankind of any race and creed. All our actions, all our lives must be the expression of the tripartite love: God, neighbor and self. The silly disputes among the scribes and rabbis of Jesus’ time, on which commandment was the greatest, betrayed a kind of selective and

legalistic approach to the Mosaic law. In Rabbinical writings, there were 613 commandments (248 precepts, 365 prohibitions) and fierce debates ensued between Rabbis as to the seriousness or importance of these commands; not very different from the disputes of Christians “casuistic” (moral Theologicians using logical “cases” more than Biblical pr inciples) in determining “mortal” or “venial” sins in the Baroque era of the Church. The answer of Jesus follows His preaching of putting forward “ideals” toward which all Christians must strive, even if it seems an impossible goal. For example, Jesus’ command: “Be perfect as my Father in heaven is perfect,” is obviously impossible to follow; nobody can be perfect like God! But what Jesus meant is that we Christians must do our best to fulfill the totality of His commands, “From the Bottom of our Hearts!” It is an Attitude of loving obedience, and not a mathematical and legalistic observance of a few chosen commands! Jesus said: “Not those who say ‘Lord, Lord’ are saved, but those who do the will of my Father!” So then Love is the center of our lives, because God is Love, and only those who love, live in God, and God in them! Let us put God number one in our lives, above all other things (people, money, power and possessions). Then we must love our neighbors, and today’s first readings show that such love must be practical and compassionate. When God created us, He put self-love inside our being, as a measure against which we may compare our love for our neighbors; sometimes either because of cowardice, mental illnesses, fears or misunderstandings, we enter into self-destructive relationships which do not fulfill Jesus’ idea of true love; be good to yourselves!

When we try our best to love one another, then we are truly fulfilling God’s commandments to be just like God who is the Eternal Love! And remember what the Bible says: “Love covers the multitude of sins!”

On Thanksgiving Day, November 23, Our Lady of Victory Council #3358 of the Knights of Columbus in Sarasota, will host their Annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner from 11 am to 3 pm for all the homeless, the lonely and anyone else who would like to enjoy a free, delicious wholesome meal in the company of others. Monetary donations can be sent to: Knights of Columbus, 4880 Fruitville Rd., Sarasota, FL 34232, Attn: Ken Nota. Turkeys can be delivered to the Council Hall on Sunday, November 19.

PSALTER WEEK II

That time of year of catching colds and the danger of the flu is here! Some of us already have suffered! On behalf of all parishioners, please avoid shaking hands and/or kissing at the sign of peace, and as you enter and leave the Church. I always encourage the Fist-Bump!

Wednesday is All Saints Day and this feast is a Holy Day of Obligation. First mentioned in the 4th c. the Eastern feast of All Martyrs (May 13) was attested to by St. Ephrem of Edessa (373), this feast came to be celebrated on other days as well in the west, e.g., Easter Friday, and the Sunday after Pentecost; the day of its observance in some places in the West. In 609 or 610, the Roman Pantheon was dedicated on May 13 under the title S. Maria ad Martyres. Many see in this the origin of All Saints Day. For reasons which are unclear, Pope Gregory IV (827-844) transferred the feast from May to November 1, adopting perhaps the English-Gallican practice dating from the first quarter of the 8th c.

The Liturgy of November 2 triduum of Masses will be celebrated for all the deceased whose names are on the Altar (the envelopes may be found on the tables of the church and in your envelope package). The Catholic Church is recommending that on this second day of November, and actually throughout the whole month, the faithful should pray for all departed relatives, friends and parishioners. The reason that we pray for them is the Dogma of Purgatory, which is the state of those souls who, although they have died in the Grace of God, still need to purify themselves, and are kept temporarily out of Paradise. Only our prayers (primarily Mass and Communions applied to these souls), alms and sacrifices can quicken their entrance into Heaven, as shown in the Bible (2 Macc 12:42-46):

“Turning to supplication, they prayed that the sinful deed might be fully blotted out. The noble Judas warned the soldiers to keep themselves free from sin, for they had seen with their own eyes what had happened because of the sin of those who had fallen. He then took up a collection among all his soldiers amounting to two thousand silver drachmas, which he sent to Jerusalem to provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In doing this, he acted in a very excellent and noble way, in as much as he had the resurrection of the dead in view. For if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rise in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Thus, he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin.”

The Church reaffirmed this doctrine in three Ecumenical Councils (Lyons in 1274, Florence in 1439 and Trent in 1565) as binding in faith, according to the ancient belief of the first Christians. To understand this purification, we must understand that through the Sacrament of Penance, we become reconciled with God, all our sins are forgiven, and Paradise is open to us. As you well know, the priest also gives some good actions or prayers as a penance, to repair the damage done to others by our sins. If such damage has not been repaired and satisfied by our own prayers, sacrifices and good actions here on earth, then in justice we must pay our debt in this purification period in

SAINT MARTIN DE PORRES NOVEMBER 3

Born in Lima, Peru, to a Spanish knight and a freed black slave from Panama, Martin and his sister were half-castes in a society where his meant loss of privilege.

He entered the Dominican friary and served as a barber, infirmarian, and farm-laborer and became known for his care of the sick and the poor. May we learn from him how to speak out for God in a society that has great difficulty dealing with race, poverty, and care the outcast.

Living with Christ

the afterlife. Let us then pray for the Poor souls in Purgatory, because once they reach Heaven with our help, they will intercede with God on our behalf. This explanation is a kind of over simplification, because Jesus is so crazily in love with us that, in His amazing mercy and love for us, He goes much beyond justice, merits or debts… God is Love, Fear Not!

Next Sunday we will collect for Caritas. There will be volunteers at the doors of the Church after Mass collecting for the poor and the needy in our area. This past month, we collected $4,709.31 at the doors of the church. I very often call this “Waiter/Waitress Sunday!” When someone asks me how much should I give, I often say: “The amount you tipped your waiter or waitress the last time you went to dinner in a restaurant.” Please be generous!

Daylight Savings time will end early morning on Sunday, November 5. If you come next week to Mass and you thought we may have pulled the rug out from under you, it is not our fault - you just forgot to put your clock back an hour at 2 a.m. Sunday!

REMEMBERING THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED

November 2 is the Feast of All Souls. Particularly on this day, but also throughout the month of November, the Church remembers the faithful departed. In keeping with the cherished tradition of remembrance of the souls of our faithfully departed family and friends, Mass will be offered for your loved ones throughout the month of November at the Diocese of Venice Catholic Center. Should you wish to participate in these remembrances, please email their names to [email protected]

As we conclude Respect Life Month, let us recall that to trust in God’s timing for our passing into eternity requires courage, humility, and sometimes great spiritual strength. This final stage of life, when we

focus our attention on the things that really count, can be a time of deep reflection, of forgiveness and reconciliation within the family, and of finding peace in one’s relationship with God.

LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR In today’s Gospel Reading from St. Matthew, a lawyer among the Pharisees again tries to entrap Jesus by asking Him the question, “Teacher, which commandment in

the law is the greatest.” Jesus’ response appears multiple times in Holy Scripture, as He says, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” The Lord then adds another that He cites as almost equally important, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Much has been written and conjectured about both of these, and often the focus is on who our neighbor is. However, there is another element of the second Great Commandment that is worthy of note, and that is loving the neighbor “as yourself.” Too often people conclude that this means that you have to love yourself first. Most of us grasp what it means to the love the Lord with all we are, although it is nearly unattainable to accomplish. However, that second Great Commandment does not mean that it is necessary for us to love ourselves before we can love anyone else. It means, quite simply, that most of us are concerned with our own interests and our own personal situations. Jesus is telling us that just as we often think of ourselves, we need to take care and have concern for the interests of others as well. In the familiar Prayer of St. Francis known to many Catholics, we sum up what this kind of love to which we are called really is, when we pray, “Lord, grant that I might not so much seek to be loved, as to love.”

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
