STS. SIMON & JUDE CHURCH
HOLY WEEK SCHEDULE
DIOCESAN RECONCILIATION MONDAY In preparation for Easter and together with all the Churches of Brooklyn and Queens, you are invited to come and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) on Monday, March
26th. The priests of Sts. Simon & Jude will be available to
hear your Confessions in the Church from 4:00pm to 8:00pm.
Fr. Maduri will be here from 4pm-6pm and Fr. Sijo will be
here from 6pm-8pm in the Church. All are welcome!
“BE COURAGEOUS AND GO TO CONFESSION ” “The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a Sacrament of healing. When I
go to confession, it is in order to be healed, to heal my soul, to heal my
heart and to be healed of some wrongdoing. Forgiveness of our sins is
not something we can give ourselves. I can not say :I forgive my sins.
Forgiveness is asked for, is asked of another, and in Confession we ask
for forgiveness from Jesus. Forgiveness is not the fruit of our own
efforts but rather a gift, it is a gift of the Holy Spirit who fills us with
the wellspring of mercy and of grace that flows unceasingly from the
open heart of the Crucified and Risen Christ. It reminds us that we can
truly be at peace only if we allow ourselves to be reconciled, in the
Lord Jesus, with the Father and with the brethren. And we have all felt
this in our hearts, when we have gone to confession with a soul
weighed down and with a little sadness; and when we receive Jesus’
forgiveness we feel at peace, with that peace of soul which is so beauti-
ful, and which only Jesus can give, only Him.” + Pope Francis

HOSANNA! Today’s readings seems to go against each other. In the first reading we hear of Jesus’ triumphant
entrance into Jerusalem. All are happy and sing praise to Jesus as the King of Kings. Then we hear
the Gospel, which recounts the Passion of our Lord. It seems the crowds have to turn on him; they
now shout for his crucifixion. Although it seems strange, it makes perfect sense. Unfortunately,
Jesus had to endure death in order to save us all from sin. Although there is sadness in his death, we
know that our joy is everlasting.
DO YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE RIGHT?
Palm Sunday is a very special day in our faith. There are some families that celebrate it with a special meal. We celebrate that on this day
Jesus was received with enthusiasm as he entered Jerusalem. He was recognized as the Messiah. Unfortunately the joy soon changed to
betrayal by the end of the week as Jesus was crucified. Do we recognize Jesus as our Messiah and proclaim it joyfully?
STATIONS OF THE CROSS/SOUP SUPPER Join us on Tuesday at 6:30 for our annual Soup Supper. Our children have worked on projects which will be on display in church as we
pray the stations. Then come downstairs for delicious soup and see the presentation of art work showing the steps Jesus took on his way
to Calvary.
THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST On Good Friday at 11 AM in the Office of Faith Formation we will present the movie “The Passion of the Christ.” All are invited who
want to reflect on the sacrifice Jesus made for each one of us. Anyone under the age of 17 is required to bring signed permission from
their parent.
THE TRIDUUM Palm Sunday begins our Holy Week. The last three days of the week are very solemn. The Triduum (three days) begins on the evening of
Thursday with The Mass of the Lord’s Supper and ends at the Easter Vigil on Saturday evening. The Paschal Fast we observe on Good
Friday should be continued when possible through Holy Saturday.
WELCOME To all of our attendees at Mass today that don’t regularly come to Sunday Mass we would like to extend a welcome. Obviously there is
something tugging in your heart to bring you to Mass. Hopefully with the celebration of this special day it will prompt you to come to
Mass more regularly.

THE DAYS AFTER
Today we begin the most dramatic week in human his-
tory. It’s a week that shows forth the best and the worst
of the human condition: triumph and tragedy, celebra-
tion and mourning; loyalty and betrayal; humility and
pride, courage and fear. The triumph can be seen in to-
day’s commemoration of our Lord’s entrance into Jeru-
salem; the tragedy in His suffering and death just five
days later. The celebration is at fever pitch this first
Palm Sunday but mourning and wailing take over on
Good Friday. We see the loyalty of the women of Jeru-
salem who despite the presence of the Roman guards
make their own supportive presence known to Jesus.
Judas becomes synonymous with betrayal. We see hu-
mility in those who place palm branches before our Lord
and we see the malignant pride of the Pharisees. Cour-
age is found in the teenager John who stays by the foot
of the Cross while we see fear grip and overwhelm the
much older Peter (“I do not know the man”).
If we are honest with ourselves we can see how much
our lives mirror this scene. Our lives can seem like
roller coasters moving between celebration and sorrow.
There are times when we are loyal and times when we
have not been so good at it. We humble ourselves
through obedience to God and His Church yet pride
causes us to sin. We want to stand strong with Christ
yet fear can overwhelm in the face of uncertainty. Call
it the human condition, call it the effects of original sin,
call it what you like but it retains its singular truth. We
can be as conflicted as the people who made up that first
Holy Week.
This then brings us to the essential question, not only for
today, but for everyday. After we leave our churches
this Palm Sunday, who are we before God? Do we cele-
brate, truly celebrate, our Christian faith or do we carry
ourselves like people without hope? Are we loyal sons
and daughters of God and His Church or do we betray
them by our choices and ideologies? Do we seek to
walk in the way of the Lord which is one of humility or
do we have tendencies to that self sufficiency that is
pride? Are we courageous enough to stand for the
Truth, not my truth which is a contradiction in terms, but
THE truth who is Christ the Lord? Do we seek to tri-
umph over our sins and thereby death or do we suffer
the mournful sorrow of those who love their sins more
than God?
We can ask how so many people could joyfully and with
jubilation welcome the Lord one day and then yell
“crucify Him” just five days later. What happened? It
is a story as old as humanity itself. Those who love evil
can make a lot of noise, cause a great deal of havoc, per-
petrate much violence, and instill substantial fear in oth-
ers. Therefore the good stay silent. That sad reality has
played itself over and over again. Then there are the
betrayers who stand for little (the seed that fell on rocky
ground and took no root). If the crowd is going one
way today they are there with the best of them. If the
crowd moves another way tomorrow they move in that
direction. Being part of the crowd, being “in”, is most
important for people like this. It is not truth that counts
but self preservation, ego, the self. Then there are the
perpetually ignorant or confused, not because of stupid-
ity but because it is better to be confused and ignorant
and keep ones head in the stand than to know the truth
and have to take a stance that may cost something. Who
is this man Jesus? What has He taught? For these peo-
ple the only real answer is “who cares”.
Again the question must be asked: Who are we before
God as we leave this church today? The question must
be answered for our eternal salvation depends on our
response.
FR. JOHN MADURI
BLESSED ARE
Today we begin looking at Part Three (of Four) of the
Catechism of the Catholic Church: “Life in Christ”. In the first
part, we covered the Creed and what the Church professes to
believe in. In the second we looked at the liturgy, the seven
sacraments, and sacramentals. While these first focus on what
we believe, this section goes a step further and tells us how we
ought to live. Another title we can give this third part of the
Catechism is “Catholic Morality”.
Everything that the Church teaches about how man ought to
live is rooted in what she teaches about man’s nature. As hu-
man beings, we have dignity. We are “made in the image and
likeness” of God. All of us are made for happiness, and the
moral life is a sure path to happiness. Unfortunately, not many
people look at it that way. God desires for each of us to be
happy; to be free from the bondage of sin. We are made by
God, and with that we are also made for God. Anything short
of that will lead us dissatisfied and searching for something
deeper. On our journey through the Catechism so far we have
learned about who God is from what he has revealed to us. We
who have been baptized and received the other sacraments
have been united to him in an even deeper and more profound
way, becoming one with Christ and in so doing becoming sons
and daughters of the Father and temples of the Holy Spirit.
Our morality, the way we live our lives, springs forth from this
union and this faith that we have.
The primary “life manual” that Christ gives us is found in the
“sermon on the mount” in Matthew 5-7. Jesus probably gave
these teachings quite frequently to the thousands of people
who came to hear him. We hear of a similar teaching given in
the “sermon on the plain” in Luke’s Gospel. In Matthew’s
Gospel, the mountain is significant because he wrote his Gos-
pel to a mainly Jewish audience who immediately would have
associated Jesus’s teaching with Moses. Moses went up on the
mountain and came down with the Commandments and was
called “the lawgiver” by the Jewish people. Jesus is shown to
be “a New Moses”, a new lawgiver. Instead of the command-
ments, Jesus gives us a set of eight “Beatitudes”, or “blessed-
are” sayings. These beatitudes are so important to Christian
living, though we often overlook them. There are many of us
who have some or all of the 10 Commandments memorized,
but we often struggle to remember some of the beatitudes.
I don’t normally give “assigned reading” with these reflec-
tions, but I strongly encourage you to check out Matthew 5 at
some point today when you have a moment. (Put those smart-
phones to good use!) This is one of the richest passages in all
of Scripture. Jesus literally tells us within these eight state-
ments everything we need to know to live happy lives, yet on
the surface they seem to be filled with paradox. Are we poor in
spirit, unattached from worldly things? Do we mourn, espe-
cially for the state of the world today? Are we meek and hum-
ble? Do we hunger and thirst for justice? Have we shown
mercy to those who need it? (Not just forgiveness but living
out the spiritual and corporal works of mercy as well) Do we
strive for purity in our lives? Do we bring people together or
or tear them apart? Do we share our faith with others, even
when it is difficult? Are we falling in love with God? These
are the questions that a prayerful reading of Matthew 5 askes
of us. This is the conviction that we so often need to hear. For
“we all, like sheep, have gone astray” at one point or another
in our lives.
In the Old Law, we are told what not to do. “Thou shalt not…
(fill in the blank here).” In the new, Jesus takes things a step
further. In these beatitudes he is telling us what we ought to
do. And why should we do this? Well, for one thing we
should do it because he is our God and we should do it out of
love for him. But even deeper then that, we should do it for
the very reason that he tells us we should: because we will be
blessed. We will be happy. The great joy of the saints is a
testimony to this fact.
Pretty soon, we are going to start diving into some of the
Church’s teachings on morality. We will touch on things such
as abortion, same sex marriage, birth control, etc. and hope-
fully shed some light on why the Church teaches what she
does. As we go down this path, please know beyond a shadow
of a doubt that you are loved by God, and that everything he
reveal to us is for our own happiness. I’d like to close today’s
reflection with a quote by G.K. Chesterton, who reminds us
that religion isn’t about believing what we want, but rather
what is true. “I don’t need a church to tell me I’m wrong
where I already know I’m wrong; I need a church to tell me
I’m wrong where I think I’m right.” May all of us have open
hearts and open ears to listen.
