Sudarsana Jayanti (Maha Sudarsana Homam) Monday, June 29, 2020Sudarshana, the holy discus (wheel) in the hands of Lord Narayana (Vishnu), is the embodiment of the power of Lord Vishnu in destroy-ing evil and protecting the righteous as he took the shape of the claws of Narasimha Avataram, arrows in Rama Avataram, axe in Parasur-ama Avataram, and Chakra (wheel) in Krishna Avataram. Hence the worship of Sudarshana as a devata (deity) is extolled in Vaishnava agama Sastras. Worship of Sudarshana bestows good knowledge and good faculties as the syllable “Su” stands for Good and “darshana” for Vision. SSVT will be conducting a grand Sudarshana homam followed by an abhishekam on Monday, June 29, to allow devotees to obtain the beneficial effects of the worship of Lord Sudarshana.9:00 am Suprabhatam, Dhaama Pradakshanam, Viswaksena

“Akshaya Vata” (The eternal banyan tree) provides a holistic platform for our community in providing the facility, resources including not limited to priestly services, guidance and materials needed to perform. We give great importance to our dharmic tradition, unique way of remembrance, thanksgiving and celebration of life. It is the least that we can do our forefathers and pay our obeisance to them. We provide these services through two

distinct facilities Paschima Gaya (Paścimā gayA – पि#चम गया) & Paschima Kashi (Paścimā

Kāśi – पि#चम काशी) for Pitru Karma & Apara Karma respectively.

This is an important and essential project for the temple and the community. Please join

sankalp (Working Group for Akshaya Vata). Your support, help, participation and

contribution will be greatly appreciated. To know more, avail the services, to join Sankalp and contribute to the activities of Akshaya Vata, please reach out to Venkat Angarai Subramanian @ 301.523.7238 and/or [email protected]

Karkidaka Vavu (20 Jul 2020) Karkidaka Vavu (Malayalam: കർ#ിടക വാ() or ‘Karkidaka Vavu Bali’ is the name for the rituals performed by the Hindus in the state of Kerala for their deceased ancestors. This day is also known as ‘Vavu Bali’ and is held in the month of ‘Karkidakam’ in the Malayalam calendar.

The ceremonies for deceased grandparents, parents, siblings, children and relatives are performed on ‘Karutavavu’ (new moon) in the month of Karkidaka. The ‘Shraddham’ rituals must be done on river banks or seashore. In Kerala, the ‘Shraddh’ rituals done for the soul of the dead is known as ‘Bali’ and the new moon day or ‘Amavasi’ is referred as ‘Vavu’, hence the name ‘Vavu Bali’.

The ‘Bali’ rite for the departed ancestors is also observed on the ‘Nakshatra’ or star the person died on. But it is believed that ‘Bali’ held on ‘Karutavavu’ (no moon day) in the month of ‘Karkidakam’ is more auspicious and souls of the dead are easily pacified on this day. Karkidaka Vavu Bali is analogous to performing ‘Mahalaya Shraddh Paksha’ or ‘Pitru Paksha Shraddh’ in other states of India.

On the auspicious day of Karkidaka Vavu, devotees in large numbers perform the ‘Bali Tharpanam’ ritual in order to pay homage to their departed ancestors. The rituals are held in several Holy rivers, temples and seashores across Kerala. The devotees get up early on this day and finish their morning routine to reach the ‘Bali Tharpanam’ centres. All the major temples like ‘Shangumugham Temple’, ‘Thiruvaloom Sree Parausurama Temple’ and ‘Varkala Papanasam Beach’ to name a few, remain crowded on this day and special arrangements are made by State authorities to ensure that the rituals are held peacefully.

The person performing the ‘Bali’ ritual also observes a fast on this day and is allowed to eat only one meal comprising of rice. The other members in the family can eat rice preparations thrice and eating non-vegetarian food is strictly prohibited on Karkidaka Vavu. In most of the households in Kerala, a special preparation of steamed rice known as ‘Vavu ada’ is prepared. Karkidaka Vavu is performed under the supervision of known priest or elderly person. Some of the important accompaniments needed to perform the ‘Bali’ ritual includes Darbha (grass), ellu (sesame seeds), pavithram (ring formed from grass), cooked rice, banana leaves and water.

Prayers for Health and WelfareIn light of the current health concerns across communities, Sri Siva Vishnu Temple (SSVT) Priests have provided Sri Vaid-hyanaatha Ashtaka and Sri Dhanvantari Mahaamantra video recording for Daily paaraayana by Devotees. Our Acharyas are also conducting daily parayana of the Sri Vaidhyanaatha Ashtakam and Sri Dhanvantari Mahaamantra for the healing and welfare of all human beings. We request Devotees to recite the stotras in their homes as much as possible. Mass recitations of these stotras are helpful in promoting the well-being of all humans. These stotras are recited in call and response style. This means that each word or a phrase of words are repeated twice so the Devotees can follow the stotras and chant them easily by listening to the first chant and reciting on the second chant.

A PDF is available with the meaning of the chants and can be downloaded for Devotees to print and recite: https://docs.google.com/…/2PACX-1vSNO_PrAN1XaG8ay2IGF_y…/pubA video recording can be found on our Facebook page - linked here: https://www.facebook.com/860164714084252/videos/506706346936366/

SSVT is compiling various community-based resources aimed to help devotees during this COVID-19 pandemic. Spirituality Resources Guide: https://ssvt.org/flyers/CommunitySpiritualResources.pdfHealth Resource Guide: https://ssvt.org/flyers/CommuntiyHealthResouces.pdf

SSVT has stood up a COVID-19 Advisory Group consisting of temple leadership, and a few doctors from the congregation. The group has provided the following resources to help devotees through this trying time. Please adhere to local, state, and federal authorities and exercise caution.

COVID-19 eTownhall with Community Doctors - held on May 3, 2020On May 3rd, SSVT held an eTownhall with Community Doctors to answer questions from devotees regarding COVID-19. A live stream of the event has been uploaded to YouTube and devotees can view the Q&A from the session at this link.

Precautions to avoid COVID-19If you suspect that you have made contact with any person with COVID-19, stay home for 14 days. Cover your cough and sneezes, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from other individuals. Always call your health care provider if you are concerned about your symptoms.

Sri Siva Vishnu Temple joins local Organi-zations to host “Grab & Go” Grocery Drive, in partnership with Prince George’s County Public SchoolsHeld on May 9, 2020, SSVT co-sponsored a local “Grab & Go” Grocery Drive at Eleanor Roosevelt High School

In partnership with Hindu American Community Services Inc (HACSI), Associa-tion of United Hindu and Jain Temples (UHJT), ANGARAI, Setty Family Foun-dation, Akula Family Foundation, and iWorks Foundation, SSVT participated in a Grocery Drive to support 600 families in the Greenbelt, Lanham, and College Park communities. Along with Prince George’s County Public Schools, we were able to provide families 12 to 15 pounds of food and groceries and support the community during this pandemic. Over 50 volunteers from the partner organiza-tions stepped up to assist with the logistics, and planning of filling and distribut-ing the 600 bags. A video of the event can be found here. SSVT will plan to host another similar drive in the near future to continue to sup-port the greater Prince Georges County community where our temple is located.
