WAVELENGTHS League of Women Voters of Lincoln County, Oregon April 29, 2018 Presidents Message – May 2018 WOW!! What a turnout we had for our Candidates Forum on the 24 th ! The crowd was estimated at over 100 and was, by far, the largest we have gener- ated in recent memory. Thank you all for your hard work – those who were in- volved with the planning details, helped generate the publicity, brought refreshments, distributed and picked up the written question cards, helped with the set up and take down, and much more. Tues- day evening showcased the League of Women Voters at our finest! All the speakers were well prepared and interest- ing – they are to be commended for their willing- ness to step up and offer their services in the pub- lic arena. The questions generated by the audi- ence were thoughtful and covered a wide range of issues, making the presentations even more inter- esting. The May Primary presents the electorate with some important choices and I am very happy we were able to help by adding some additional voter education. This edition of our Maynewsletter is coming out a bit earlier than usual because of the need to get you the necessary information about our An- nual Luncheon on May 10 th . I look forward to seeing everyone at the Clearwater restaurant to en- joy the terrific view of the bay, excellent food and thoughtful conversation. It pleases me to let everyone know that we have a wonderful group of members who are committed to the future of the Lincoln County LWV and the will to come together in a leadership team! At our meeting we will review some needed bylaw ad- justments (and ask that you approve a motion to suspend the bylaws about submission of material at least one month prior to the annual meeting”.) President’s Message – May 2018

WOW!! What a turnout we had for our Candidate’s Forum on the 24th! The crowd was estimated at over 100 and was, by far, the largest we have gener-ated in recent memory. Thank you all for your hard work – those who were in-volved with the planning details, helped generate the publicity, brought refreshments, distributed and picked up the written question cards, helped with the set up and take down, and much more. Tues-day evening showcased the League of Women Voters at our finest!

All the speakers were well prepared and interest-ing – they are to be commended for their willing-ness to step up and offer their services in the pub-lic arena. The questions generated by the audi-ence were thoughtful and covered a wide range of issues, making the presentations even more inter-esting. The May Primary presents the electorate with some important choices and I am very happy we were able to help by adding some additional voter education.

This edition of our “May” newsletter is coming out a bit earlier than usual because of the need to get you the necessary information about our An-nual Luncheon on May 10th. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Clearwater restaurant to en-joy the terrific view of the bay, excellent food and thoughtful conversation.

It pleases me to let everyone know that we have a wonderful group of members who are committed to the future of the Lincoln County LWV and the will to come together in a leadership team! At our meeting we will review some needed bylaw ad-justments (and ask that you approve a motion to suspend the bylaws about submission of material “at least one month prior to the annual meeting”.)

I’m giving you some advanced warning of that request because we are currently researching ex-actly what we need to do “legally” in order to structure league leadership a bit differently next year.

As I have said before, I will be stepping down as League President. Instead of the present slate of officers, the board has been exploring the idea of an executive committee or leadership team. This would allow the chores to be divided among sev-eral people in whatever manner works best for them. We also hope that we can move our meet-ing locations around the county and find more ways to further expand our membership and pub-lic outreach.

These are exciting new ideas and I’d love to ex-pand our thinking even further. So please come to the luncheon ready to share your thoughts about programming, timing and locations of future meetings, and any other ideas you might have!!

See you on the 10th.

REV at Taft High School Georgia Roelof

On Thursday, April 5th (with the help of 4 Taft High School Seniors), Georgia Roelof made a presentation to Taft High School students about informed voting. Promoted on the acronym devel-oped by the March for Our Lives, REV (Register, Educate and Vote!), the students were shown how to access the Oregon Secretary of State’s website (sos.oregon.gov) to verify or change their voter Registration (ie. choose a party affiliation). About a dozen students took advantage of the opportuni-ty. The Educate portion will take place on May 3rd, when there will be a second presentation in the cafeteria, which will cover a look at the Primary Ballot, discussion of the ballot measures, “Think before You Ink”, and Vote Smart (an excellent non-partisan source of information about any poli-tician’s record, and current issues). Between April 25th (the first day ballots are mailed) and May 15th, we will do all we can to make sure the students understand how important it is to actually Vote! These students are OUR FUTURE!!

Maggie Leeds I was born and raised in Boise, Idaho, attended BYU and Boise State University, graduating with a degree in accounting. I married Richard Manzo in 1978 and during my marriage to Richard I worked for the State of Idaho, Department of Health and Welfare. Richard was diagnosed with cancer in 1988 and after surgery/chemotherapy his cancer went into remission. In 1989, we moved to Mexico and lived in the city of Tepic (inland from Puerto Vallarta) until Richard’s can-cer returned in 1990. We decided to return to Boise to continue chemotherapy and I returned to my position with the Department of Health and Welfare. Richard passed away in 1992 and I con-tinued my career in state government.

While working for the Department of Health and Welfare, I worked mainly in the Food Stamp, Medicaid, and block grant programs. I was a Pro-gram Manager for block grant programs (heating assistance, weatherization, and community ser-vices block grant). I was responsible for the budgeting, contracting, auditing of grant program contractors, writing and presenting program rules to the legislature, and ensuring state rules/regulations and budgets were in compliance with Federal mandates and guidelines.

Now a bit about how I moved to Depoe Bay. My parents retired in 1978 and moved to Depoe Bay in 1979. I visited them regularly and also become good friends with their neighbors Will and Fay Leeds. In 2006, I spent several weeks in Depoe Bay researching and setting up in-home care for my aging parents. During those weeks, I stayed with my good friend Will Leeds whose wife Fay had passed away from cancer the previous year. Before I returned to Boise, Will asked me to mar-ry him and, of course, I said “Yes”. I resigned my position in state government and we were married in June of 2006. That was the beginning of my Depoe Bay adventure. Will passed away in Sep-tember of 2017 and lived a wonderful 102 ½ years.

I have five siblings and many nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces.

I love living on the Oregon Coast and particularly enjoy the winter storms. I love to cross stitch, read, travel and walk. I am excited to be a part of the Lincoln County League of Women Voters.

Candidates’ Forum a Huge Success

Our April 24th Candidates’ Fo-rum was a notable success. We had invited all the candidates for contested county-wide offices on the May 15 Primary Ballot, and all accepted the League’s invita-tion. A larger-than-expected in-terested audience of about 100 people filled the meeting room.

We first heard Lincoln County Sheriff Curtis Landers speak about measure 21-186, the local option tax levy for countywide public safety services. Next Judge of the Circuit Court, 17th District, Position 2 Paulette Sanders and Lincoln County Dis-trict Attorney Michelle Branam, both running unopposed, explained the role of their offices.

The forum gave contesting candidates for the Lincoln County Commissioner position 1, Virginia Demaris, Doug Hunt, Kim Herring, and Betty Kamikawa, and position 3, Kaety Jacobson and Terry Thompson, the opportunity to appear together before potential voters. Likewise for the contesting candidates for Judge of the Circuit Court, 17th District, Position 3, Russell Baldwin and Thomas Branford. The Judge candidates ap-

peared together first, and then the County Commissioner can-didates. Each candidate was given three minutes to introduce her- or himself to the audience, and then moderator Jean Cowan asked written questions collect-ed from the audience. The fo-rum gave the voters the chance to see, hear, and compare the candidates.

The forum was taped for re-broadcast by Lincoln County’s public radio station, KYAQ, 91.7 FM. It is scheduled for re-broadcast on Monday, April 30, at 7 pm.
